Well, this is just great.
I mean, how can this be happening right now?
Of all the luck in the world, apparently I have none of it right now.
We were slowly creeping to the storage room behind the bar. It is where our bottles and cans were kept but it also led to the cellar where the barrels were kept. This also had a hatch that led outside if we needed to make a run for it or it was had no windows so would be a good spot to magic away without detection.
The only problem was, the hatch leading down to the cellar was squeaky as hell. So, we needed mum to distract them in a distant room so that we could try to open it and hopefully remain undetected.
In honesty, with how my luck has been having lately, we will probably be caught.
I have faith that we will be fine.
At least you are optimistic.
Hunkering down low behind stacked crates of bottles, we listen as my mum unlocks the front door to see who it was.
"Chester. What an unpleasant surprise." What was I saying earlier about luck.
"Good evening, Helen. May I come in?"
"Do I have a choice?"
"Not really." There was a thump and mum made a slight noise. I had to clamp my hand over my mouth to stop the growl from escaping. Looking at dad, even he was ready to pounce.
Footsteps approached closer as people made their way into the main bar area. The five of us in hiding tried to squeeze as tight as we could against the wall - Maeve and Adelaide were trying to subtlely move boxes out of the way with their magic to create space to open the hatch; it had been covered thanks to Maeve's stacking skills.
Myself, dad and Jason were keeping watch, or more listening in, near the door so we could hear the conversation with in the neighbouring room. From what we could hear, it was just mum and Chester, but we know he did not come alone, so where were the others?
"Can I get you anything whilst you are here?" My mum's voice brings my attention back to the situation - she sounded so close, she must be behind the bar, which means she was only about a metre or two away from us, and she was the only thing blocking Chester from getting to us.
I did not like this. Not one bit.
"You can get your husband to contact me. Or tell me where your daughter is?" Chester said in such a sickeningly sweet tone that made me want to vomit.
"As if I would ever give you that." Mum stood defiantly against him.
"Not even to tell me where Edward is? I thought you hated him." He was goading my mum. Keep your cool, mum.
"We may be estranged, but even I still have a moral decency to know which side of the line to stand on." That sentence seemed to light a little twinkle in my dad's eye as his spine straightened.
Chester didn't seem so happy with that response. "That is disappointing to hear."
A few more footsteps enter the room - mum has a bit more company. One was already bad enough, now she had to face a mini horde of them.
We can't leave mum to deal with them by herself. I mindlink Jason.
I know, but we are all in a vulnerable position and we could be making it worse by intervening. He places a hand on my shoulder and gives me squeeze to help provide me with some solace.
"Search the pub." That made all of the hairs on the back of our necks stand to attention. Adelaide and Maeve had cleared the hatch, but they hadn't got it open yet.
"What gives you the right to do that!?" Mum shouted at them.
"You could be harbouring dangerous fugitives. We saw one flash of light when we arrived, so that is either the witches leaving or... they are still here." The footsteps starting moving around the property.
Our attention turns towards the sisters. We needed to get out of hear so that hatch was going to have to come open.
One nod from me and they slowly try to open the lock that held the latch shut whilst mum carried on with her protests, her voice getting louder so we were trying to time it with her words.
*Click*
Everyone freezes as we wait a beat to see if there is any response from the unwanted guests.
Doesn't appear to be anyone coming our way. Another nod to the sisters, and they slowly pull the hatch back.
*Creak*
The cringe on all of our faces as we waited again to see if anyone would come.
So far, so good. Adelaide beckons for us to follow as Maeve lowers herself onto the ladder.
*Snap*
Maeve's foot went through the first rung. Her hands slap the ground as she catches herself, only for horror to spread across all of our faces as silence falls in the next room.
The chuckles of laughter only confirm our fears. "Well, well, Helen. Looks like you might know where your family is after all."
And there was my hunch from earlier - I was definitely not a lucky person right now.
"Do you want to come out? Or, do I have to make you come out?" Chester raises his voice, clearly referring to us.
This was it - fight or flight.
If we fight, we would be facing an unknown number of hunters. And, would Dad join our side or would he stand on the sidelines? Or worse, would he take this opportunity to rejoin his former comrades.
If we decide to make a break for it, we would be leaving mum to deal with the Hunters. They could do anything to her and we would only have our thoughts to work out what nightmares they would be putting her through.
"No? Guess I will have to make you come out." Mum lets out a sharp gasp. Everything was urging me and dad to run into that room and snap his hand clean off. If it wasn't for the hand Jason had placed on my shoulder, I would have been in their within seconds.
"Sir, we have found someone." That made everyone halt again. Who had they found? As far as we knew, we were the only ones here that they were looking for.
A smell wafted passed my nose as more footsteps went into the bar area. Coriander? And a strong perfume? I questioned Jason.
Jason nodded before his eyes widened. Oh, by the Goddess, this could not get any worse.
What is it? Who have they got?
"Who is this she wolf?" Chester asks. She wolf? That is the question I wanted answering as well. Who was it?
"Allow me to introduce myself." That voice sent a cold shiver down my spine. Surely it cannot be who I think it is.
"My name is Willow, and I am an Omega at White Crescent." Yep, it was as I feared. What was she doing here?
Luck - well and truly out.
