Marching towards my office, I catch glimpses of people bowing their heads as they retreated out of my path. How much longer do you reckon they will be doing that for?
Reaching the office, I have a quick glance at two of the other doors in this corridor.
One of them was mine and Abby's bedroom - neither of us had been using it much as of late. What had we come to?
The other - Asher's room. His ashes had been placed in there by Clarke the other day... he might actually be the last person to have entered that room; I have not been inside since before the funeral.
One last sigh before I push open the door to face ny destiny. Opening up my computer, I begin a video call to the Council head office at the Houses of Parliament. I might not get the whole Council right now, but I could probably be informed by a few of them.
"Name and reason for call." The voice at the other end of the line spoke as they answered. They are always very blunt and to the point.
"Alpha Colton Harris of White Crescent, and I am here to return a missed call from earlier." My voice remained in the monotone state that seemed to be a regular feature as of late.
"One moment, Alpha. I will put you on hold and see if anyone is available." The cursed on hold music begins to play as I slump back in my chair. This was it - my fate is being decided. Would I remain an Alpha at the end of this call.
The minutes ticked by as the tortureous wait contined. It wasn't until I saw the screen flicker that I began to straighten my posture, only to see the Prime Minister on the other end of the call.
"Madame Prime Minister." I greet her, trying to add some warmth to my voice. Prime Minister Sue Grecan has always been a reasonable figure, in my opinion, just sometimes her, along with the rest of the Council delayed on acting on their decisions.
"Alpha Colt. It is a pleasure as always, though I wish we were meeting under better circumstances. Do I need to ask about the bruising?" She spoke with a serious expression on her face. This was not a good sign.
"Agreed and just had a bit of... insubordination." I will check in with Naomi later and apologise, but we all needed to get our acts together for the sake of the pack. Our Prime Minister did not need to know that me and my own Beta were going toe to toe against each other.
"For what it is worth, I am sorry for everything that happened the other night. Losing a child..." Her voice trailed as her thoughts drifted elsewhere. She wasn't just thinking about me here.
I decided to break her train of thoughts - sorry Prime Minister, but this call had a bit more riding on it than a trip down memory lane. "That it quite alright, Prime Minister. On behalf of myself and Abby, we thank you for your condolences."
"And how has Abby been... coping with everything as of late?" That was a loaded question, with a lot of different answers to it.
Yes, Abby was ths new Luna of our pack but hadn't done much, if not any, of the tasks thst you need to undertake for the role due to everything that was going on.
Yes, Abby was still grieving over losing our son to a traiterous member of the pack.
Yes, she was adjusting to her new life of being a werewolf, but her and Artemis seemed to be getting along nicely.
Oh, and did we mention that she was chasing down her former best friend with her Hunter father?
Where to begin.
"She is trying to embrace her new lifestyle, both as Luna of the pack... and as a wolf." The Prime Minister looked impressed that it didn't take her too long to drag that out of me.
"You know the rules, Colt." Was her response. She didn't need me to recount my side of the story, for it had been recounted many times by other members of the pack to the Elders, who were also present.
"I do."
"Do you have anything you want to add to what I have already been informed?" Her pen hovers over the report that she had laid on the desk in front of her; from the looks of it, it was quite a hefty report.
"I did it for the love of my mate, and I would do it again in a heartbeat." I said as what was probably my last act as Alpha.
I look to the skies - Forgive me, Mother and Father. I have failed to be the Alpha you wanted me to be.
My eyes cast over the screen. Prime Minister Grecan rests her heavy head in her hands as she plays with her pen, staring over the report. "I have a lot of accounts here of an illegal conversion."
This was it. Goodbye Alpha rank. Guess I should have been preparing Naomi to take over.
"However." My ears prickled at this interjection. "I have a lot of accounts of people willing to testify in your favour; appealing that it was a difficult series of events."
"So... what do you need me to do?" Was I still the Alpha or not?
"You will be placed under house arrest until your trial, which will be the last Saturday in January." She looks up from her papers and directly at me. "That should give you enough time to make sure all your affairs are in order."
"Thank you for your leniency." I bow my head to her. Knew she was reasonable.
"In the meantime, Colt. You are not permitted to leave the packhouse at Newstead Abbey. I will have the Elders or some of the other Council members do random visits to make sure you are sticking to this."
"I will not leave the packhouse. I swear on my honour." Though, that will make it harder to go after Abby. What if she is in danger whilst I am under house arrest?
Who am I kidding, I would still go after her. Just pray that this doesn't get added to my punishment.
"Good. Then, if you have nothing else you want to mention, this meeting is adjourned." She folds up the report and adds it to a pile of paperwork; the tray they sat in read 'Court cases'.
"Nothing to add. You take care of yourself, Madame PM."
"Likewise, Colt." And the line went dead.
Running my hands over my head, I rest back in my chair. I was still the Alpha, but I was by no means out of the woods.
This... was going to be a long road ahead of me.
My gaze turns to look out of the window at the Moon, wondering if Abby was looking at it to.
Please be safe, my love.
