Chapter 2 - The Richardsons

242 Words
Ethan's days blended together as he settled into his new routine at the Richardsons' diner. Mr. Richardson, a rugged, no-nonsense man with a heart of gold, took Ethan under his wing. His guidance and mentorship filled the void left by Ethan's absent father. Mrs. Richardson's warmth and kindness enveloped Ethan, making him feel part of the family. She fussed over him, ensuring he ate well and slept soundly. Ethan found solace in her maternal affection. James, their son, became Ethan's confidant. They bonded over late-night conversations, sharing secrets and dreams. James introduced Ethan to the town's hidden corners, and they explored together. As Ethan grew closer to the Richardsons, he began to uncover their complex web of connections. Mr. Richardson's "business dealings" hinted at organized crime ties. Ethan's instincts warned him to tread carefully. One evening, as Ethan closed up the diner, Mr. Richardson called him into his office. "Ethan, I know you're running from something. You're safe here. We'll protect you." Ethan hesitated, unsure how much to reveal. Mr. Richardson's genuine concern put him at ease. "Thank you, sir," Ethan said, his voice barely above a whisper. Mr. Richardson's expression softened. "Call me Dad. You're family now." Ethan's heart swelled with gratitude. As the days passed, Ethan became entwined in the Richardsons' lives. He helped James with his schoolwork, and Mrs. Richardson taught him her famous lasagna recipe. But the shadows of Ethan's past lingered, threatening to disrupt his newfound peace.
