The sound of keys jingling outside the door made my heart skip. I sat up on the bed, trying to ignore the stiffness in my muscles from being tied down for so long. The door creaked open, and in walked a woman. She wasn’t wearing a uniform, but she had this air about her—like she was in charge. Her movements were calm and controlled, and she wasn’t smiling, just looking at me with a quiet, intense stare.
“You’re awake,” she said, her voice cold, almost too calm.
I raised an eyebrow. “Is this where you tell me I’m stuck here?”
Her lips twitched for a second like she almost smiled, but it didn’t last. “You’re not stuck,” she said simply. “You’re staying, whether you like it or not.” She stepped into the room, looking around, her eyes scanning everything with no real emotion.
I tugged against the ropes again. “You won’t keep me tied up like this forever, you know. I’ll find a way out.”
She didn’t flinch. Instead, she put down a tray on the table beside me. There was a glass of water, some food, and something that looked like a small pill. “You might. But that’s not my concern. My job is to make sure you’re... comfortable.”
I stared at her, confused. “Comfortable? By tying me up?”
She glanced down at the ropes but didn’t respond. “It’s just temporary. Don’t make things harder than they need to be.”
I could feel my frustration building. I didn’t want to accept this. “I don’t want your water. Or your food. I just want to go.”
Her expression didn’t change. “You will, eventually. But for now, just drink it. You’ll feel better.”
I hesitated, still not trusting her, but my throat was so dry it hurt. I reached for the glass and drank, the cool water soothing my parched mouth. But the moment I put the glass down, I felt more aware of the strange tension in the room.
“So, what’s your name?” I asked, trying to keep the conversation going, hoping for some kind of answer that made sense.
“Elena,” she replied, her eyes narrowing slightly. “You should rest. It’ll be easier for you if you do.”
I shook my head. “I’m not going to just sit here and wait for you to—what, make my life easier? This isn’t about comfort. This is about control.”
She didn’t argue with me, just watched me for a moment before sighing. “You don’t understand, do you? This is bigger than you. And bigger than me.”
I frowned. “Bigger than you? What are you talking about?”
But before she could answer, there was a loud noise outside the door—footsteps, quick and heavy. My pulse raced. Elena’s face shifted, just a bit, as she glanced at the door, then back at me.
She stepped closer, her voice now low, like she was sharing a secret. “Damien isn’t the only one you need to worry about.”
I blinked at her. “What does that mean?”
Her eyes flicked toward the door again, and I could tell she was debating something. Then she straightened up, her usual calm returning. “Just rest. We’ll talk later.”
She turned and walked to the door, her steps echoing in the quiet room. But just before she closed it behind her, I heard her murmur, “You’re not the only one he’s watching.”
The door shut, leaving me alone with my thoughts. My heart hammered in my chest, and I couldn’t shake the feeling that something bigger was going on. Something that had nothing to do with me just being trapped in this room.
Was there more to Damien’s plan? And what did Elena mean by "watching"? Was there someone else involved?
I couldn’t just sit here and wait.
I had to figure out what was going on before it was too late.
Just as I was about to pull my thoughts together, the door swung open again.
This time, I wasn’t alone.
Damien stepped inside.
His cold, calculating eyes locked on mine. I could feel my breath catch in my throat.
He didn’t say anything at first. He just stared at me, as though measuring my every move, weighing my thoughts, knowing exactly what I was thinking.
His presence felt suffocating like the room had gotten smaller. I couldn’t look away.
“What’s going on?” I managed to ask, my voice shaky.
He raised an eyebrow, his lips curling into a smile that didn’t reach his eyes. “You’re asking the wrong questions.”
The door clicked shut behind him.
And suddenly, I realized… I had no idea what was coming next.
