~~~ASTRID~~~
I stood frozen outside the door of my matrimonial bedroom. My heart pounded in my chest as the muffled sounds reached my ears. I didn’t need to open the door to know what was happening on the other side of the red door.
The soft moans, the whispered words. They all created a vivid gut wrenching image in my head. Wasn’t she pregnant? My hands trembled, fighting to regain control over the food tray in my hand. I had tried to push the doubts away. To believe Karl wouldn’t fall for her act.
But here it was, thrown right back at me—shattering every last piece of hope I had to regain Karl’s heart. Not long after my accident on the day of my escape, I found my destined mate. Karl Hailstone, Alpha of Gray sky pack.
Across the borders of his pack, he was known as the iron fist alpha. I didn’t let the rumors of his darkness or ruthlessness get to me. Instead, I found ways to love him, to cherish him.
Along the line, it all seemed like it was working, like Karl was beginning to love me back. He stopped being too demanding for s*x, always sought my consent and allowed me to give him advice in certain areas concerning his rule.
He knew nothing about me, asides the fact that I was given refuge in his pack and served as a servant before we experienced the glaze. Rumors of the return of his first lover started flying across the pack.
He did say he wasn’t getting back with her even if it were true that she was back. He sounded so sure. But the moment Freya Snow walked through those large doors, bearing news of her pregnancy for him, I doubted the words of the man I loved.
Tears trickled down my eyes, my legs retracing from the door. I turned around to leave but bumped into the chief maid. A stern- looking oldie.
“Were you sent to serve the Alpha or to shed tears at his door?” She threw a question at me. My mind was barely present. I lowered my head, trying to hold back my tears. But they betrayed my efforts.
“I…I,” I stuttered.
She dragged me back to the door and pulled my scarf closer to her. “Go in there and serve the Alpha and his mate! Or did you think you would have a chance as a second chance mate?” She asked with a chuckle. “You outcast,” she cursed.
She helped me knock and the door was flung open after she left. It was Freya, with her pretentious smile of pity and love.
“Oh…Astrid,” Freya called. She reached to take the tray from my hand but I hesitated. I could hear the shower running from where I stood. That was Karl. I sucked in my tears and took further steps closer to her.
“Why are you here, Freya? You don’t just go away and reappear from nowhere claiming to be carrying my mates child,” I fired with a low voice. An evil smile crawled up Freya’s face and disappeared immediately the door of the bathroom opened.
“You may leave,” Freya took the tray from my hand and returned to the room. Karl and I shared glances for a second. His expression was stoic, and I just wished I would see some type of regret in his face. But there was nothing. Instead, they kissed before me.
It felt like a saw driving through my heart. With a heavy swallow, I left the room, coming to a conclusion in my mind. If Karl had refused to acknowledge my love for him, then I am probably not needed anywhere around him again. I am done fighting for love.
My hands trembled as I placed the divorce paper on the table. The sound of the paper and my finger hitting the table echoed across the room, amplifying the heat of the moment. Karl was forced to dismiss the wolves he was addressing.
He leaned back on his chair, his gaze shifting to me.
“What is this?” He asked.
“We should end things now, Karl,” I said. Though my heart was racing, I did my best to keep my voice steady and void of fear. I had rehearsed this countless times in my head. But standing here now, with Karl’s piercing blue eyes locked on me, every word disappeared from my memory.
Karl didn’t look surprised. Perhaps he had seen this coming the moment he let Freya into these walls. He reached for the paper, his eyes scanning the writing. A small smile crawled up his face. Was he finding it exciting?
“This isn’t amusing in any way, Alpha karl,” I swallowed hard, hoping my one minute burrowed confidence would do the trick. “You’ve made me a standby for way to long. You’ve never valued my love for you. You’ve hurt me in more ways than I can explain. So let’s end it. Let’s get a divorce,”
I held myself from breaking down as I spoke from my heart. Karl flipped the paper, his smile still on. He didn’t argue. He didn’t fight my decision or protest like I expected him to. I hoped to see him protest my decision just to reignite the final spark of hope in me.
He reached for the pen on his desk, and just when I thought he was going to sign it, he dropped it. My lungs fought to let my breath out. They tightened as he stood up, inching closer to me. I kept taking steps back until I got to the wall.
“Did you mention a divorce, Astrid?” He whispered, his breath fanning against my skin. “You do understand this is something you can’t go back from, don’t you?” He asked.
“I know,” I breathed, doing my best to avoid his eyes. I know they are charming, but I refuse myself to be lured away from my purpose. “If you don’t love me, Karl…just sign the papers,” I added. My hands were trembling already.
“Have you forgotten? You have no where to go. No one to return to. Where would you run to? No one will accept a wolf less omega, Astrid,”
“Sign the papers if you don’t love me, Karl,” I interrupted him, my emotions getting the best of me. The tears I had held in since I walked into his office trickled down my cheek while he watched. He pulled away from me, returned to desk and picked the paper.
I watched in horror as he signed the paper, my heart taking a leap out of my chest. He flung it to me before taking his seat.
He actually did sign it. He signed it. I couldn’t bring myself to believing it.
“It’s just a matter of hours, then you’ll come crawling back to me,” Karl said from his table. My stomach twisted at his words, the audacity of his confidence igniting a fire in my chest.
“I’m not coming back this time,” I said with a firm voice, meeting his gaze with a steel I didn’t know I possessed. “Freya carries your heir and has taken my place. Happy married life, Alpha Karl”.
