Kael was going to kiss me.
I knew it.
The realization hit so hard my entire body went tense beneath the rain.
His face hovered inches from mine, silver eyes locked onto my mouth with a level of focus that made heat spread low through my stomach.
Everything about him felt overwhelming this close.
The heat coming off his body.
The sharp scent of rain, smoke, and something dangerously masculine.
The way his chest rose unevenly like he was struggling to breathe normally around me.
And God—
The way he looked at me.
Not casual attraction.
Not flirtation.
Hunger.
Pure, consuming hunger.
“Kael,” I whispered.
His jaw tightened instantly at the sound of his name on my lips.
Like hearing me say it affected him physically.
Slowly, painfully slowly, his hand slid from my cheek to the side of my neck.
My pulse jumped violently beneath his touch.
His eyes darkened.
“You should be afraid of me,” he said quietly.
I swallowed hard.
“Maybe I am.”
A dangerous look crossed his face.
“No,” he murmured. “You’re curious.”
Unfortunately…
He was right.
Because instead of pulling away, I was standing there letting this terrifying man touch me in the middle of the woods while wolves literally watched from the shadows.
I had officially lost my mind.
Kael leaned closer.
My breath caught instantly.
One more inch.
That was all it would take.
Then suddenly—
A female voice cut sharply through the clearing.
“Kael.”
The effect was immediate.
Kael’s entire body stiffened.
I blinked rapidly as another girl stepped into the clearing from between the trees.
Tall.
Beautiful.
Perfect dark hair falling over one shoulder.
And the second her eyes landed on me—
Hatred.
Instant and sharp.
Well.
That couldn’t be good.
Her gaze flicked down to Kael’s hand on my neck.
Then back to my face.
“You brought a human here?” she asked coldly.
Human.
Interesting choice of words.
Kael slowly lowered his hand from my skin.
The loss of contact felt strangely disappointing.
Which was deeply concerning.
“She shouldn’t be near the north woods,” the girl continued.
“She was leaving,” Kael said flatly.
Ronan snorted from behind us.
“Sure she was.”
The girl ignored him completely.
But her eyes stayed fixed on me with open dislike now.
Then she noticed something.
Her expression changed instantly.
Shock.
“No,” she whispered.
My stomach tightened.
No what?
The girl stepped closer carefully, eyes narrowing slightly like she was trying to understand something impossible.
Then suddenly—
She grabbed my wrist.
Pain exploded through my arm.
I gasped sharply.
The girl inhaled hard.
And Kael lost control.
One second she was touching me.
The next—
Kael had her slammed violently against a tree.
The entire forest seemed to shake with the force of it.
My breath caught.
Holy s**t.
Kael’s hand wrapped around her throat while silver burned brightly in his eyes.
“Touch her again,” he said softly, “and I’ll break your arm.”
The girl looked stunned.
Not frightened.
Stunned.
Like she had never seen him react this way before.
Ronan looked absolutely thrilled by the chaos.
“This is getting entertaining.”
“Kael,” I said carefully.
He didn’t move.
Every muscle in his body looked dangerously tight.
The girl’s eyes shifted toward me slowly.
And somehow…
Her expression became even worse.
Not jealousy.
Recognition.
Fear.
“What is she?” she whispered.
Kael’s jaw flexed violently.
“She’s none of your concern.”
The girl looked back at him in disbelief.
“She smells like—”
“Enough.”
The growl in his voice cut her off instantly.
Silence settled over the clearing again.
Heavy.
Dangerous.
Then slowly, Kael released her.
The girl stumbled slightly before straightening immediately.
Her eyes never left me.
“She’ll destroy you,” she said quietly to Kael.
Something dark flashed across his face.
“She already is.”
My breath caught.
The raw honesty in his voice hit harder than it should have.
For one brief second, his eyes met mine again.
And suddenly the tension between us returned full force.
Like the rest of the world disappeared.
Again.
The girl noticed.
And looked furious.
“Unbelievable,” she snapped before turning sharply toward Kael. “Your father will hear about this.”
Kael looked entirely unimpressed.
“I don’t care.”
That clearly wasn’t the answer she expected.
Because hurt flashed briefly across her face before she masked it quickly.
Interesting.
Very interesting.
She was in love with him.
And judging by the cold fury in her expression—
I was becoming a problem.
The girl finally looked at me one last time.
“If you’re smart,” she said quietly, “you’ll leave this campus before he destroys your life.”
Then she disappeared back into the trees.
Ronan sighed dramatically.
“Well,” he muttered. “That could’ve gone better.”
Kael ignored him completely.
His focus returned to me instantly.
Like it always did.
“You’re hurt.”
I blinked.
“What?”
He stepped closer carefully.
Too carefully.
Like I was something fragile now.
His fingers wrapped gently around my wrist where the girl had grabbed me.
Heat spread through my skin immediately.
A faint red mark had already formed.
Kael stared at it with terrifying intensity.
Then—
Very slowly—
he lifted my wrist toward his mouth.
My pulse exploded.
“Kael,” Ronan warned quietly.
Too late.
Kael’s lips brushed softly against the mark on my skin.
And the second they did—
A violent shiver tore through me.
Heat rushed low into my stomach so suddenly my knees nearly weakened.
Kael inhaled sharply against my wrist.
His eyes darkened instantly.
The grip on my arm tightened slightly.
Possessively.
The entire atmosphere shifted.
Ronan swore under his breath.
Because now Kael was looking at me like he wanted to do far worse things than kiss my wrist.
And judging by the dangerous hunger spreading across his face—
He was very close to forgetting how to stop himself.
