A devil’s offer in a penthouse

950 Words
Claire didn’t respond to Logan’s message. Not at first. She spent the day pacing Ethan’s penthouse, each step echoing against polished floors and expensive silence. The tension in her chest had settled into something sharper: focus. She was no longer reacting. She was planning. And this time, Logan would not see her coming. When the second message arrived, it was short, but colder. Don’t push me. You want this war, I’ll give it to you. — L She smiled. So he was cracking. ⸻ Later that evening, Ethan came home early. Claire looked up from her spot on the couch where she had been re-reading the contract files for the third time. “You’re home before 9,” she said. He raised a brow. “Don’t act like you know my schedule.” “I used to,” she murmured. “In another life.” He didn’t answer, just dropped his keys in the bowl by the door and loosened his tie. “I’m meeting Logan tomorrow,” she said. That stopped him cold. His eyes met hers like a blade drawn mid-air. “Excuse me?” Claire stood. “He texted. Wants to talk.” Ethan’s voice dropped. “And you agreed?” “I didn’t say yes.” “But you’re thinking about it.” “I don’t need your permission, Ethan.” “No,” he said, crossing the room slowly, “but you might need my protection.” Claire laughed once—dry and bitter. “Now you care?” He stopped just in front of her. “I never stopped caring, Claire. I just stopped showing it.” The air between them tensed like a wire stretched too tight. “You want to sit across from the man who tried to destroy you?” Ethan asked. “Be my guest. But don’t be surprised when he smiles while loading the next bullet.” She raised her chin. “Then I’ll smile while I stop him.” A silence hung between them. Then, almost grudgingly, Ethan said, “Where’s the meeting?” Claire held up her phone. “Penthouse lounge at The Kingsford Hotel. Public. Cameras. Neutral ground.” Ethan didn’t blink. “I’ll be there.” She frowned. “You’re not invited.” He stepped closer, eyes hard. “You’re under my roof. That makes it my problem.” Claire swallowed hard, torn between irritation and something far more dangerous—gratitude. ⸻ The next evening, Claire walked into the Kingsford Hotel like she owned the damn place. Black heels. Black dress. Hair in a sleek twist. Not the crying bride. Not the girl who was thrown out. She looked like the woman who could bankrupt you with a stare. Ethan followed her in, but kept his distance, hanging back near the entrance of the penthouse lounge. He was dressed to kill—charcoal suit, no tie, black shirt, cold expression. Claire knew he wouldn’t speak unless he had to. But he was watching. Always watching. She found Logan seated at a private table, his signature smugness wrapped in a navy blue suit and a glass of scotch. “Claire,” he said smoothly. “You look… powerful.” She sat without a smile. “Don’t bother.” He chuckled. “No foreplay? You’ve changed.” “You haven’t.” He leaned back. “That hurts.” “Good.” Logan sipped his drink, eyeing her. “You came with backup. I see the Ice King is here.” “Ethan has nothing to do with this.” Logan’s eyes glinted. “Funny. That’s not what the tabloids say. You two have been cozy.” Claire smirked. “Does it bother you?” He leaned forward. “What bothers me is that you walked away from something real, Claire. I loved you. Still do.” She didn’t flinch. “No. You loved what I gave you. Access. Power. Image. Not me.” “That’s not true.” “It’s exactly true. And now you’ve lost your grip on all of it.” He chuckled lowly. “You think walking away from our marriage gave you power?” “I know taking back my inheritance did.” Logan’s smile dropped. There it was. The mask cracking. “You went to the lawyers,” he said flatly. “I did.” “You won’t win this, Claire. You think this world plays fair?” “No,” she said. “But I don’t play scared anymore.” Logan exhaled and leaned back in his chair. “What do you want?” “I want out,” she said. “Out of every contract. Every clause. Every ‘future’ you planned that included me. And I want the media to know exactly what you did.” Logan’s jaw ticked. “And if I offer you a better deal?” Claire blinked. “You’re still bargaining?” “I’m offering a solution. We marry anyway. Quietly. No press. No mess. You get everything back—plus power. I get the image. We both win.” She stared at him, stunned. “You think I’d still marry you?” she whispered. “I think you like control. And marrying me gives you more than walking away does.” Claire stood slowly. “Logan,” she said, “if I ever marry again… it’ll be for love. Not leverage.” He rose too, his voice low. “Then you’re a fool.” She leaned in close. “No,” she whispered. “I’m just finally awake.” She turned and walked away. But not before glancing back. Ethan was still there. Still watching. And for the first time… He looked proud.
