A few days pass, and I don’t hear from Alistair. He and Curtis missed school for half the week, and the other Black Cats seem clueless. I can’t reach either of them. Nagging thoughts consume my mind on what might’ve happened. Did the clan kidnap my dad? Did they get caught? I borrowed Ruth’s phone—more like snuck it out of her purse—to call Joel. “I have no idea what’s going on,” Joel says through the phone. “I didn’t go since Ruth would’ve killed me if I did.” “So, Alistair didn’t tell you anything?” “No, but it shouldn’t be a surprise since they’re dealing with the kingpin,” he tells me. “It wouldn’t be easy holding that guy down.
