Chapter 7: Confrontation

Diana’s POV The day began like any other, yet something heavy settled in my chest the moment I opened my eyes. It was the kind of pressure that made it hard to breathe, the kind that reminded me that wounds did not simply vanish because time had passed. Kane. Lauren. Their names burned through my thoughts, sharp and unforgiving. The betrayal replayed in my mind, over and over, like a cruel loop I could not escape. The accusations. The coldness in Kane’s eyes. The way he had believed every lie without giving me a chance to speak. The way my own sister had stood beside him, pretending innocence while stabbing me in the back. I pushed myself out of bed and walked to the floor-to-ceiling windows of my private villa, staring out at the city waking beneath the pale morning sky. Somewhere out there, they were living comfortably, thriving on the ruins of my marriage. And today, I would remind them that I was not broken. Not anymore. I took a long breath, steadying my heartbeat. Adrian and I had planned this carefully. Every detail, every move. Still, knowing what was coming did nothing to calm the storm raging inside me. This was my first step back into their world, and I refused to show weakness. I showered, dressed in a simple but powerful outfit, and applied my makeup with precision. Nothing flashy. Nothing dramatic. Just control, confidence, and quiet strength. By the time I finished, the woman staring back at me in the mirror barely resembled the shattered wife Kane had thrown away. The doorbell rang. The sound sliced through the silence, sending a jolt through my nerves. My heart skipped once before I forced it back into rhythm. I knew who it was, yet the finality of it made my palms grow damp. I walked to the door and opened it. Adrian stood there, impeccably dressed in a tailored dark suit, his expression unreadable. His eyes, however, searched mine with sharp intensity, as if measuring my resolve. “Are you ready?” he asked quietly. I held his gaze for a moment, then nodded. “As ready as I will ever be.” He stepped aside, allowing me to walk past him. The ride to Kane’s company headquarters was silent. The city blurred beyond the car windows, but my mind was fixed on what waited ahead. By the time we arrived, my nerves had hardened into steel. The building towered above us, sleek and imposing, all glass and steel, a symbol of power and wealth. Once, I had stood here proudly as Kane Sinclair’s wife. Now, I returned as something far more dangerous. We entered without hesitation. The receptionist barely had time to react before Adrian stated our names. The color drained from her face instantly, and within moments, we were escorted toward Kane’s office. Each step echoed in my ears. The doors opened. Lauren was the first to see us. She stood near the desk, reviewing documents, her posture confident, her appearance flawless. For a split second, her mask slipped. Her eyes widened, shock flickering across her face before she quickly replaced it with a practiced smile. Kane, seated behind the desk, had not yet noticed. Not until Adrian spoke. “Kane Sinclair,” he said calmly, authority woven into every syllable. “It has been a while.” Kane looked up. The effect was immediate. The blood drained from his face. His gaze locked onto mine, disbelief and confusion crashing together in his expression. For a moment, he simply stared, as if questioning whether I was real. “Diana,” he whispered. Hearing my name from his lips stirred something dangerous inside me. Memories surfaced uninvited. Late-night laughter. Soft promises. The way he once held me like I was his entire world. All lies. Lauren shifted beside him, her fingers brushing his sleeve as if to ground herself. “What is she doing here?” she asked sharply, though her voice lacked conviction. Adrian stepped forward, placing himself subtly between me and them. “We are here on business.” Kane stood abruptly, his chair scraping loudly against the floor. “What business could possibly involve her?” I finally moved. Each step toward him felt deliberate, powerful. The room seemed to shrink as I closed the distance, forcing him to face the reality he had tried to erase. “You seem surprised,” I said softly. “Did you really think I would disappear forever?” His jaw tightened. “You left.” “You threw me out,” I corrected calmly. “There is a difference.” Lauren scoffed. “Do not twist the story. You disgraced yourself.” I turned my gaze toward her, meeting her eyes fully for the first time since the betrayal. My voice remained steady, but inside, fire roared. “You destroyed my life and still dare to stand there pretending righteousness,” I said. “That takes courage. Or shamelessness.” Her face flushed. “You cannot come here and make accusations.” “I am not accusing,” I replied. “I am stating facts.” Kane raised a hand. “Enough. Why are you really here, Diana?” I looked at him, truly looked, and saw something I had not expected. Uncertainty. Regret. Fear. “I am here to reclaim everything that was stolen from me,” I said. “Piece by piece. Starting with the truth.” Adrian placed a folder on the desk. “These documents contain evidence of corporate manipulation, illegal contract alterations, and internal fraud. Much of it traces directly back to Lauren.” Lauren stiffened. “That is absurd.” “Is it?” Adrian asked calmly. “Perhaps you would like to explain the offshore accounts, the falsified reports, and the missing funds.” Silence crashed into the room. Kane flipped through the documents, his face growing darker with every page. His hands trembled slightly. “Lauren,” he said quietly. “Tell me this is not true.” She swallowed. “Kane, I can explain.” I felt no satisfaction in her panic. Only cold resolve. “This is only the beginning,” I said. “I want what was taken from me. My reputation. My dignity. And eventually, everything you built on my pain.” Kane lifted his gaze to mine, desperation etched into his features. “What do you want from me?” I held his eyes, letting him see the woman he had underestimated. “I want justice.” I turned and walked toward the door, Adrian following closely behind. My heart pounded, but my steps remained steady. As the doors closed behind us, I exhaled for the first time in what felt like years. This confrontation was only the beginning. And I was just getting started
