A Wolf

Chapter 2 A Wolf. Aria Silvercrest. “You're a monster! Tell them! Tell everyone what you are! Show them what you did in that bathroom!” Melissandra was yelling her lungs out as she shook me hard in front of most of the students. “Let go of my hand! You're hurting me!” I tried to pull myself away from her, but her grip tightened against my wrist. She wasn't ready to let go. She wanted to counter the dirty rumors that were spreading about her. 'The queen bee of the school messing herself up after an altercation with the girl she always bullies.' That had become the jest of the school after some girls found out a week ago, and Melisandra had never been as furious with us as she was right now. “She turned into a beast! A monster!” She tried to explain, raising her voice higher in the process. “You would kill yourself if you saw her!” Her eyes were wide, and one could still see the remnants of the terror in them. “I don't know what you're talking about.” This time I was able to pry my hands away from her insanely strong grip. Melissandra became really desperate this time. “I now see why you stick together with your witch friend.” She began taunting, “Monsters attract monsters!” There was that word again. Monster. It sent chills down my spine, especially when I had flashbacks of that afternoon in the bathroom. My teeth still ached where the fangs had elongated, and there was a dull throb in my fingers to remind me of the claws. A monster. I wanted to believe that I was hallucinating that day, but even I couldn't convince myself about that. It was real. Something had happened that day. In fact, even after that day, I could still feel some changes in my body. I was more aware of everything, every sound… even the heartbeats of people around me. Cold sweat lined my forehead when Melissandra said those words. She wanted to rile me up, and it seemed to be working because the heat had clawed up my chest this time. My memories flashed between my middle school years, especially the way she used to bully us. No, torture us. She was the monster, and not me! Something began to stir inside me, as if there was another consciousness somewhere embedded deep in my mind. “I wonder if your mom is a witch too. Maybe that's why you stick to Chloe.” Melissandra kept taunting. “Come to think of it, she and your best friend dress the same way. No wonder…" She clicked her tongue and looked at me with those vile eyes of hers. “You're literally the spawn of a devil in every sense.” My breath slowed instantly, and my whole body turned to stare at Melisandra. “Did you just refer to my mother as a devil?” I could feel the blood roaring in my veins, and the violent anger was back. It was like I wanted to hit something or smash something against the wall… preferably Melissandra's head because I was tired of hearing her talk. Melissandra scoffed. “Only devils and monsters have claws; how else would you be one if she isn't one?. Are you sure she isn't the reason you don't have a father? Did she suck the blood of the poor man until he bled and died?” I didn't know when my hands lunged towards her until my fingers grasped the hem of her shirt. “Melissandra!” I warned her with gritted teeth, my nostrils flaring as I tried to keep the anger at bay. Her heartbeat was louder this time. I could smell the fear that emanated from her. It reeked. Her eyes were wide with terror, but the defiance in them told me she wasn't going to back down. She wouldn't mind putting her life at risk just to make the world see me as the monster she just painted me to be. “If I'm lying, tell me… Why haven't you met your father before? Did she lie to you that he died in an accident? Why aren't there any records of his death anywhere?” When she saw me pause, she continued boldly, “You think I didn't check? You may be a monster, but I have the connections to find out things. She bled him dry.” Melissandra's eyes opened wider as she let out a maniacal laughter that grated my nerves. “STOP IT!” My hands were vibrating now. Something was moving underneath my skin, like it wanted to tear out of my body and come to the surface. There was a collective gasp from the audience, and my eyes snapped to them. “...her eyes…" “It changed colors...” “Her teeth… Look!” Someone from the crowd pointed out, and I could feel all their emotions. I could smell it. They were all terrified. “I told you! I told you all! You didn't believe me! She is a monster! And she can kill us anytime!” Melissandra screamed at the top of her lungs, even though the claws on my fingers were slowly elongating towards her neck. The vein pulsed, and I fought the urge to tear it out with my claws. A scream erupted in the corridor. “She… She is changing! There is a tail." At first I couldn't wrap my head around what she was saying until I felt myself shrinking, and I could feel the ground closely with all four limbs of mine. My eyes settled on the polished floor of the school corridor, and I saw my reflection staring back at me. The horror and fear overcame me at once. What was this? Was I some kind of animal? Was I cursed by someone? Soon, I felt sticks, stones, and books being thrown at me, and I didn't think twice before I started running. I didn't know where I was headed, but I kept running until I heard bounding footsteps behind me. I made a quick turn to look, thinking it was still the students who were behind me. My eyes focused immediately on the huge brown wolf that ran behind me, and I stumbled into a log of wood in fear, tumbling down the woods of the forest. The brown wolf had still followed behind me; his eyes were careful and calculating, and I couldn't help but feel a kind of familiarity with those eyes that stared at me. But I was still paralyzed with fear, and all I could do was watch. And I watched as the wolf morphed into the most handsome naked man I'd ever seen. Karl Oakley.
