Chapter 5 The Cruelty of Fate. Nate Veridian. “Are you sure you really have to go?” Malia, my sister, held my wrists tightly, fighting the tears from falling from her eyes. Her face was pale, and her lips were dry. “Yes, I have to.” I told her firmly. “It’s the only way… the only option we have left.” A stray tear ran down her eyes. “There's another choice, Nate.” Her sallow eyes pierced into mine, trying to get me to understand her standpoint. I shook my head and drew my wrists from her grip. “No, Malia. No. I’ve lost so much already, and I’m not ready to lose you. Not when there is still an option to help.” “What if… what if the pack finds out? What if they punish you and take you from me? Who will look after me? I would die lonely, Nate. I don’t want that. I don’t want anything to happen to you. Going back there will alert them. The school is under Father's name, and…” The tears were pouring from her eyes in torrents, and my heart clenched at her words. “We were banned from going into the pack, not from the school.” I tried to reassure her, but even I did not believe the words that came out of my mouth. This was a probability. I was taking a considerable risk, and Malia was right; I could be executed if I was ever found out. But I wasn’t going to sit back, fold my hands, and do nothing out of fear while Malia shriveled from the inside every day. “I promise not to get caught.” I got on my knees at the bed where she was lying . “You know I always keep my promises, right? I will save you.” “You don’t have to… I know you still blame yourself for Mom's death, but it wasn’t you. You didn’t cause it. You were still a child.” I balled my fists at the memory of our late mother, dying from the heartbreak of the death of my father, and I couldn’t do anything but stand and watch. I hated that feeling of weakness then. And now, Malia was suffering from one of the most common sicknesses that plagued the Veridian Pack females, but we were unable to have access to the treatment because of the exile that was imposed on my family after my father’s death. The little hope we had was having the human doctors treat her, but it was too costly, and the only way I could come up with that amount of money was to register and win the upcoming Veridian School Competition. The prize money was the exact amount needed for Malia’s treatment, and nothing was going to stop me from getting that money, even though it meant risking my life. “Do you remember Father's friend? Principal Thorne?” I squeezed her hands softly, a little nudge for her to try to remember. “He used to come around when we were still young and usually thought that both of us were identical twins.”A soft smile formed on her lips. “I remember. He used to call me the female version of you… As if I wasn’t,” she scoffed, but the smile remained from the memory, something that warmed my heart. “What about him?” I rubbed my hands together. “He is the current principal of Veridian Academy, and I reached out to him. Malia,” I reached out my hand to hold hers again, “he's someone we can trust. He will keep my identity from the students and the packs. I told him about your condition, and he was deeply moved, so he allowed me a temporary transfer until the competitions are over.” She let out a deep breath and asked me, “Are you sure you can trust him? Because… I don’t. You know how Father…” Her voice trailed off as it broke. Of course I knew. He was betrayed by someone he trusted with his life. “I don’t trust him with my life, but I trust him enough for this.” I assured Malia over and over again until she visibly relaxed. “I wish you luck.” She finally said. “Don’t worry about me when you’re there, okay? Focus on the competition, and enjoy yourself too with people your age, okay? Please promise me that too.” ** When I stepped into the school, my wolf began spinning in circles. This was the first time he was ever excited about something, and that could only mean one thing: our mate was here. Not long after, her scent reached our nose, and I lost control of my mind and began searching for her. My legs moved on their own, hurriedly bumping and pushing students out of the way. The nearer I got, the more I felt that something was wrong. I couldn’t feel her presence, but I could tell that was where her scent was the strongest. I heard conceited giggles immediately I entered the wide swimming pool, which was used by students for their leisure, and something twisted in my gut as I looked everywhere for her. There was a ripple in the middle of the swimming pool as if someone had dived in or… been pushed inside. I stared at the group of girls who stood at the corner of the swimming pool, laughing and pointing towards the ripple in the water. I didn’t bother thinking my wolf wouldn’t give me that luxury, and I dived into the pool, searching for her. And when I saw her, even under the water, my wolf let out a howl that was mixed with rage and excitement. Rage that someone tried to hurt our mate, and excitement that we had even found her. My fingers circled her arms as I began pulling her out of the water. “What do you think you were doing? What if she died?” I growled loudly at the girls, not caring how they shrunk back in fear. My mate was sputtering water out from her lungs and I turned to help her out, when something made me freeze in step. She was stunning, yes, but there was the mark singed on her collarbone. The Silvercrest sigil was placed where direct descendants had theirs. That meant that she was the Alpha’s daughter. The daughter of the man who was the genesis of my misery, and fate cruelly bound me to her. She looked healthy, and there was nothing out of place, except the look of shock on her face. Not just shock, but admiration. I was immediately disgusted. “Mate…” she whispered softly, but I felt bile rise in my throat when I remembered my father and brother's mangled body that was left to rot, my mother's dry skin when she died from the heartbreak, and Malia’s current condition. How could I accept her as my mate when her father destroyed my family? My hands were vibrating as I tried to ground myself from lunging at her and snapping her neck in two. “I, Nate Veridian, reject you as my mate.” My calmness shocked me, but it was better than what I had in mind. I said my name slowly too so that no one around will pick up my surname. Hot, searing pain ripped through my heart as if I was being stabbed, but I took in the pain standing. I wasn’t going to mate with her, never. Not after everything. Her scream rang out as she crumpled on the floor with tears in her eyes. "No…” she was whimpering as she clutched her chest in pain. “Why? No!” Almost immediately, a man appeared by her side, trying to hold her up. “What did you do?” His eyes glowed as he stared at me angrily. The hot white jealousy was still there as I watched another man touching her. It still hurt. His eyes widened slightly, and I could swear I saw some kind of relief in his eyes, but it was gone almost immediately. “Accept the rejection, Aria. It will hurt less. Accept it!” he urged her gently while holding her up, as if he cared about her. Because if he did care about her, he wouldn’t have been standing in the shadows, watching, while she was drowning.
