Chapter 5

Anaiah opened the third email with caution. She had woken up this morning with hopes so high because she knew that the application she filled would have been responded to by now. As she opened the first email, her smile slowly dissipated. A million thoughts ran through her mind and she could feel a chill run down her spine. She had been rejected and she didn't understand why. She had made sure she read the details of the job and its description and she was sure that she met every requirement. As a matter of fact, with her records and recommendations, she thought she was the perfect candidate. Her frown deepened as she stared at the email, hoping that it would magically transform into something positive. But it didn't. She moved on to the next and hoped for the best. It was like a low blow to her and she began to think that maybe she hadn't read it right. She went back to read the first again and it still hasn't changed. She read the next and sighed loudly. What had gone wrong? Somehow, she felt the universe owed her for how right she had been living for the past years. Or was this a payment for her sins? Third time is always the charm. She braced herself up and hoped for the best. Maybe she was too quick to judge. This was going to be it. Or maybe not. “Good day, Ms. Thompson. We are sorry to inform you… " She didn't need to read the rest. The last two emails had the same beginning and she knew the remaining. Well, so much for good records. She hadn't thought getting a job would be this complicated. Maybe she would have to settle for a job less classic. As long as it paid the bills. The landlady had been bothering her about the electricity bills that she hadn't stacked up. The zeros on that bill scared her and now she would have to pay for something she hadn't enjoyed. She could go to court. But that would be stupid because going to court would require money. Hiring a lawyer and what not. Besides, she wasn't ready for all that stress. Her hidden fear of the police hadn't vanished after all these years. A knock on the door brought her out of her thoughts. She wondered who it would be because no one knew she was here. She had made sure of that. Besides, the homeowner had already been here this morning. “You thought you could hide from me?" Belinda stood at the door with a very large smile. Anaiah was mortified because she has made sure she moved far away from all her college friends so that they won't find her. Belinda pushed her aside and walked in with a bag in her hand. She looked around the house and smiled a bit. She managed to ask around and found out where her friend was. She couldn't leave Anaiah even if she wanted to. The both of them were like two peas in a pod and they were joined at the hip. Things hadn't always been like this between them. The moment Anaiah had walked in through those doors, she disliked her immediately. And Belinda made sure she told her. But after that night when she had almost been r***d at a party, and somehow Anaiah happened to show up and save her, she has basically owed her life fo her. They became sisters since that day and their contrasting personalities made them even more compatible. Belinda had noticed that Anaiah wasn't exactly looking for friendship. She had run away at every chance she got and isolated herself from everyone. But she has pursued her. Like a lion after it's prey. It was love, pure love and respect for her and she couldn't contain it. Anaiah moved closer to her and looked at her like she had grown two heads. She wasn't surprised that Belinda had found her. She always had her way of getting what she wanted. “I won't even ask how you found me. How are you?" She sat down on the couch and looked at her closely. “I miss you, Anny. You disappeared after graduation and no one saw you after that. So I had to look for you to make sure everything was okay." “Well, as you can see, everything is fine. I am fine." Belinda looked at her friend with pity. She knew that she carried something so heavy within her and nothing would make her spill her guts. No matter how many times she had asked her to talk about the issue, she has angrily asked her to mind her business. “Are you sure? You don't entirely look very happy." Belinda noticed. “I'm fine. What can I offer you?" “Nothing. I'm okay." They both sat in silence and awkwardness. While Belinda stared at her friend and took in her features, making sure to notice every detail about her. Back in school, everyone had thought she was hopelessly in love with Anaiah. At some point, she has thought it too. But she realized that it was just pure love and care for her and she didn't want to taint that love. Anaiah's mind centered around the rejection she had faced and she worried. “What is going on? What's wrong, Anny?" “I applied for a couple of jobs but I got rejected." Now Belinda understood. “Why didn't you tell me you were looking for a job? I could have-" “You don't owe me anything! I am perfectly capable of finding a job myself." Belinda rose up from her feet. “I know that. I was just trying to help!" “No! I don't need your help! I will get a job myself." She knew how stubborn Anaiah could be. She just didn't realize how dangerous it would prove for her. “Anny-" Anaiah rose up from her seat and walked to the door. This was the exact reason why she didn't want anyone knowing where she was. “Please leave. I was busy before you came in." Belinda picked up her bag without any argument. She looked at Anaiah one last time in the eye before walking out. She was going to take care of the situation, with or without her permission.
