Marina’s POV
Marina burst through the doors of the ballroom, her breath coming in ragged gasps as she stumbled out into the cool night air. The gardens stretched out before her, a quiet oasis of moonlit paths and whispering leaves, but all she could hear was the frantic pounding of her heart. Her mind raced, replaying the moment over and over again—the touch of his hand, the way his golden eyes had pierced through her, the overwhelming pull of the mate bond.
Mate.
The word echoed in her thoughts, sending a shiver down her spine. It didn’t make sense. How could this stranger, this masked man she had never met before, be her mate? And yet, the bond had felt so real, so powerful that she couldn’t deny it. Her wolf stirred within her, restless and confused, urging her to go back to him.
But she couldn’t.
Marina sank down onto a stone bench hidden beneath the shade of a towering oak tree, her hands trembling as she tried to catch her breath. The cool night air wrapped around her, soothing her flushed skin, but her mind was still spinning. She felt as though she had been thrown into the middle of a storm—one that threatened to tear her apart from the inside out.
What was she supposed to do now?
The mate bond was something she had only ever heard about in stories. It was supposed to be a gift, a connection stronger than anything else in the world. But standing in that ballroom, face-to-face with a man she didn’t even know, it hadn’t felt like a gift. It had felt like a trap, pulling her in too fast, too hard.
Marina buried her face in her hands, trying to block out the whirlwind of emotions swirling inside her. This wasn’t supposed to happen. She wasn’t supposed to be here. She had come to the ball as a chance to escape, to feel something different for a night, but now everything had changed.
“What do I do?” she whispered to herself, her voice shaky. Her wolf didn’t respond, but she felt its presence, pressing against her mind, urging her to go back.
“No,” she murmured, shaking her head. “I can’t. I don’t even know him.”
Her hands curled into fists in her lap as she fought to regain control of herself. She needed to think. She needed to figure out what had just happened and what it meant. But her mind was too clouded with emotions—fear, confusion, and something else. Something she couldn’t quite name.
The mate bond. It was pulling at her, tugging at her like an invisible thread, trying to draw her back to him. But she wasn’t ready. Not yet.
“I need to leave,” she whispered, standing up on shaky legs. The thought of running away—of escaping this entire situation—made her feel a little better. If she left now, maybe she could pretend none of this had ever happened. Maybe she could forget about the Alpha and the bond and go back to her life before.
But deep down, she knew that wasn’t possible.
Stephan’s POV
Stephan paced the length of his private quarters, his thoughts in chaos. The mate bond still pulsed through him, a raw, untamed energy that wouldn’t let him rest. It was unlike anything he had ever felt before—a connection so powerful it left him breathless. And yet, he didn’t even know her name.
Mate.
Mateo, his wolf, growled softly in the back of his mind, restless and frustrated. The bond was too strong to ignore, and it was driving his wolf mad. He had felt her pull, the way their souls seemed to recognize each other the moment they had locked eyes, but now she was gone—fled into the night, leaving him with nothing but the memory of her touch.
Stephan ran a hand through his hair, trying to push back the storm of emotions swirling inside him. He needed to find her. That much was clear. But even as the bond tugged at him, demanding he claim her, another voice—quieter but no less powerful—whispered in his ear.
Lilith.
Stephan’s chest tightened at the thought of her. Lilith had been by his side for years, ever since they had made their arrangement. She had been loyal, steadfast, and though she was not his fated mate, he had promised her that they would lead together. She had earned that much.
But now?
Stephan growled low in his throat, the conflict tearing at him. The mate bond was undeniable, something sacred, but his sense of duty held him back. He had responsibilities—promises he couldn’t simply cast aside because of the bond.
Mateo snarled in his head, pushing against the barriers Stephan had erected. We cannot ignore this. She is ours.
“I know,” Stephan muttered, rubbing his temples. “But it’s not that simple.”
Before he could dwell on it further, the door to his chambers creaked open, and Lilith stepped inside. Her eyes scanned the room, narrowing slightly when she saw his restless pacing.
“Stephan, what’s going on?”
Her voice was sharp, cutting through his thoughts like a blade. Stephan stilled, forcing himself to meet her gaze. “Nothing,” he lied, though the word tasted bitter on his tongue.
Lilith raised an eyebrow, crossing her arms over her chest. “Nothing? You’ve been distracted all night. You’ve barely said a word to me since the ball began. Something is wrong.”
Stephan’s jaw clenched. Lilith had always been perceptive, but tonight, her suspicion was dangerously close to the truth. He needed to tread carefully. He couldn’t afford to let her see the storm raging inside him.
“I’m fine,” he said, his voice a little too controlled. “Just tired. It’s been a long night.”
Lilith didn’t look convinced, but she didn’t press the issue. Instead, she sighed and walked toward the window, her back to him. “We’ve been through a lot, Stephan. You know that. If something’s wrong, you can tell me.”
Stephan’s chest tightened. Lilith had been by his side through every challenge, every battle. He owed her the truth, but how could he tell her about the mate bond? How could he tell her that everything had changed in a single moment?
“I’m just tired,” he repeated, though the words felt hollow.
Lilith glanced over her shoulder, her eyes narrowing slightly. For a moment, Stephan thought she might push him further, but then she sighed and nodded.
“Alright,” she said quietly. “But you know where to find me if you want to talk.”
She left without another word, and Stephan exhaled slowly, the weight of his secret pressing down on him. He had found his mate. And now, everything was about to change.
