Chapter 7: Stephan’s Dilemma

997 Words
Stephan sat at his desk, the weight of the crown feeling heavier than usual. The stack of documents in front of him blurred as his mind drifted, unable to focus on the words printed across the pages. He should have been reviewing the latest reports—territorial disputes, border patrols, pack alliances—but none of it mattered. Not when his thoughts kept circling back to her. Mate. The word echoed in his mind, filling every corner of his thoughts. It had been days since the ball, since he had felt the undeniable pull of the bond. But it hadn’t faded. If anything, it had only grown stronger, gnawing at him, making it impossible to think of anything else. He growled softly under his breath, running a hand through his hair. Mateo was restless, pacing at the edges of his mind, pushing against the walls Stephan had erected. His wolf was impatient, demanding action, but Stephan had responsibilities—duties that couldn’t be ignored. Find her. Claim her. Mateo’s voice was a low growl, filled with frustration. Stephan clenched his fists, fighting to maintain control. He knew what the bond meant. He had felt it in every fiber of his being the moment their eyes had locked across the ballroom. But he couldn’t let it consume him. Not now. His gaze drifted to the window, where the sky outside had darkened with the approaching evening. The kingdom was at peace—for now. But there were always threats, always dangers lurking just beyond the borders. As Alpha King, it was his job to ensure that peace lasted. His people depended on him for stability, for protection. He couldn’t afford to be distracted by the bond. But no matter how much he tried to push it aside, it was always there, a constant hum in the back of his mind. “Stephan.” The sound of his Beta’s voice snapped him out of his thoughts, and he blinked, turning to see Maximus standing in the doorway. His Beta’s brow was furrowed, concern etched across his features. “We need to discuss the issue with the northern border,” Maximus said, stepping into the room. “There’s been more unrest. The neighboring pack is claiming part of our territory.” Stephan nodded, though his mind was still miles away. He gestured for Maximus to sit, but even as his Beta began explaining the situation, Stephan found his thoughts drifting again. The pull of the bond was too strong, tugging at him, pulling him away from the here and now. Maximus’s voice faded into the background as Stephan’s mind wandered. He could still see her face, still feel the electric current that had passed between them the moment they had touched. It had been like nothing he had ever felt before—a connection that went deeper than anything he could have imagined. And now, that connection was an ever-present weight, pressing down on him, making it impossible to think of anything else. “Stephan?” Maximus’s voice cut through his thoughts again, and Stephan blinked, realizing that his Beta was watching him closely. “Are you even listening to me?” Maximus asked, his tone tinged with frustration. Stephan exhaled, rubbing his temples. “I’m listening.” Maximus raised an eyebrow. “No, you’re not. What’s going on?” Stephan hesitated, his jaw tightening. He couldn’t tell Maximus. Not yet. The bond was still too raw, too new. He hadn’t even figured out how to deal with it himself, let alone explain it to someone else. “It’s nothing,” Stephan muttered, waving a hand dismissively. “Just tired.” Maximus didn’t look convinced, but he didn’t push further. Instead, he sighed and leaned back in his chair. “Well, you need to focus. The northern border situation is getting worse. If we don’t act soon, we could be looking at a full-blown conflict.” Stephan nodded absently, though his mind was still far from the issue at hand. He knew he needed to focus. The kingdom came first. Always. But how could he focus on territorial disputes when the bond was pulling at him, demanding his attention? His thoughts drifted back to her. He didn’t even know her name, but the bond had claimed her as his mate. It was stronger than anything he had ever felt, and ignoring it was becoming impossible. Every moment he spent away from her felt like a physical ache, a void that could only be filled by her presence. Mateo growled impatiently. Find her. She is ours. “I can’t,” Stephan muttered under his breath, though he wasn’t sure if he was speaking to his wolf or to himself. “Not yet.” Maximus glanced at him, his expression unreadable. “Stephan, if something’s wrong, you need to tell me. We’ve been through too much together for you to shut me out.” Stephan’s chest tightened. He knew Maximus was right. His Beta had been by his side through everything—every battle, every challenge. But this was different. This wasn’t a problem that could be solved with strategy or brute force. This was the mate bond—something primal, something that went beyond logic. “I’m fine,” Stephan said, though the words felt hollow. “I’ll handle it.” Maximus studied him for a moment longer before nodding. “Alright. But don’t let this distract you. We’ve got a kingdom to protect.” Stephan nodded, though his mind was already wandering again. The kingdom. His responsibilities. Lilith. Everything felt like it was crashing down around him, and at the center of it all was the bond. The one thing he couldn’t control. As Maximus left the room, Stephan sat back in his chair, staring blankly at the documents spread across his desk. He needed to focus. He needed to be the Alpha King his people expected him to be. But all he could think about was her.
