Chapter 9: The Alpha King’s Burden

1015 Words
Stephan sat at the head of the long, polished table, his eyes scanning the faces of the advisors gathered around him. The air in the room was tense, thick with the weight of decisions that needed to be made. The northern border was under threat again, and the neighboring packs were growing restless. It was a situation that required his full attention. But his mind wasn’t in the room. As one of his advisors spoke, outlining the latest intelligence from the border, Stephan’s thoughts drifted, pulled by the constant hum of the bond. He could feel it, like an invisible thread connecting him to her—Marina. Even now, miles away, the bond tugged at him, demanding his attention, refusing to be ignored. “Alpha?” The voice of one of his advisors cut through the haze of his thoughts, and Stephan blinked, forcing himself to focus. “What is it?” he asked, his tone sharper than he intended. The advisor, an older wolf with graying hair, cleared his throat. “I asked if you had any instructions for the northern patrols. The situation is becoming critical.” Stephan clenched his jaw, nodding absently. “Increase patrols. Make sure we’re keeping a close eye on the border.” The advisor nodded, scribbling something down on the papers in front of him, but Stephan’s attention was already slipping again. He couldn’t help it. No matter how much he tried to focus, no matter how much he forced himself to think about his responsibilities, the bond was always there, pulling him back to her. Mate. Mateo growled softly in the back of his mind, his impatience growing. Stephan could feel his wolf’s frustration building with each passing hour, with each moment they spent apart from her. Mateo wanted to find her, to claim her, and Stephan could feel the same need gnawing at him, making it harder to concentrate on anything else. We need her. Stephan took a slow breath, his fingers tightening around the armrests of his chair. He knew. He felt it too. The bond was getting stronger, more insistent. It had been days since the ball, and every minute away from her felt like a strain, like a part of him was missing. But he couldn’t just leave. Not yet. The kingdom came first. His people needed him. Stephan’s gaze flickered back to the table, where his advisors were continuing to discuss strategy, but their voices faded into the background. He had always been able to maintain control, to separate his personal feelings from his duty as Alpha King. But this? This was different. The mate bond was different. Stephan exhaled slowly, trying to ground himself in the moment, but it was no use. The pull toward Marina was too strong. Every instinct in his body was telling him to go to her, to find her, to claim what was his. And with each passing day, it was becoming harder to ignore. “Alpha?” Maximus’s voice broke through his thoughts, and Stephan turned to see his Beta watching him closely, concern etched into his features. “Are you alright?” Stephan nodded, though the tension in his chest told a different story. “I’m fine.” Maximus didn’t look convinced, but he didn’t push further. Instead, he leaned forward, his voice lowered. “You’ve been... distracted. More than usual. Is something going on?” Stephan met his Beta’s gaze, the weight of the question pressing down on him. He had known Maximus for years, had fought beside him in countless battles. There was no one he trusted more. But this? The mate bond? He hadn’t even figured out how to deal with it himself. How could he explain it to someone else? “I’m handling it,” Stephan said, though the words felt like a lie. Maximus studied him for a moment longer before nodding. “If you need anything, you know where to find me.” Stephan nodded, grateful for the space Maximus was giving him, but as the meeting dragged on, his patience wore thinner. Every moment spent discussing territorial disputes and patrols felt like wasted time. The bond was pulling at him, tugging harder with every passing second. He needed to find her. The realization settled over him like a weight, and he could no longer ignore it. He had tried to focus on his duties, had tried to put the kingdom first, but the bond wasn’t going to let him do that. Not now. Not when it was this strong. As the meeting came to a close, Stephan stood, his decision made. He couldn’t keep running from the bond. He couldn’t keep pretending that it didn’t exist. If he didn’t confront it—if he didn’t confront her—he would never be able to focus on anything else. “Maximus,” Stephan called as the advisors began to leave the room. His Beta turned, his expression curious. “What is it?” “I’m leaving for a few days,” Stephan said, his voice firm. “I need to take care of something.” Maximus raised an eyebrow. “Something important?” Stephan nodded. “Very important.” Maximus didn’t ask any more questions, but the look in his eyes told Stephan that he was beginning to understand. Maximus had known him for too long not to notice the change, the way Stephan had been acting since the ball. And though Stephan hadn’t said it outright, Maximus had probably figured out that this had to do with the mate bond. “I’ll handle things here while you’re gone,” Maximus said, his tone calm but serious. “Take as much time as you need.” Stephan nodded, grateful for his Beta’s support. “Thank you.” As Maximus left the room, Stephan stood in the silence, the weight of his decision settling over him. He had put it off for long enough. It was time to face the bond, to find Marina, and to figure out what came next. He couldn’t run from it any longer.
