Chapter 3 Marina

1361 Words
Marina stumbled through the front door of the small cottage she called home, her muscles aching from the intensity of her first shift. Every part of her felt alive, humming with the energy of her transformation, but it left her exhausted. She had done it. She had shifted. She was finally a wolf. But the day wasn’t over yet. “Marina, is that you?” Gavan’s voice rang out from upstairs. His footsteps thundered down the stairs before she could even respond. “You’re back!” “Yeah, I’m here,” she said, smiling as he barreled into her, his arms wrapping tightly around her waist. Gavan had always been the most protective of the orphans she looked after, even though he was just twelve. “You’re going to knock me over one of these days.” Gavan grinned up at her. “You’re a wolf now! You’re way too strong to fall over.” “I guess we’ll see about that,” she teased, ruffling his hair. “It feels... strange. Like I’m still adjusting.” Before Gavan could ask more questions, Abigail appeared at the top of the stairs, beaming with excitement. “We have something for you!” Marina raised an eyebrow, her curiosity piqued. “What do you mean?” “Come on!” Gavan tugged her toward the living room. “You have to close your eyes, though.” Marina chuckled but obliged, covering her eyes as Gavan pulled her across the room. She could hear the sound of shuffling feet and whispered giggles. After a moment, Gavan said, “Okay, you can open them now!” When Marina opened her eyes, her breath caught in her throat. Standing before her was Abigail, holding a gown more beautiful than anything Marina had ever seen. It was deep midnight blue, with delicate embroidery along the bodice and a flowing skirt that shimmered like the night sky. James held a matching mask in his small hands, and little Carolyn twirled with a borrowed tiara perched on her head. Marina’s throat tightened as she took in the sight. “Where did you get this?” Abigail smiled sheepishly. “We borrowed it. We’ll return it before anyone notices. We wanted you to go to the ball, Marina. You deserve to go.” Tears stung at the corners of Marina’s eyes, and she quickly blinked them away. “You... did this for me?” “Of course,” Gavan said proudly. “You take care of us all the time. It’s your turn to have something nice.” Marina reached out to touch the gown, her fingers brushing over the silky fabric. It was stunning, and it felt like a dream—a dream she never thought she could have. The thought of attending the masquerade had seemed impossible, especially after Karen’s threat, but now, with the gown in her hands and the children’s hopeful faces staring back at her, the idea didn’t seem so far-fetched. “You should go,” Abigail said softly. “Maybe you’ll even meet your mate.” Marina’s heart squeezed. She had never dared to dream of finding her mate, not with the way her life had been. But standing here, with the dress and the mask, she felt a flicker of hope. “I don’t know what to say,” she whispered, her voice thick with emotion. “Say you’ll go,” Gavan urged, his eyes wide with excitement. Marina looked at the children—the family she had built—and nodded. “I’ll go.” Their cheers filled the room, and for the first time in a long time, Marina felt the weight on her shoulders lift. Tomorrow night, she would step into a world she had never been a part of, and maybe, just maybe, she would find something she hadn’t even known she was looking for. The night of the masquerade arrived far sooner than Marina expected, and as she stood at the edge of the royal estate, her heart pounded in her chest. The towering gates and grand stone mansion seemed to shimmer in the moonlight, its windows glowing with warmth and light. Elegantly dressed wolves passed by her, their laughter and conversation floating on the cool night air. Marina’s fingers tightened around the mask in her hands, the weight of the moment pressing down on her. She didn’t belong here. Not among wolves who radiated wealth, power, and confidence. Her dress—beautiful as it was—felt borrowed, her presence an intrusion. But she was here now, and there was no turning back. She took a deep breath and slid the mask over her face, adjusting it carefully before she stepped toward the entrance. The cool night breeze soothed her nerves as she walked up the steps, her heart pounding harder with each step. The music spilling from the mansion grew louder, and before she knew it, she was stepping through the grand doors into a world she had never known. The ballroom was nothing short of breathtaking. Golden chandeliers cast a warm glow over the marble floors, where wolves twirled and danced in intricate, beautiful gowns and suits. Masks of all shapes and sizes adorned their faces, adding an air of mystery to the already magical atmosphere. The air was thick with the scent of perfumes, colognes, and something else—something wild and untamed that made her pulse quicken. Marina kept to the edges of the room, her eyes wide as she took it all in. She had never seen such beauty, such elegance. It was overwhelming, and yet, she couldn’t help but feel a small thrill of excitement at being here, among them, even if just for one night. But just as she began to relax, something changed. A strange, almost electric sensation rippled through her, starting deep in her chest and spreading outward like a wildfire. Her breath caught, her heart skipping a beat as the air around her seemed to shift. It was as if the entire room had fallen away, leaving only her and— Her eyes locked onto him. At the far end of the ballroom stood a man, tall and imposing, his presence commanding the space around him. His broad shoulders were draped in a tailored suit that fit him perfectly, his mask only adding to the air of mystery that clung to him. But it wasn’t his appearance that had her rooted to the spot—it was the way the air seemed to crackle with energy between them. The way her entire body seemed to hum with recognition. Her wolf stirred inside her, pushing at the edges of her consciousness. Mate. Marina’s breath hitched. Mate? How could that be? She didn’t even know who he was. But the pull was undeniable, a force that drew her toward him with every heartbeat. She wanted to look away, to break the connection and slip back into the safety of the crowd, but she couldn’t. She was drawn to him, her body reacting to a bond she hadn’t known existed. Her hands trembled as the weight of it pressed down on her, and yet, there was something exhilarating about it. Something that made her want to step forward, to see if the pull was real. And then, he moved. Slowly, deliberately, he began to walk toward her, his golden eyes never leaving hers. Every step he took sent another jolt of electricity through her, until the space between them felt charged with energy. Her heart pounded in her chest, her breath coming faster as he closed the distance between them. The room around them faded, the music and laughter becoming nothing more than background noise. It was just him. Just the way their gazes locked, the way the air around them seemed to hum with an invisible force. And then, just as he reached her, the world seemed to stop. Marina’s breath caught in her throat as they stood there, mere inches apart, their gazes still locked. She didn’t know his name, didn’t know who he was—but somehow, deep in her soul, she knew. He was her mate.
