Chapter Two

The blaring alarm jolted me awake, and I shot up from the bed, my heart pounding. I grabbed my phone, it was 7:15 a.m. Damn it. I was supposed to wake up earlier. With a groggy sigh, I swung my legs off the bed and rushed to the bathroom. A cold shower helped shake off some of my exhaustion, but the moment I stepped out, reality hit me like a truck. I hadn’t picked out an outfit. Cursing under my breath, I yanked open my suitcase, rummaging through the neatly folded clothes. I had brought mostly casual dresses, jeans, and sweaters–comfortable, practical, but definitely not corporate. WB Motors was a high-end company. Their employees probably wore designer suits, pencil skirts, and stiletto heels. My wardrobe? A far cry from that. I held up a simple peach blouse and black slacks, assessing them with a critical eye. They weren’t stylish, but at least they were clean and professional enough. I threw them on quickly, brushing my fingers through my damp hair before tying it into a ponytail. “Once I get my first paycheck, I’ll buy proper work clothes,” I promised myself, grabbing my bag. “Hopefully, they don’t judge me too harshly for this.” But what if they did? What if my appearance disqualified me before I even had the chance to prove myself? I shook the thought away and grabbed my keys. Overthinking wouldn’t help, I just had to get through today. The cab ride to WB Motors felt like an eternity, even though I kept checking the time every few seconds. By the time I reached the towering glass building, it was 7:55 a.m. My stomach twisted into knots as I sprinted through the lobby, my heels clicking against the marble floor. Five minutes early. Not late, but… The receptionist barely glanced at me before directing me to the HR office on the tenth floor. I hurried into the elevator, adjusting my blouse and straightening my shoulders. I stepped into the HR office at exactly 7:58 a.m., just as the woman sitting behind the sleek white desk glanced at the clock. She was tall, pretty with sharp features and a navy-blue suit, her blond hair pulled into a severe bun. Her piercing eyes settled on me, and I swallowed. “What a good way to start your job, Miss Brooks.” Her voice was clipped, unimpressed. I took a breath, steadying myself. “I apologize, ma’am. I made sure to be here on time.” She arched an eyebrow. “Two minutes early is not on time. It means you almost failed to arrive when expected. That is unacceptable at WB Motors.” I clenched my hands at my sides, forcing myself to nod. “Understood. I’ll make sure it doesn’t happen again.” She studied me for a long moment, eyes flickering over my attire. I could feel the unspoken criticism in her gaze, but she didn’t voice it. Instead, she sighed and stood. “Follow me.” I exhaled, relieved she wasn’t sending me home. I followed her through the pristine hallway, the sound of our footsteps echoing against the polished floors. When we reached the executive floor, the atmosphere shifted. The space was sleek and modern, with floor-to-ceiling windows offering a stunning view of the city. The HR woman stopped in front of an imposing silver door, knocking once before pushing it open. “Mr. Spencer,” she said, stepping aside. “Your new assistant, Miss Brooks, has arrived.” I took a deep breath and stepped forward. And then I saw him. Blake Spencer sat behind a massive desk, his gaze fixed on a document on his computer. He looked every bit as intimidating as the articles had described–sharp jawline, piercing emerald eyes, and an air of power that seemed to radiate off him. But the moment his gaze lifted to me, everything changed. His body went rigid, his fingers tightening around the edges on the table. His expression, once indifferent, darkened with something I couldn’t quite place. Shock? Anger? Something else entirely? I hesitated, my stomach churning. Had I done something wrong already? Maybe he disapproves of my dress? Blake’s lips parted slightly, as if he were about to say something, but he quickly shut them. His eyes didn’t leave mine, his grip on the table tightening so much so that I was afraid it’ll crack or he might hurt his hands. For a long, suffocating moment, no one spoke. Then, just as I opened my mouth to introduce myself, he murmured, almost too quietly– “Jade?” I blinked in confusion. Who? But before I could react, his expression hardened, his jaw clenching. “Get her out of my office,” he said, his voice cold, his eyes locked onto mine. My breath caught. What? “S-sir?” I stammered, unable to hide the shock in my voice. Blake’s piercing gaze snapped to the HR manager, his jaw tightening. “I said get her out of my office.” The woman beside me stiffened. “Mr. Spencer… is there a problem? Miss Brooks is your new personal assistant. You requested for one, remember? Blake’s fingers curled into fists on the desk. “Find someone else.” I inhaled sharply. Was I already losing my job? Before I even had the chance to prove myself? The HR manager, looking equally bewildered, glanced at me before turning back to him. “If it’s about her outfit, I can speak with her about the company’s dress code and–” “Enough. Leave us.” His voice sliced through the air like a blade. Silence. The woman’s mouth opened, then closed, as if struggling to comprehend his hostility. “Are you deaf, Rebecca? I said, leave,” Blake growled. The HR manager nodded stiffly. “Of course, Mr. Spencer.” With one last confused glance at me, Rebecca turned and left, shutting the door behind her. Now it was just the two of us. The silence was suffocating, making me squirm where I stood. My throat tightened and a chill ran down my spine as Blake pushed back his chair and stood. I swallowed hard. He was tall–so much taller than I had imagined, and the sheer intensity in his emerald-green eyes sent an uneasy shiver through me. His eyes were blazing with an emotion I couldn’t decipher. Anger? Resentment? Hatred? He took a step forward. each step deliberate, each movement radiating barely restrained fury. Instinctively, I stepped back, my heart hammering against my ribs. Another step. I moved again. It wasn’t until my back hit the cold surface of the office wall that I realized there was nowhere left to go. I sucked in a sharp breath. Blake’s hands came up, palms flat against the wall on either side of me, caging me in. His presence was suffocating, his energy overwhelming. “What the hell are you doing here?” His voice was low, deadly. My pulse pounded against my ribs. “I–I work here,” I managed to say. “Don’t play games with me, Jade.” His breath was warm against my skin, his eyes burning with fury and something else–something darker. I shook my head quickly, confusion swirling in my mind. “I… Sir, I’m not Jade. My name is Avery. Avery Brooks.” Blake let out a bitter laugh. “You really think I’m that stupid?” I blinked up at him, utterly lost. “I… I don’t know what you’re talking about.” His jaw clenched, muscles tightening beneath his sharp cheekbones. “So that’s the game now?” He scoffed. “You disappear for six years, and suddenly, you’re a different person?” My stomach twisted. “Six years? What–?” His fist slammed against the wall beside my head. I flinched, a gasp escaping me. “Stop lying!” he barked. “We dated. We were together until you decided I wasn’t rich enough for you and ran off with your rich boyfriend. You threw everything we had away and acted like I never existed.” His eyes darkened. “And now, after all these years, you’re back–pretending you don’t know me? You think you can sneak back into my life, into my company, just because I have money now?” Panic swelled in my chest, but I forced myself to stand my ground. “I don’t know who you think I am, but I swear to you, I have never met you before today. We never had a past.” His nostrils flared, disbelief clear on his face. “You expect me to believe that?” “It’s the truth! You have the wrong person. I never dated you–I don’t even know you!” I insisted. For a moment, he just stared at me, his jaw clenching, his breathing heavy. He studied me for a moment, as if searching for any trace of deception. But there was none.
