# CHAPTER NINE
The private booking arrived at eight fifty-three.
I knew it was a private booking the moment they walked in — two men, suits, the particular quality of people who moved through spaces like they had been briefed on them in advance. No reservation in my book. No name at the door. Just the expectation of being received without friction.
Nancy wasn't answering.
I had called her extension twice in the thirty seconds between them walking in and me making a decision. No answer. The men were standing at the console looking at me with the patient impatience of people who were used to waiting for nothing.
I made the call.
"Good evening," I said. "If you'll follow me."
I took them to the east wing myself.
I settled them, told them someone would be with them shortly, and went back to the console. Called Nancy again. This time she picked up on the first ring.
"The private booking is seated in the east wing," I said. "I couldn't reach you."
A pause.
"I'll be there in two minutes," she said. And hung up.
The dining room ran fine for the next hour. I did my job and told myself the Nancy situation was handled and didn't think about it. Then at ten fifteen, when the room was thinning and the evening was winding toward its end, I heard him before I saw him.
"A word."
I turned.
Callan was standing three feet from the console. Not close enough to be aggressive. Close enough to be deliberate. He had come from the direction of the kitchen and he was looking at me with the expression of someone who had decided to say something and had chosen their moment.
"Of course," I said.
"Not here." He turned and walked toward the back of house without checking whether I was following.

The corridor behind the kitchen was nothing like the dining room.
No candlelight, no dark timber, no considered elegance. Functional. Lit properly. The smell of a working kitchen — heat and stock and something sharp underneath. I had never been back here and I was aware of that as I followed him, the awareness of being somewhere I hadn't been shown, somewhere that operated by different rules than the front of house I had spent three weeks learning.
He pushed open a door at the end of the corridor. An office — small, practical, a desk with papers on it, a shelf with binders, a window that looked onto the back of the building. He didn't sit. Stood near the desk with his arms crossed and looked at me.
"The east wing," he said.
"Nancy wasn't available," I said. "I called twice."
"The instruction was specific. You don't handle private bookings."
"I understand that."
"Do you?"
Not aggressive. Not raised. Just even, and weighted, and with something underneath it that I couldn't fully name. It wasn't the tone of a manager correcting a process error. It was something else. Something that said — and I knew I was reading into this, I knew it — *that area is not for you.*
"I handled it because the alternative was two guests standing at the door with no one to receive them," I said. "I understand it wasn't my call to make and I won't make it again."
He looked at me for a moment.
"Good," he said.
He moved to the desk. Picked up a piece of paper, put it down again. The movement of someone who had said the thing they came to say and was now deciding whether there was more.
There was apparently more.
"How long have you been doing this," he said. Not the hostess job — I could tell by how he said it. Something broader.
"Working front of house?"
"Managing people."
I thought about it. "Professionally, three years. In practice, longer."
He looked at me again. That even, comprehensive attention that I had stopped trying to interpret and had started simply receiving.
"The Aldrens," he said.
"Last Saturday."
"You gave them twelve."
"Twelve was better than sixteen anyway," I said. "The draught from the entrance doesn't reach twelve."
Something shifted in his face. Not quite a smile. The suggestion of one, maybe, in the slight change around the eyes, gone before it arrived.
"Don't go into the east wing again," he said.
Not *please.* Not *I'd appreciate it if.* Just the sentence, flat and final, with that thing underneath it again that sat in the room after he said it.
"Understood," I said.
He nodded once. The conversation, apparently, was over.
I turned to go.
"Scarlet."
I stopped. Turned back.
He was looking at the desk.
"The table four situation on Thursday," he said. "Hendricks mentioned it. The medical."
"It needed to be handled quickly."
"It was." He picked up the paper again. "That's all."
I went back through the corridor and into the kitchen — briefly, unavoidably, the heat and noise of it hitting me as I passed through — and back out into the dining room.
On my way through the kitchen I passed a man I had never seen before.
He was standing near the far wall, away from the stations, away from the movement of service. Dark clothing, not whites. He looked at me the way people looked at you when they were trying not to look at you, which was a very specific kind of look that I had learned to recognise and which I logged immediately and said nothing about.
I went back to the console.
Twelve minutes later Renner walked through the front door.
He didn't look at me. Went straight to the east wing like he knew exactly where he was going, which he did, because the last time I checked the east wing required someone to take you there and tonight no one had.
I stood at the console.
*Filed*, I told myself.
*Filed* and *not my business* and *don't go into the east wing again.*
I closed the reservation book and finished the evening and went home.

The Deveraux contract ended on Wednesday.
Her assistant sent the confirmation at eleven in the morning — final section approved, no further queries, the legal team had signed off. A clean close. I sat at my desk and read the email twice and felt the particular satisfaction of a long piece of work reaching its proper end.
Six weeks. Three languages across two. I sent a brief professional reply, closed the file, and sat back.
The NGO project was ongoing. Two smaller contracts in the queue. The work was fine. The work was always fine.
I made coffee and looked out at Morvaine and thought, not for the first time, that the translation work and the Oswald's evenings had started to exist in my head as two separate compartments that I moved between without much friction. The translation work was mine entirely — my pace, my space, my terms. Oswald's was something else. Something that ran on different rules that I was still, three weeks in, learning the shape of.
I thought about the corridor. The office. *Don't go into the east wing again.*
I thought about the man near the wall in the kitchen who had tried not to look at me.
I thought about Renner walking straight to the east wing without being escorted.
I drank my coffee.
My phone buzzed.
Bree.
*Are you doing anything Saturday night*
I looked at the message. Saturday was my night off. I had been planning to finish the preliminary reading for the new NGO assignment and order food and watch something on television and call it a reasonable evening.
*No*, I sent. *Why.*
*There's a place. Harlow. Opens at ten. Come.*
I knew Harlow. Everyone in Morvaine knew Harlow — the kind of bar that had been there long enough to stop trying to be anything other than exactly what it was, which was loud and well-stocked and full of people who had decided the night was going to be worth something. I had not been there in two years. Possibly three.
*It's been a long week*, I sent.
*It's been a long week*, she sent back. *That's why.*
I looked at the message for a moment.
I did not have a lot of friends. This was not a complaint — it was simply a fact about the shape of my life, which was built around work and my own company and a small number of people I trusted, of whom Bree was one. I did not go out much. I had stopped going out much somewhere in the second year of building the translation practice, when the work had required most of me and I had given it most of me without particularly minding.
But the Deveraux contract was done. The week had been long. And Bree had asked, which she didn't always.
*Fine*, I sent. *Ten o'clock.*
Three seconds later: *Wear something that isn't work.*
I looked down at what I was wearing, which was, in fairness, essentially work.

Harlow on a Saturday night was everything I had remembered and slightly more.
The kind of place that was dark in the specific way of somewhere that understood that people came here to be seen and not seen simultaneously — low lighting, booths along the walls, a bar that ran the length of the room and was operated by people who knew what they were doing. The music was pitched at the exact volume where you could still have a conversation if you leaned slightly and chose your words.
Bree was already there when I arrived. She had taken a booth near the back — good choice, enough distance from the speakers to talk, enough visibility to watch the room. She was wearing something dark and simple and she looked, as Bree always looked, like she had not tried very hard and had arrived anyway at exactly the right thing.
"You came," she said.
"I said I would."
"You say a lot of things."
I sat down. A server appeared and I ordered something and Bree already had something and we settled into the booth the way we settled into things — easily, without performance.
"How was the week," she said.
"Deveraux closed."
"Finally."
"Finally," I agreed.
"And Oswald's?"
I picked up my drink. "Fine."
Bree looked at me.
"What happened," she said.
"Nothing happened."
"Zia."
"He called me into the back of house," I said. "About the private booking situation."
Bree was quiet for a moment. "And?"
"And it was a professional correction. I was told not to handle private bookings and I handled one. He said don't do it again. I said understood." I paused. "That was it."
"Was it."
"Yes."
Bree sipped her drink and looked at me with the quiet directness she had always had and said nothing, which was sometimes more than saying something.
"It was fine," I said.
"Okay," she said.
We talked about other things. The green linen project she was finishing. A client of hers who had changed the brief three times. Whether the bar had changed its gin selection since the last time we were here, which we couldn't agree on because neither of us could fully remember the last time we were here.
It was good. It was easy. I had forgotten, slightly, that evenings like this were possible — just sitting somewhere that wasn't my apartment or a boardroom or a restaurant console, with someone who required nothing of me except to be present.
At some point Bree went to the bar.
I sat in the booth and looked at the room. The particular cross-section of Morvaine on a Saturday night — groups of people leaning into each other over tables, the bar three-deep with people waiting, the particular energy of a city deciding the week was over and acting accordingly.
I was looking at nothing in particular.
And then, out of the corner of my eye, at the far end of the bar —
I almost didn't clock it. The room was full, the light was low, and I wasn't looking for anything.
But I had spent three weeks learning to read a room and my eyes moved to him before my mind caught up with what they were doing.
He was at the end of the bar. Not performing being there — just there, the way he was everywhere, like the space had accommodated him before he arrived. Dark clothing. A drink he wasn't paying much attention to. He was talking to someone beside him, a man I didn't recognise, low and even in the way he talked to everyone.
He hadn't seen me.
I looked away.
Bree came back with two drinks and slid into the booth and said something about the gin selection being definitively different and I agreed with her and we kept talking and I did not look back toward the end of the bar.
Not once.
I was almost sure of it.
