Inspector Emery held up PC Jack Hobsons’ report on his visit to Tetney Hall.
‘PC Hobson, you state here that there were no indications that the property had been visited or occupied. Is that correct?’
‘Yes, sir.’ What else could he say?
‘You visited every part of the house, every room; is that correct?’
‘Yes, sir.’
‘Did you enter the outhouse? Did you look into the garages?’
‘What the f**k is going on here?’ Hobson thought with a sinking feeling in his stomach. He could hardly deny his report, even though he had not inspected either the basement or the outbuildings, as claimed.
‘Did you thoroughly inspect the grounds, as instructed?’
‘Yes, sir, of course,’ he stated with feigned indignation.
