Sgt Carol Tombohm had been added to the CID team investigating the disappearance of PC Jack Hobson. She had partnered Hobson for some time and both officers had disliked the situation. Hobson, although less experienced than Carol, had thought that he should be the senior of the pairing and complained that she was holding him back by not allowing him to be the main driver, even though she was trained to a higher degree. He was totally resentful towards her and took his complaint to Inspector Jim Emery, hoping that a Masonic connection—they both belonged to the same lodge—would be sufficient for him to be promoted over her, only to be slapped down in no uncertain terms.
