The West Garside Canal ran through a series of locks from its junction to the northwest with the Huddersfield Narrow Canal, to a southerly junction with the Sheffield and South Yorkshire Navigation Canal at Rotherham, which then continued through three further locks to the terminal in Sheffield’s Victoria Docks. The canal was popular with narrow boat owners since it allowed ready access to the Leeds and Liverpool Canals, the Peak Forest Canal, and allowed further exploration of the extensive canal system to the west of the country, as well as access to canals running either to the south or the east of the town. As well as providing pleasurable holiday experiences, the canal was also a ready dumping site for all manner of rubbish, discarded bicycles, supermarket trolleys, bottles and cans
