Chapter 7

JEMMA’S POV “Girl, tell me everything,” I exclaimed, jumping onto Megan’s bed with a bounce. The mattress creaked under my weight as I settled in, eager to hear her secrets. Megan giggled softly and lay back on her bed, her eyes closing as she let out a long, exhausted sigh. After a moment, she rolled onto her side, her face turned toward me, eyes still closed but her voice trembling slightly. “Jemma,” she whispered, “you can’t tell anyone.” I sat up straighter, my heart pounding. “Promise,” I said urgently, crossing my fingers for emphasis. She took a deep breath before continuing. She told me she’s been dating Victor for two years. My eyes widened. “But he has a girlfriend,” I pointed out, confused and a little angry. “Why would he do that?” Megan’s voice was quiet but serious. “It’s all for show, like, they were just pretending to be together or whatever. But now, their parents are trying to arrange their marriage.” I gasped, my mind racing. Megan nodded, her face tense. “No one really knows yet, but it’s coming. And Victor isn’t going through with it. He’s been trying to find a way out.” I felt a strange mix of relief and worry. Megan had been acting strange lately, and now I understood why. She was caught between family expectations and her own feelings. “Does he want to tell his parents the truth? That he doesn’t want to marry her” I asked softly. Megan shook her head. “I don’t think so. He’s scared. But I think he’s planning to run away, or at least try to stop this from happening.” We sat in silence for a moment, the weight of the secrets hanging heavy in the air. I pouted, feeling a mix of frustration and shock, and before I knew it, I reached out and playfully slapped Megan on the arm. “Ouch!” she yelped, rubbing her arm and glaring at me. “What was that for?” “How could you not tell me?” I exclaimed, my voice trembling with a mix of hurt and anger. “Your best friend? I tell you everything!” Megan sighed deeply, her eyes filled with regret. “Jemma, I wanted to tell you so many times,” she admitted softly. “But I couldn’t. I couldn’t risk it getting out.” I looked at her, confused and hurt. “Why? Because it’s forbidden?” She nodded slowly, her voice barely above a whisper. “Yeah. It’s forbidden. If anyone finds out, it could get really bad for us.” The weight of her words sank in, and I realized how dangerous and complicated everything was becoming. Megan had kept this secret for so long, and now, I could see how much it was tearing her apart. But I also knew one thing for sure: I wasn’t going to let her face this alone. Whatever secrets came next, we’d face them together. After a long silence, I broke the quiet with a whisper. “Megan, what are you going to do when you find your mate?” She hesitated before answering, her voice soft. “I’ve been thinking of rejecting him,” she admitted quietly. I looked at her, my brow furrowing. “I know we’re always told how strong the mate bond is,” I said softly, “but you have no idea. You’d have to experience it yourself.” She turned her gaze to me, silent, eyes unblinking. I continued, my voice gentle but serious. “It’s an indescribable pull. It’s like you finally find a piece of yourself you didn’t even know was missing.” Megan was now staring at me, her expression unreadable, her silence stretching out like a long, dark shadow. I knew she was processing everything I’d said. “My point is” I continued “rejecting your mate and walking away… may not be as easy as you think.” Without a word, Megan grunted softly and suddenly buried her face in the pillow, her shoulders tense. She was silent, lost in her thoughts, the weight of her decision heavy in the room. To lighten the mood, I reached over and gently pulled Megan up, a mischievous grin spreading across my face. “Have you guys done it yet?” I asked, winking. She burst out laughing. “No, not yet,” she replied, giggling. I leaned in closer, my curiosity piqued. “Well, what’s being with a vampire like? Doesn’t he feel all cold and wet?” Megan’s eyes sparkled with amusement as she shook her head, still laughing. “Not really,” she said. “I’m warm-blooded, he’s not. It’s like he keeps me cool, even when it’s hot outside,” she added with a grin that looked like a Cheshire cat’s. We both burst into giggles, the tension from earlier melting away for a moment. For now, we could just be silly and enjoy the little secrets we shared….because sometimes, laughter was the best way to face the strange, mysterious world we were tangled up in. “Enough about me,” Megan said with a teasing smile. “How are things with Mr. Sexy 8-Pack, Alec?” she grinned mischievously. I giggled, unable to hide my amusement. “Girl, don’t even get me started,” I said dramatically. “I feel like I’m already in love.” I dropped onto my back, eyes closed, savoring the moment. Suddenly, I shot upright with a burst of excitement. Megan jumped back, startled, then burst into laughter at my sudden movement. “I..” I began, voice trembling with happiness. “We kissed for the first time tonight!” Megan’s eyes widened with a smile. “Aww, that must be so nice,” she said softly, her face lighting up. “Yep,” I nodded nervously, “and he and his parents are coming over for dinner next week. I’m so nervous.” I fidgeted with my hands, feeling a flutter of anxiety. “I hope my parents like him, and more importantly, I hope his parents like me.” Megan looked me straight in the eyes, her expression reassuring. “You have nothing to worry about,” she said softly. “They’re going to love you just like I do.” Her words made me feel a little calmer, a little braver. Without thinking, I reached out and hugged her tightly, feeling the warmth of her friendship envelop me.
