“Strip,” I said, looking straight at Phoenix.
“What?!”
“No time to explain things but you are compromised.”
“Well, at least turnaround,” she said, still not believing her trust in me but doing what I demanded anyway.
She was moving too slowly for me. I turned around and ripped her shirt right off in one whiff, her pants shortly following. She stood there in her lace panties and bra. Shocked out of words.
I blinked twice before reaching for her bra.
“Hold up dude, this ain't that kind of party.”
“Oh my god, Phoenix, we don’t have time for this, you have a tracker on you somewhere and I have to find it.”
“Well, since you put it that way,” she said, still not letting me touch her as she removed her own bra and panties. Phoenix wasn’t shy about her body at all and let me take my viewing fill. I found the bathroom as quickly as I could and a robe to cover her luscious body.
“Now what?” she said, taking a seat on the sofa and watching me search her clothing for a bug.
“Got it!” I said, destroying it and her bra along with it using my fire breath!
“Hey! Now what am I going to wear?” she asked me when I finally decided to turn the lights on, putting Phoenix in full view, both of us unanimously aware of her nakedness underneath the robe.
“Um, there are clothes in the first bedroom there.” I pointed her in the right direction as she went to search through a full closet of choices.
None of the clothes were near decent to wear but she made the best of the situation and opted for thigh-length jeans, skirt leg warmers, a pair of mid-leg leather boots, a turtle neck, and a pull-over sweater. Completely old school, but it would have to do.
I knocked on the door to check on Phoenix. She sat on the bed exhausted and afraid, but damn if she dared show it. I had gotten a grasp of Phoenix's personality by now. She was feigning strength even when everything around her had fallen apart. Phoenix needed her light the most at that moment.
“You’re dimming.” was all I said.
“What’s that?”
“Let me show you,” I said, sitting next to her on the bed.
“ What are you doing?”
“Reviving you,” I said, before letting my fire surround her. Her emotions were all over the place. I could feel that she felt weird but fascinated that it did not burn. I made sure her exhaustion faded away, slowly replacing it with warmth, its energy seeping into her. Drawing me even closer to her. Something about Phoenix just kept me falling and wanting to protect her even more, let alone claim her as mine.
“What the hell,” I said just before I kissed her. The world spun with images, some familiar, some distant like we were waking from a dream. Her lips were heaven and hot like hell. My body responded like I was right where I needed to be. Tonight we would rest in safety away from them, the memories we never knew we lost had returned and I was steaming mad. Our friends were innocent pawns in their game. To make Phoenix and I return home. We would never be theirs to control Phoenix and my fate had been predestined centuries ago.
I watched Phoenix as she slept. The exchange had taken its toll on her. The light in her shone brightly. Her calm breathing slowly turned into soft melodic snores.
From the beginning, this mission hadn't gone as planned. In all honesty, I liked things this way because it made us unpredictable in our moves.
In my own turmoil about kissing her when I shouldn't have known that, I made the excuse of her needing energy. She was simply irresistible, I had to find a way to distance myself fast before more than a kiss happened.
Focusing on the task at hand, we were safe for now. The wards would hold strong for the next 48 hours. We wouldn't need that long though. Vincent and Tonya should be reaching us soon. After the club was attacked, I was grateful that everyone had made it out safely. Ziege had contacted me and now we had to wait for her to arrive. It was good to have an ally on this mission, but I couldn’t help feeling that I still had missed something. However, given Ziege and I's history, we would keep a close guard equally.
As if on cue, my phone buzzed. Memorizing our new coordinates in memory, I deleted the message. I needed something to do with my hands. The temptation to touch her was too much. Maybe I could find some things to pack. The safe house hadn't been used for some time but was restocked on a monthly basis. Where we were headed now, Phoenix wouldn't like it, but we had no other choice. Our enemies weren't far behind, so going to the place they least expected was where we could keep them safe. The funny thing is, who would keep me safe from falling for her? I knew seeing Tonya and Mariana was important to Phoenix, and they each played a part in the Cree’s cruel game. What that was we had yet to find out, but I knew history had its habit of repeating itself if one never learned the lesson it was trying to teach.
