The silence that followed seemed to stretch into eternity. Sophia's eyes widened in shock. Her lips slightly parted as if words were caught in the whirlwind of emotions. She finally managed to stammer out, "Steven, how… how can you say that? We've only known each other for a short time. How could you be in love with me?"
Steven nodded, understanding the gravity of his confession. "I know it sounds sudden, Sophia, but it's not about the duration. It's about the depth of connection we share. I've had other women since my wife left, but none of them stirred anything within me like you do. It's inexplicable, but it's there."
Sophia's gaze fell to her lap as she processed his words. The weight of the revelation hung in the air, creating a palpable tension between them. After a moment, she looked up, her eyes searching his face for answers.
"But why me?" she asked, her voice a whisper. "Why now? And how can you be so sure about your feelings when everything between us is so new?"
Steven leaned forward, his eyes never leaving hers. "Sophia, life is unpredictable, and love doesn't always adhere to a timeline. As for why you, I can't explain it logically. It's a feeling, an undeniable connection that I can't ignore. And as for being sure, sometimes you know. It's like finding a missing piece of yourself."
Sophia's expression softened, but uncertainty still lingered. "Steven, you're my ex-boyfriend's father. This is… complicated. What about him? What about your son?"
Steven sighed, his gaze turning thoughtful. "Sophia, my relationship with my son is virtually nonexistent. We've drifted apart, and I can't let the remnants of that dictate my own happiness. What we have, or could have, is between us and no one else. It's a chance for both of us to find something genuine."
Sophia's eyes searched his, her hesitation battling with a newfound hope. "I've… I've had feelings for you too, Steven," she confessed, her voice barely audible. He groaned and hid her face between her hands, shaking her head. "But I am not ready to give them a name. This is all so unexpected."
A tender smile played on Steven's lips, and he reached for Sophia's hand, gently squeezing it. He raised them to his lips, placing a soft kiss on her knuckles, "Sophia, life is full of surprises. Sometimes, the unexpected moments are the ones that change everything. I understand if you need time to process this, but I wanted you to know the truth about how I feel."
Sophia met his gaze, her eyes reflecting a mixture of emotions. "I appreciate your honesty. It's a lot to take in." She bit on her lip.
Steven nodded, his eyes darkening as his gaze fixated on her lip, “It is, but what life has taught me is that nothing is random and that everything that happens was meant to be.”
Sophia chuckled, “I wouldn’t peg you as a philosopher.”
Steven pulled her to his side as he settled back on the sofa, “oh? And what did you peg me for?”
“You want the honest truth?” Sophia asked, raising her eyebrow at him. She placed her hand on his chest so that she could push herself a bit to look up at him.
“I am a lover of the truth,” Steven replied, his free hand pushing back some loose curls behind her ear.
Sophia’s face flushed from the look that Steven was giving her. He looked at her as if she was the only thing that he was interested in. Shaking her head, she returned to the conversation at hand, “I thought you were one of those people who believed that every person paves their own destiny.”
Steven nodded, “I believe in that too.”
Sophia made a face, “You can’t believe in destiny and then still believe that you can make your own destiny.”
“Why not?” Steven’s hand sunk into her hair, playing with it as if it were the most interesting thing he had ever seen. “I believe that we are all placed in situations that will determine our destinies, but it is up to us to choose which destiny it is. Do you think it was random that I ran into you the day you broke up with Eric?”
Sophia frowned, trying to concentrate on the conversation but the fingers that were gently massaging her head had her body feeling relaxed. “Wasn’t it?”
Steven shrugged, his eyes moving over her face as though he was trying to inprint her look into his mind, “Could be. God, you are so beautiful!” He whispered, shaking his head. “I am here trying to have a conversation with you about destiny, but all I can think about is how beautiful you are. How right you feel sitting with me right here, like this.”
Sophia could feel her face heating up as a blush overtook it. She groaned and turned her head away, hiding it on his shoulder, “You don’t mean that.”
“Oh, baby, you will find out that I never say what I mean,” Steven replied as he moved her head with gentle fingers. He framed her face with his huge palms, ensuring that she could not look away. “You are beautiful. Your eyes are so expressive; that was what I first noticed about you. Then came this hair,” Steven ran his fingers through the thickness of her hair. “All I wanted to do is have my hands buried in it, as I devour your lips.”
Sophia’s breath got stuck in her throat. She swallowed hard, her tongue moistening her sudden dry lips.
“Don’t do that,” Steven’s voice sent chills down Sophia’s spine, his eyes dark with lust. “Because that makes me want to do that for you.”
Sophia bit on her lip, her eyes moving between Steven’s own lips and his eyes. She wanted this man, she was not going to lie to herself. Was she worried about where all this was going to lead? Absolutely. But there was truth in what he said. There was something between them, something that she never felt with Eric. It was powerful, consuming her whole. There was no way she was going to let this go just because she was worried about what people were going to say. She lowered her face, making up her mind on what she wanted. “So, what is stopping you?” She asked him, her voice so low that she wasn’t sure if he heard her.
Steven’s body stilled. He had not expected her to say that. “Can you say that louder for me, baby?”
Sophia looked up at him, her eyes clear, “I asked what was stopping you.”
Steven’s eyes studied her face, trying to see if there was any hesitation. When he found none, he slowly lowered his head towards hers, giving her ample time to pull away if she wanted.
As their lips met, the kiss began as a delicate exploration, a slow dance of vulnerability. Steven's lips moved against hers with a measured rhythm, savoring the sweetness of the connection that had been revealed. Sophia, her eyes closed, surrendered to the kiss, feeling a sense of wonder wash over her. The atmosphere crackled with an electric charge as the tempo of the kiss intensified. Steven, the leader in this symphony of emotions, began to dominate her lips with a newfound urgency. There was a hunger in the way he pressed into the kiss, a longing that transcended the spoken words. Sophia responded, her hands finding their way to Steven's shoulders, fingers weaving into the fabric of his shirt.
Their breaths mingled in the cool night air, a fusion of desire and excitement. The kiss became a whirlwind of emotions, a passionate exchange that mirrored the uncharted territory of their budding connection. The world around them seemed to fade into the background as they lost themselves in the heat of the moment.
Steven's touch sent shivers down Sophia's spine, and the kiss became a journey into the uncharted territories of their hearts.
As they finally broke away, breathless and flushed, their eyes met in a silent exchange that spoke volumes. The sense of wonder lingered, a lingering glow that illuminated the newfound depths of their connection.
Steven was about to devor her lips once again when his phone started ringing, interrupting them. When he glanced at the name he cursed under his breath. Would they ever catch a break?
