Chapter2

The soft clicking of her heels pierced through the calmness of the top floor. Her strides long and purposeful. It was still fairly early so her clothes were still crisp and neat. Some curly strands had slipped loose from her bun, adding a touch of softness to her professional look. She was the picture of calm and composed. …At least on the outside. Her mind was in turmoil and she was doing her best to keep her heart from relocating to somewhere else…her stomach maybe. Her thoughts drifted to the CEO. He was fair, but tough. Zero tolerance for incompetence and excuses. At least that's what people said. The few times she'd seen him she'd thought he was really handsome. But that didn't matter at the moment. This was the worst time to be called into the CEO's office. Lately, anyone who went in there came out jobless. She'd never been called directly to his office, only seen him a few times during meetings and on TV. She remembered his striking dark eyes and oppressing aura. He was like a dark, mysterious gem, placed at the top of a very high pulpit, away from the reach of commoners. The ladies silently fawned over him, but respected him too much to actually voice out or fuss over it. Some stupid ones still did though. She walked past the executive offices and boardroom, heading the direction she'd been pointed to by the teen-looking receptionist. He looked like a 19 year old, but he was obviously older. He wouldn't get the job if he was that young. Or maybe it was the Harry Potter glasses that gave him the look. If her job survived another day, she'd ask him his age. Girl what? That just sounds creepy. How would she even do that? Just waltzed up to him and be like “Hey, how's it going. You look a bit young you know, care sharing your age?” Yeah. No. She wasn't going to do that. She met the secretary, Hillary, at the executive lounge. Seeing the woman's calm face would've helped on a normal day, but this time it didn't. She pointed to a big imposing door and offered Sera a comforting smile that somehow managed to get her more agitated. But she hid it well. Hillary patted her shoulder, “Good luck”. Sera stared at the dark brown, almost black door and took a deep breath. The silver initials on it, MK glistened under her gaze. Lifting her fist ever so slowly, she knocked softly and waited. The silence wasn't helping her at all. The last thing she needed was time to think and rethink all the possible ways she could lose her job. How she'd drag her exhausted and deflated body home and cry for some hours. Then seek emotional support from her Siamese cat Bailey, which she probably wouldn't even get. Then stay awake thinking of how unfair the world was, and eventually drift off to sleep with a heavy heart and a snotty nose. No! Think positive Sera! She chided herself and lightly shook her head. Taking a deep breath, she raised her hand to knock again, after waiting some seconds without any reply but was halted by a deep voice from inside. “Come in” The room was spacious and well lit. As expected of a CEO's office. The large wooden desk, leather chairs and plush sofa all screamed luxury. The smell of expensive coffee and mint lingered everywhere. The decor was top notch and the different shades of black, grey, white and green colours complimented each other perfectly. Seraphina particularly loved the very dark shade of green used, she loved green in general. There was a large picture of an impressive grey wolf with dark eyes that seemed to stare into the depths of your soul on the wall. But what stood out the most in the room was the man behind the desk. He had his face angled towards his laptop where he tapped away gracefully. He looked every bit the CEO. He had on a sky blue button down shirt and a charcoal black striped tie. Sera couldn't see his pants from where she stood. His charcoal grey blazer hung off the back of his executive chair. His hair looks perfect. How did people do it? Get their hair to obediently sit however they wanted without some stubborn strands wandering off. Seraphina sighed and tucked some stubborn hair strands behind her ear. “Good morning” Mr. Kael’s rich baritone voice penetrated Seraphina's subconscious. “Miss Davis, Miss Riven” he added, finally raising his gorgeous face. Only then did Sera notice the blonde lady standing a distance from her on the left. She was so taken by the surrounding and the gorgeous man before her she hadn't even noticed her. “Good morning Mr. Kael”, the blonde greeted stepping forward. Sera glanced at her. She was dressed in a white satin shirt and navy blue skirt that looked like it might rip any second. How did people breathe in those things? I'd be waddling about like a duck if I wore those. “Good morning sir” Sera greeted, stepping forward too. “Miss Davis, you're a senior analyst, am I right?” he leaned back and folded his muscled arms. “Yes sir” the blonde hurriedly replied, “and the best so far. I can-” “Good” he cut her off, once again turning his attention to his laptop. “I need you to prepare a detailed data analysis for investment opportunities. It should be ready in 4 days” The blonde looked a bit stunned. ‘Y-yes sir” “You can leave” Seraphina felt her anxiety that she'd managed to get under control slowly rise again after the lady shut the door. She gently wiped her sweaty palm on her pants. He didn't fire her, so surely he wouldn't fire me right? …Right?!! “Miss River…human resource generalist right?” “...yes sir” Would it be rude to correct him? He didn't get her name right. “It's Riven actually…not River” She took the bold step. He fixed his gaze on her. Sera swallowed nervously. “Oh” Sera couldn't clearly see his facial expression to tell if he was upset or not. The large floor to ceiling window occupying more than half of the wall behind his desk illuminating the room made it hard to see his face clearly. Maybe she should've just kept shut. She steadied her breathing. “Based on your report, you're pretty good” Sera sighed inwardly. Thank goodness, he doesn't sound upset. “Thank you sir” “I'm currently in need of a personal assistant, and you were recommended” Silence echoed in the room briefly. And slowly, Sera's heart swelled. “I trust you can do the job” “Of course. I'll give it my absolute best” “Good. You'll start tomorrow. Be here by 8:00 am. Don't be late.” “Yes sir” “I hope you live up to your good name”.
