CHAAPTER 9

The thunder of thousands of boots on the frozen river plain shook the air. The Pale Crow’s phalanx moved with terrifying, mechanical precision across the blue-black ice, their iron shields interlocked into an impenetrable wall of steel, their heavy battering rams gliding smoothly on wooden sledges. Behind them, two miles back, Prince Julian’s grand host cheered—a roar of thirty thousand voices convinced that the city's end had finally arrived. Julian’s house lords surged forward in a chaotic, disorganized tide, eager to be the first through the breach to plunder the High Queen’s vaults. On the battlements above the Iron Gate, Valerya stood motionless under the cold silver glare of the full moon. Her blood-red velvet mantle snapped in the rising wind. She watched the mercenary wedge cross the two-mile mark, then the one-mile mark, until the pale, hawkish face of the Pale Crow himself could be seen at the front of the line, his longsword raised toward the sky. "Your Grace!" Vance Thorne growled, his knuckles white around the shaft of his warhammer. "They are entering the arc of the pitch cauldrons!" "Hold," Valerya commanded, her voice smooth, level, and entirely devoid of panic. "They're at two hundred yards!" "Hold, Vance." The mercenary vanguard reached the frozen moat. The Pale Crow stopped thirty paces from the iron-reinforced oak doors of the main gate. He looked up at the high wall, his pale yellow eyes locking onto Valerya’s red-cloaked figure framed by the moonlight. Slowly, deliberately, the mercenary leader lowered his broadsword, driving its tip into the ice between his boots. "Open the gate," Valerya ordered. Thorne stared at her for a fraction of a second, then whirled toward the courtyard below. "RAISE THE PORTCULLIS! OPEN THE IRON GATE!" The massive winches screamed. Chains groaned as the heavy iron portcullis slid upward into stone grooves, and the giant oak doors of the Iron Citadel swung wide for the first time in six weeks. Below in the courtyard, five hundred heavy cavalrymen straightened in their saddles. At their head rode Captain Gareth Thorne, his longsword drawn, his horse stomping the frozen ground. Valerya turned toward the spiral stairs, her iron-shod boots striking the stone steps in rapid, rhythmic beats. She swept into the courtyard, mounting her pale warhorse without assistance. She drew her curved imperial broadsword, the blade gleaming like liquid moonlight. "For the Crown!" Valerya’s voice rang out through the stone courtyard, echoing off the high walls like a clarion call. "FOR THE UNCONQUERED REALM!" "FOR THE QUEEN!" five hundred voices roared back. Valerya dug her heels into her mount's flanks. The horse surged forward, galloping straight through the open archway out onto the open ice, her five hundred heavy horsemen thundering behind her like an avalanche of iron and velvet. Across the moat, Prince Julian’s advancing house lords saw the gate open and the Queen ride out. A wave of confused shouting rippled through their front ranks. "She’s sallying out! She’s mad!" Duke Rados screamed from his saddle half a mile back. "Smash them! Cut her down!" Julian’s cavalry spurred their horses forward into a wild, disorganized charge to intercept her. Then, the Pale Crow made his move. The mercenary leader turned toward his five thousand elite infantry, raising his horn to his lips and blowing three short, piercing blasts that cut through the thunder of horses. "COMPANY!" the Pale Crow roared, his voice carrying across the entire plain. "ABOUT FACE! TARGET THE REAR GUARD! NO QUARTER!" In a single, flawlessly drilled second, five thousand veteran mercenary soldiers pivoted on their heels. The massive wall of iron shields flipped outward. Their long, steel-tipped pikes dropped from an upward angle to point directly at the chest of Prince Julian’s advancing host. The impact was catastrophic. Julian’s forward cavalry, charging blindly behind the mercenaries, slammed straight into a forest of five thousand fixed iron pikes at full gallop. Horses were impaled; riders were hurled from their saddles, crashing onto the hard ice in sickening crunches of armor and bone. "TREASON!" Duke Rados shrieked as his own horse reared back, plunging into the chaos. "THE MERCENARIES HAVE BETRAYED US!" Before Julian’s host could process the shock, Valerya’s five hundred heavy horsemen slammed into their flank like an iron thunderbolt. Valerya rode at the point of the wedge, her blood-red mantle trailing behind her like a plume of fire. She swept her broadsword through the air, shearing through the leather reins of a traitor knight, then parrying a spear thrust with her gauntleted wrist and driving her blade straight through the man's throat. Blood sprayed across the white snow, steaming in the freezing air. Beside her, Gareth Thorne fought like a man possessed, his longsword flashing in lethal arcs, cutting down Rados’s house guards to avenge his weeks of captivity. From the rear, the Pale Crow’s infantry marched forward like an iron wall, crushing Julian’s panicked soldiers between their pikes and the city’s cavalry. The battle on the ice turned into a absolute bloodbath. Julian’s coalition, built entirely on fear, greed, and promises of easy victory, shattered within twenty minutes. The southern lords, seeing their vanguard wiped out and the mercenaries fighting for the Queen, turned their horses and fled into the dark woods, trampling their own foot soldiers in their frantic haste to escape. "HOLD THE LINE!" Prince Julian screamed from his silk-draped command pavilion on the high ridge overlooking the river. He was frantically trying to mount his grey charger, his hands shaking so violently he could barely hold the reins. "REALLY TO MY BANNER! HOLD, YOU COWARDS!" "They won't hold for you, little cousin," a voice echoed through the mist. Julian whirled around, drawing his ornate gold-chased rapier. Through the red haze of battle, Valerya rode up the embankment alone, her horse’s white coat splashed with crimson blood. Behind her stepped the Pale Crow, wiping his gore-stained broadsword on his fur coat, flanked by twenty heavy mercenaries who instantly encircled the pavilion, cutting off all escape. Julian’s personal guards dropped their weapons, throwing themselves onto their knees in the snow. Valerya dismounted slowly, her iron boots crunching on the frozen crust. She walked toward her cousin, her curved broadsword dragging beside her, leaving a thin, red line in the snow. Julian backed away until his shoulders struck the center pole of his silk tent. His face was pale as milk, his lips trembling, his crown lopsided on his dark hair. "Valerya..." Julian choked out, his voice thin and pathetic. "Listen to me... we are blood! Our fathers were brothers! It... it was the lords who pushed me into this! Rados! Malakor! They forced my hand!" Valerya stopped three feet from him. The red blood on her face highlighted the terrifying, unyielding coldness of her dark eyes. "You brought forty thousand men to my home, Julian," Valerya whispered, her voice carrying a terrifying stillness that made the surrounding mercenaries shudder. "You burned my fields. You starved my people. You demanded I take the veil in a nunnery while you sat upon my father’s throne." "I will yield!" Julian wept, dropping his gold rapier into the snow. He fell to his knees, clutching at the hem of her blood-stained red mantle. "I will sign the surrender! I will yield all my lands! I will take the black vows! Just spare my life, Valerya! Mercy!" Valerya looked down at the weeping prince kneeling in the slush at her feet. "You mistook my mercy for weakness once, Julian," she said softly. "I will not allow you to make that mistake twice." She raised her broadsword with both hands. "Valerya, NO—" The blade descended in a clean, blinding arc. Silence fell over the Serpent River as the first rays of dawn broke over the eastern mountains, painting the snow-covered peaks in shades of pale rose and gold. The battle was over. Thousands of Julian’s soldiers lay disarmed and guarded on the ice. The rebel coalition was broken forever. Valerya stood on the high ridge, looking out across the vast, bloody plain. Beside her, Commander Vance Thorne, Lady Alyssa, and the Pale Crow stood in quiet victory. Gareth Thorne walked up the ridge, carrying a velvet-wrapped bundle. He bowed low, offering it to the Queen. Valerya took the heavy iron helmet of the Pretender, turning it over in her hands before handing it to Lady Alyssa. "Mount his crest above the Iron Gate," Valerya commanded, her voice ringing out across the morning calm, clear and invincible. "Let every lord in this continent see what happens when they challenge the Sovereign Crown." The Pale Crow looked at her, a rare, genuine smile of profound respect crossing his scarred face. He dropped to one knee on the blood-stained snow, unbuckling his broadsword and placing it at her boots. "The contract is fulfilled, My Queen," the Pale Crow said softly. "The realm is yours." Valerya sheathed her blade, looking out over her city—the Iron Citadel standing proud, unbroken, and gleaming in the morning light. "The realm was always mine, Captain," Valerya whispered into the rising sun. "And it stands unconquered."
