I'm Not Mad

† Alpha Zachary’s POV † “Take it in.” “You, take it in.” “Come on, it is your turn to take it in.” “He likes your face, why don’t you take it in?” Those were the voices I could hear from inside my chamber. I sat at the table, awaiting my breakfast…not like I wanted to eat, but I had to. If I wanted to stay alive and wait for her… I would wait, for as long as it would take. I would eat and stay alive. Finally, the door opened and two maids walked in, holding my tray of food. They tried to keep their distance as they started serving me. I tried to keep my head down, but their racing hearts were something I could hear loud and clear. I looked at one of their faces, and she was laughing at me. She was laughing at me. Then the one closer to me looked at my face, her teeth open in a mocking laugh. “You’ll remain mateless forever,” she said mockingly. I balled my hand into a fist and tried to stay calm. “You are a failure, and you fail at everything. You couldn’t even protect your own mate, and you’re sitting here acting like you can protect a pack.” “You killed your mate, and then you’re here wallowing in your own pain. You get what you deserve, Alpha Zachary,” the one farther away said. “Alpha? Is he worthy to be called an alpha?” the lady closer to me said. “He should just die and leave the pack. Isn’t that better? He should go meet his dead mate.” Then came thunderous laughter. “He killed her anyway. Heartless alpha, you deserve all the pain.” Then my cupbearer came forward to taste the food. “Very tasteless food,” she said and dropped it. “That is befitting of a useless alpha.” I looked at the three of them insulting me, laughing, mocking me. In a switch, my hand reached for the nearest knife, and for the one closest to me, I drove the knife into her neck. “I am not mad. I am your alpha. You don’t get to laugh at me,” I said, stabbing her continuously as she kept laughing. “Kill me like you killed your mate… that’s what you’re best at doing,” she said, still mocking me until life left her body. The other two had already scurried out, shouting. “The alpha has started again!” Soon, two guards came in, and they stopped when they saw me with the lifeless body of the maid. “Take her out. You all should stop laughing at me,” I said and stood up. “I remain the alpha of this pack, and I am your alpha!” I screamed angrily. Who were they to think that because I was patiently waiting for the return of my mate, they could speak to me anyhow? She said she would come back, and I would believe that forever. I walked back into my inner chamber, having lost my appetite. How much more did I have to kill to let them know that laughing at me was wrong? They didn’t know what I was going through. They had no right to laugh at me. My mother, Flora, and my beta named Xander came in at that moment. Beside them was the ugly-looking medic. He was standing at a fair distance away from me. “Alpha,” they both bowed. I looked away from them and slipped into my bed, pulling the blanket up to me. “Alpha, you promised that you wouldn’t kill the maids anymore,” Flora said, standing at the door. Was that her judging my decision? I turned to her, but her head was still bowed. She wasn’t laughing at me. “They were laughing at me,” I said. “Tell them to stop laughing at me.” “Alpha, nobody was laughing at…” “I am not mad!” I screamed, sitting up in a jerk, and they took steps farther away from me. “They were laughing at me, and I know that,” I said. I wasn't mad, they were seriously laughing at me, they always do. My mother nudged the medic they brought. “Go to him,” she said in a whisper, but I heard it very clearly. The medic didn’t come close. Instead, He even took steps backward. “Your Highness, I cannot attend to the alpha as he is,” he said and looked up at me. He was laughing. Why did they always laugh at me? “Get out! You, get out!” I shouted at the medic, searching for something to throw at him, but there was nothing around. He turned and scurried out of my chamber. My beta didn’t move from the door, but my mother took a step closer. “Zach, you need to come back to your senses,” she started.“The council is planning on dethroning you,” she said. “They cannot dethrone me. I have to wait till Tierra comes back. She doesn’t know where she would find me if I leave.” What was wrong with these people? Did they think I wanted to be their alpha anymore? I just had to stay here because I didn’t want Tierra stressing out, searching for me when she comes back. My mother took a deep breath. “Alpha…come to your senses, she is not coming back.” That did it for me. I pushed everything on my side table away, screaming. “My Tierra is coming back!” † Melissa's POV † “Mel, wake up.” It was my mother hitting me. I turned in my bed, reluctant to wake up, but she tapped me again. “Mel, we got a job for you,” she said, and I jerked up immediately, looking at her. My father was standing with her as they stared at me. They better not be joking with me. “So, my sister in the Silverberk pack found a job for you,” my mother said. Silverberk pack? That was the rival pack of the Drescent pack, my pack. “But it is way farther than the palace,” I said. “Stop mentioning the palace,” my father said. “You will return home every evening. You’ll leave very early. It’s work in the palace, just serve the alpha lunch only,” she said, looking at me. But I didn’t want it. I didn’t like the rival pack based on the rumors I heard of their wicked past alpha, but my mother’s perception had changed since her sister found a mate in their pack. “I am not working in Silverberk,” I said and looked at my father. “I want to work in,” “Don’t mention it,” my father cut in. “Mate, let’s go. She doesn’t know what is wrong with her.” It was obvious they had a discussion over me, but I didn’t like their conclusion. “Fine,” I said as soon as my mother stood up from the side of my bed. “I will work in Silverberk pack,” I said, though deep down, I didn’t want it. With a second thought, I could move out of this pack and find somewhere to stay with Alvin. “That’s great,” my mother said. “You will resume work after the Red Moon Festival.” The festival was about two days away, but my birthday was two days after it. “I will resume work after my birthday,” I said. I should be glad they got me a job, but I didn’t feel the enthusiasm. “I got you a bow for the Red Moon Festival. You will love it,” she said. I wondered why they kept getting me things for the festival even when they knew I wasn’t capable of participating. At least, not yet. “And I’ve been praying to Selena,” my father said. “I pray you shift this year’s festival,” my mother completed his words. “Just live in it, okay? Relax and it will come,” my father pacified, not like I hadn’t heard all those encouraging words for multiple years already. I smiled. They should leave, I wanted to go back to sleep. “Alright, Papa. Don’t you have to go to work?” I asked. “We wanted to meet you before we do.” “You always want the best for me,” I said to grace their ego. “I am grateful you know that,” my father said. “You are all we have, and this Alpha already killed another of his maids again today. We can’t lose you, Mel,” my mother said. “If he’s killing so many people, why haven’t they killed him yet…” “Shush, don’t say that again,” my father cautioned, but I didn’t think I said anything wrong. “He was the best king before he killed his mate, and don’t ask me questions. Rose, let’s get going,” he said. My mother quickly gave me a peck on my face, and then they left my room. He killed his mate and then went crazy… so nice of Selena. I smiled and got out of my bed. My eye caught a reflection that moved sharply in the mirror. It was a lady oozing blue fire. I stood and stared clearly, but then it was just me staring back at myself.
