Mother pulled me into a hug the moment she stepped into the villa.
“You haven’t been coming home to check on your old mother, Lucas,” she said, brushing my cheek with her palm. “How are you, my darling?”
“I’m fine, Mother,” I replied, though my eyes were fixed on the young woman standing quietly beside her. Pretty… almost delicate… and smiling as though she wasn’t standing in a stranger’s house.
“Sorry I haven’t visited,” I added. “Work has kept me busy… and life.” I glanced at the unfamiliar woman again. “You dropped by…is everything alright?”
“Yes, it is,” Mother said. But she exchanged a quick look with the lady before turning back to me. “I want you to meet Veronica… she is your… sister.”
