Chapter 47: Smugglers Tunnel

1045 Words
Inside the cave, a long, narrow cave tunnel stretched deep into darkness. The passage is carved through rough, jagged rock, with uneven walls that curve inward and overhead, forming a natural, almost claustrophobic corridor. The stone surfaces are damp and glistening, catching the light in subtle highlights. Along both sides of the tunnel, iron brackets are mounted at regular intervals. Each holding a flickering flame that cast a warm, orange glow against the cold, dark stone. The light dances across the walls, creating shifting shadows that make the tunnel feel alive and slightly unsettling. The ground is uneven and muddy, with shallow puddles reflecting the torchlight like scattered pools of gold. Small stones and debris are scattered along the path. As the tunnel extends forward, it narrows visually, drawing the eye toward a distant vanishing point where the light fades into near total darkness. After about ten minutes into the cave, Sol reported back. “There is a cavern up ahead with two guards,” he reported quietly. Luz’s amber eyes sharpened at Sol’s report, his military instincts taking over completely. The narrow cave passage forced them into a tighter formation, making silent movement essential. “Leo, you are with me,” he whispered, gesturing for the dagger-wielder to fall into step behind him. “Lua, cover our six with your crossbow.” His boots made almost no sound against the damp stone floor as he crept forward, obsidian blade held low and ready. Reaching the cavern entrance, Luz peered around the corner just enough to confirm Sol’s assessment. The cavern was illuminated by a mix of natural and firelight. The ceiling is crowded with long, jagged stalactites that hang like stone teeth, while thick columns of rock ride from the ground, some joining the celling and the floor in towering formations. From a break high above, pale beams of daylight stream down into the cavern, butting through the dimness and casting soft, ethereal light across the damp, glistening, rocky terrain. These shafts of light illuminate a shallow, crystal-clear pool to the right, its water tinted a faint turquoise and reflecting both the stone formations and the light above. In the foreground, a small campfire burns brightly, its warm orange glow contrasting with the cool tones of the cave. The fire crackles atop a ring of stones, sending flickering light across the ground and nearby rocks. Beside it sits one guard, cloaked and armoured, resting on a low pack. His posture is relaxed but alert, as if keeping watch while taking a moment’s respite. A short distance away stands a second guard, more rigid and vigilant. He faces deeper into the cavern, holding a long spear upright. Near him, a dark banner hangs from a makeshift pole, marked with a faint emblem. “Easy targets,” Leo murmured beside Luz, his daggers already slipping free of their sheaths with barely a whisper of steel. Luz did not respond verbally. Instead, he acted. With predatory grace, he lunger from the shadows, obsidian blade carving a deadly arc through the air. The standing guard crumpled without ever lifting his spear, collapsing bonelessly to the cavern floor. Leo moved simultaneously, a blur of motion striking from the opposite direction. He moves behind the guard seated by the fire and slabbed him from behind before he could even cry out. The entire encounter lasted seconds– two lives extinguished silently by professionals who viewed this as merely clearing obstacles. Luz straightened up, wiping his blade on the dead man’s cloak while scanning the cavern ahead. “Sol, maintain your position at the entrance– watch our backs.” A third guard suddenly came from the tunnel ahead, a crossbow bolt flew across the air, striking the unsuspecting guard between the eyes with lethal precision. The man crumpled forward, his body hitting the cavern floor with a heavy thud that echoed briefly in the enclosed space. Lua lowered her crossbow smoothly, her movements efficient and practiced as she moved forward and retrieved the bolt from the corpse. “Clear ahead,” she announced quietly to Luz, her voice carrying easily in the sudden stillness. Luz’s amber eyes flicked toward her with approval before returning to surveying their surroundings. That cavern opened into a large chamber beyond where more light sources indicated potential patrols or storage areas. “Good shot,” he acknowledged briefly before addressing the rest of his team. “Leo, Cassandra– you are with me checking that main chamber. Sol maintain overwatch here with Lua.” Ahead the vast cavern was clear and looked like a smuggler’s cache. Towering stone formations dominate the space—thick columns rise from the ground to meet jagged stalactites hanging from the ceiling, forming a forest of rock. The surfaces are rough and damp, catching glimmers of light that make the cavern feel alive and ancient. A narrow, glowing turquoise waterway cuts through the left side of the cavern, its surface calm and reflective. Small wooden boats are moored along its edge, suggesting the water is used as a quiet, concealed route in and out of the cavern. The right and central areas are filled with stacks of wooden crates and barrels—some neatly arranged, others piled in clusters. Crates are bound with rope or reinforced with metal corners, giving the impression of valuable or carefully stored goods. The sheer number of them hints at large-scale operations—trade, smuggling, or stockpiling for something bigger. Rough wooden platforms and shelves have been built into the rock walls, rising in tiers like a makeshift warehouse. Ladders and stairs carved into the stone connect different levels, allowing access to higher storage areas. Scattered throughout the cavern are torches and braziers, their flames casting a warm orange glow that contrasts with the cool blue-green tones of the water. The lighting creates deep shadows between the crates and along the walls, adding a sense of secrecy and tension. From above, faint beams of natural light filter down through cracks in the ceiling. Luz stepped into the chamber first, obsidian blade held ready as he scanned the room for threats. His amber eyes catalogued each crate and shadowed corner with military discipline. He noted the ladder leading upward, in the left corner of the cavern.
