Nick’s POV
“A word, Nick.” Leslie knocks at the door of the IT department, causing employers in the IT department to raise their heads simultaneously.
Leslie observes them and silently counts in his mind. Among all, nine-tenth are wearing glasses, and it is a hilarious scene to watch. They look like an army of mutants, because it is universally acknowledged that wolves have good eyesight and they don’t need glasses.
Well, they didn’t need.
The situation changes when they leave the forest to move to cities, where they gradually get accustomed to the human lifestyle and inevitably be addicted to the screens.
While all his colleagues look in Leslie’s direction, Nick who is sitting in front of the computer, however, doesn’t bother to raise his head and answers casually, “If you want to give me a lecture on how-to-treat-your-colleague nice, I’ll pass. I am busy.”
“Busy in what? Enjoying your coffee?”Leslie snarls,
“It is an emergency. Get here or I’ll drag you out myself. ”
“Don’t make a fuss.”Nick reluctantly stands up and goes to the doorway. He closes the door behind him and leans against the wall with his arms across the chest, “What?”
“You don’t have to stand in such a defensive posture. I am not going to attack you.”Leslie pinches his nose.
“I can stand however I want.”
“Alright, suit yourself.” Leslie’s patience is running out. He lets out a sigh and says, “Nick, I know as a member of Moonlight, we can do whatever we want as long as we don’t break the company’s rules. But don’t you think what you did was too improper this time?”
Nick stands straight and answers, “Sorry Leslie, I didn’t know my way of standing would make you feel so uncomfortable. Somehow I feel upset today and I……”
“I am not talking about your way of standing,” Leslie cuts him off, “And you should be upset. Ara got you in the lottery.”
Nick blinks at him, “What?”
“Ara, the intern girl. She got you in the lottery.”Leslie repeats himself word by word.
There is a stretching silence between them and then Nick says, “Your joke sucks.”
“No, that’s not a joke!”Leslie shakes his head.
“But that’s impossible. How could my name be on the client list?”
“Because whoever signed up for our VIP program has a chance to be selected.” Leslie glares at Nick, “Oh come on, don’t pretend that you don’t know. Lisa doubts if you have done some nasty tricks to manipulate the lottery and now she is collecting evidence, preparing to report you.”
“The charge is ridiculous. Lisa is out of her mind. I didn’t do that.”Nick frowns and adds, “Neither did I sign up for any VIP programs held by our company. There must be some technical errors.”
“Whatever you say. But the point is, Ara got you in the lottery.”
“Thank you for reminding me Leslie. You’ve said that three times in the past 2-minute. I fully understand that.”
“You do? I sincerely doubt it.”Leslie snorts, “You don’t do a relationship, which means it will be impossible for Ara to help you chase your perfect match.”
“Perhaps that’s why my name was shoveled in a red ball. Mission Impossible.”Nick shrugs, “It could be the company’s decision. They don’t want Ara to be a member of the company so they give her a red ball with my name on it. They want her to fail the trial.”
“No! The company will never do such things. Even if they want to play some tricks, they would assign Ara a simple mission rather than a tough one.” Leslie lowers his voice, “The girl has a dexterity on predicting the client’s next move and leaders look high upon her…”
Leslie pauses for a while and then warns, “The company wants Ara to stay and the boss wouldn’t be happy if she fails. That is to say, and you’d better be cooperative when Ara helps you find your perfect match, or you would be in trouble.”
Nick rolls his eyes,“Like what? Giving me a 2-hour lecture?”
“Worse than that. They may accuse you of changing the algorithm of the lottery with an evil intention to causes the loss of labor force.”
“They can look into it and they’ll find I am innocent.”
“You’re more naive than innocent.”Leslie informs Nick in a serious tone, “The problem is leaders don’t care about if you’re guilty or not. They want Ara to stay and if you act against their wish, your life in the Moonlight will be miserable. I can assure you that.”
“Is that a threatening?”Nick stutters in disbelief. Now he eventually realizes the seriousness of the issue.
Leslie clears his throat and replies, “Call it a merciful warning.”
“This is unfair.”Nick mutters, “Why must I suffer this?”
“Don’t be so pessimistic.”Leslie claps his shoulder, “ Ara wants to stay in the company, so she will spare no effort to help you get your mate. Perhaps with her assistance, you’re going to find your soul mate in the end.”
“This is time-wasting.” Nick shakes his head and mumbles, “I will never have a mate, let alone finish the mating bond with her . ”
“Why do you say that?”Leslie gives Nick a curious look.
“I’ve been trying to find my mate since I was mature, but I couldn’t find her. My wolf tried to get in touch with my mate’s wolf and his search was fruitless. He has sent out hundreds of messages calling the she-wolf to meet him, yet there was no response from the other side. No acceptance. No rejection. Nothing.”Nick sighs, “My wolf didn’t want to give up. He is quite determined and romantic. I, unlike my wolf, am a realistic person. I know when to stop loss in time.”
It is the first time that Leslie heard Nick talked so many things about himself (even more than what Nick said during the interview). Leslie is too surprised to come up with some comforting speech in a short time. What Leslie can finally say is something simple yet sincere, “I am so sorry about that”.
“No worries. I will be fine.”
Leslie ponders for a while and suggests, “Maybe you can write an email and inform leaders of your situation. If you can prove that you didn’t sign up for the VIP program, they have no right to place your name on the client list. The result of this lottery will be invalid and Ara can have another lottery.”
“Marvelous!”Nick nods in amusement, “Thank you Leslie. I will immediately write an email.”
“No. You shouldn’t do that.”A voice appears behind them.
Leslie realizes it is Nick’s twin sister. He greets her with a smile, “Hello, Mia.”
“Hi.”Mia gives him a shy smile.
“Why do you stand like that?”Nick gives her a suspicious look.
“Like what?”
“ You’re using the door to shield yourself.”
“I can stand however I want.”Mia retorts.
“You sound like your brother.”Leslie let out a hearty laugh.
A thought dawns on Nick and his eyes suddenly widen, “You must have done something horrible so you dare not to come out and confront me. Am I right?”
Mia flinches a little, holding the door and gives Nick an innocent look, “I was trying to help.”
Nick panics and asks, “What did you do? What did you do to me?”Before Mia answers, he already deducts what is going on, “Did you sign up for that stupid VIP program on behalf me?”
“The VIP program is designed by the company. You shouldn’t call it stupid.” Mia grimaces, “Besides, mom is going to retire and our pack needs a Luna. Mom wants that person to be her daughter-in-law yet her son can never find a mate. Shame on him. So here I am, volunteering to help my dear brother to find his mate.”
“You set me up!”
“Don’t yell at her. She is your family.”Leslie tries to stop the fight.
“Family my ass!” Nick gets outraged, “I’m going to kill you.”
“No murder is allowed in the workplace.”Mia waves her hand and closes the door rightly before Nick can drag her out.
“Open the door!”
Mia shakes her head and locks the door.
“Open the f*****g door! Or you’ll be a dead body when I’m in.”
Mia gives her brother a big smile and mouths, “Never.”
