Chapter 3 : 15 Years of Waiting đź’—

1725 Words
The clock struck 2:17 AM. Silence had settled over Kamalaya Mansion like a heavy blanket. The kind of silence that made every thought echo. The only sound was the low, steady hum of the air conditioner. Inaya lay in the center of the massive bed. She wasn’t sleeping. Not really. Her eyes were closed, but her mind was a storm. White silk. That’s what she wore. The fabric felt cold against her skin. Her hair was spread across the pillow, dark and wild. The door opened with the softest click. Rayan stepped inside. He looked nothing like the CEO the world knew. No 3-piece suit. No tie. No mask. Just a black button-down shirt with the top two buttons undone, and dark trousers. His hair was slightly messy. There were shadows under his eyes. Ten — no, _fifteen_ years of them. He stopped just inside the door and watched her. She looked so small in that bed. So fragile. So impossibly far away, even though she was only a few feet from him. He walked forward slowly, like one wrong move would shatter everything. When he reached the bed, he didn’t lie down. He sat. On the very edge. His back to her. For a long time, he didn’t move. Didn’t breathe. Then his hand moved. Slowly. Carefully. He reached out and tucked a strand of hair behind her ear. His fingers barely touched her skin. But it was enough. *"Inaya..."* His voice broke the silence. It was rough. Tired. Full of things he’d never said out loud. *"I’ve been waiting for you. For fifteen years."* Inaya shifted in her sleep. A small sound escaped her lips. Rayan jerked his hand back instantly, guilt flashing across his face. He stood up and walked to the window. Hands in his pockets. Staring at the city lights below. *"When I first walked into your house... you were eleven. Eleven years old. With two messy braids and a notebook bigger than you. You called me 'Rayan Sir' with that serious little face."* He laughed quietly. It wasn’t a happy sound. *"I was twenty-six. Fresh out of my MBA. Your father asked me to tutor you in math. And I thought... it would be easy. An hour, twice a week. In and out."* He turned. Looked at her sleeping form. *"I was wrong. It wasn’t easy. Because even then... even when you were just a kid with scraped knees and ink on your fingers... you looked at me like I was the whole world."* His jaw tightened. *"That’s why the rules. That’s why I made that contract so cold. No closeness. No touching. Separate rooms if you wanted. Because I’m fifteen years older than you, Inaya. Fifteen. What kind of man falls for a child? What kind of man wants to ruin her?"* He pressed his palms against the glass. *"I told myself it was protection. That I was keeping you safe from me. From what I felt. I thought if I kept my distance, the feeling would go away. But it didn’t. It grew. For fifteen years, it grew."* He closed his eyes. *"The debt was a lie. A convenient lie. Your father was in trouble, yes. But I didn’t do it for him. I did it for you. Because I couldn’t watch you suffer anymore. Because I wanted to give you a name that would protect you. My name."* He turned back to the bed. *"So from now on... to the world, I’ll be cruel. Cold. The CEO who doesn’t smile. The husband who doesn’t care. Because if they see how much I want you, they’ll use it against you. And I won’t let that happen. You’re mine to protect."* He exhaled and walked back to the bed. He lay down on his side, leaving a careful distance between them. Staring at the ceiling. The minutes stretched. Then... Inaya’s eyes opened. The room was dark, but she could see him. The outline of his shoulders. The way his chest rose and fell. Her heart was pounding. She could still hear his words. Echoing in her head. _Fifteen years._ Without thinking, she reached out. Her hand found his chest. Right over his heart. It was beating fast. *"Rayan..."* It was barely a whisper. Rayan went completely still. *"Rayan, are you awake?"* He didn’t answer for a second. Then: *"Yes."* Inaya sat up slightly. Tears were already falling. She didn’t bother to wipe them. *"Do you really think I’m too young? Too small for you?"* Rayan turned his head. In the dark, his eyes found hers. *"Inaya—"* *"No. Let me speak."* She sat up fully now, facing him. *"I’ve loved you for fifteen years too."* The words hung in the air. Rayan’s breath caught. *"Since I was eleven. Since the day you walked into my house with that briefcase and those glasses. You were so serious. So focused. And I... I used to practice my math problems three times just so you’d say 'good job'."* A tear slipped down her cheek. *"You thought I didn’t notice. But I did. Every time you looked at me for one second too long. Every time you cleared your throat when I called you 'Sir.' You were running away from me, and I was running toward you."* She reached for his hand. *"You were protecting me. I know. But I’ve been protecting you too. In my heart. For fifteen years. So don’t say I can’t handle you. Don’t say I’m too young."* Rayan stared at her. His expression was unreadable. Then, slowly, he reached out. He grabbed her hand. Not gently. Hard. Like he was afraid she’d disappear. *"Inaya."* And then he pulled her. She gasped as he wrapped his arms around her and pulled her into a hug. A real hug. The first one. His arms were strong, solid, and they didn’t let go. Inaya buried her face in his chest. She could smell him. Cedar and something uniquely _him_. Rayan’s hand came up and cupped the back of her head. *"Fifteen years,"* he murmured into her hair. *"Fifteen years of wanting to do this."* He pulled back just enough to look at her. In the dim light, his eyes were dark and intense. Then he leaned down. And pressed a soft kiss to her forehead. It wasn’t rushed. It wasn’t demanding. It was a promise. *"Listen to me,"* he said, his voice low against her skin. *"Inside this room... I am your husband. Nothing else. Not the CEO. Not the monster they call me. Just Rayan. Your husband."* He pulled back, meeting her eyes. *"And outside this room... I am the man you want revenge from. The man the world fears. The man who will burn everything down to keep you safe."* Inaya’s breath hitched. *"Do you understand?"* She nodded. Tears falling again. Rayan wiped one away with his thumb. *"Good."* He pulled her back into his arms. This time, he didn’t let go. He shifted, lying back down, and brought her with him. She fit against him perfectly. Like she was made to. *"Sleep,"* he whispered. *"Tomorrow is a new beginning."* *"After fifteen years of waiting... tomorrow is ours. Together."* Inaya closed her eyes. For the first time in fifteen years, she felt safe. Rayan held her tighter. *"Goodnight, Mrs. Khan."* *"Goodnight, Rayan Sir,"* she whispered back. And in each other’s arms, they finally slept. The night was over. The waiting was over. In morning.... Sunlight filtered through the heavy curtains of Kamalaya Mansion. Rayan woke first. The room was quiet. Warm. And in his arms... was Inaya. She was still asleep. Curled against his chest, one hand clutching his shirt like she was afraid he’d disappear. Her hair was a mess. Her face was peaceful. Rayan stared at her for a long time. Fifteen years. And she was finally here. He leaned down slowly. Pressed a soft kiss to her forehead. *"Good morning, Mrs. Khan."* Inaya stirred. Her eyes fluttered open. For a second she looked confused. Then she remembered. Last night. Her cheeks turned pink. *"Good... good morning, Rayan Sir."* Rayan smirked. The first real smirk in years. *"Sir? Inside this room, you can call me whatever you want."* He pulled her closer. Hugged her tightly. Like he never wanted to let go. Inaya melted into him. Then he tilted her chin up. And kissed her. It was slow. Soft. A morning kiss. Full of promise and fifteen years of waiting. When he pulled back, Inaya was breathless and blushing furiously. Rayan brushed his thumb over her cheek. Then he leaned in again. This time, his lips were at her ear. *"See you tonight, Mrs. Khan."* Inaya’s entire body flushed. She buried her face in his chest, hiding. Rayan chuckled low. The sound vibrated against her. *"Come on. We have to get ready."* --- *30 Minutes Later* They stood in front of the mirror. Rayan in a perfect black 3-piece suit. Cold. Untouchable. CEO mode: ON. Inaya in a cream formal suit. Hair tied back. Minimal makeup. She looked beautiful. Rayan stepped behind her. His hands reached for her tie. *"You missed a loop,"* he said quietly. His fingers brushed her neck as he fixed it. Inaya shivered. *"Rayan—"* *"Shh."* He finished the tie. Then his hands rested on her shoulders. *"You look perfect."* He met her eyes in the mirror. For one second, the mask slipped. The husband was there. Then it was gone. *"Let’s go. Downstairs."* --- *Dining Hall* The long table was already set. Rayan’s parents. His younger brother. The staff. The moment Rayan and Inaya entered, the room went silent. Rayan didn’t look at Inaya. Inaya didn’t look at Rayan. They sat at opposite ends of the table. *"Good morning,"* Rayan said. His voice was ice. *"Morning,"* Inaya replied. Her voice was equally cold. Not a single glance. Not a single word between them. Rayan’s mother frowned. *"You two... alright?"* Rayan cut his steak. *"Fine. We were just discussing the new project."* Inaya nodded. *"Yes. Work."* The lie was perfect. To the world, they were strangers. To each other... last night was still burning. Rayan sipped his coffee. Under the table, his foot brushed against Inaya’s. Just for a second. Inaya’s breath caught. She didn’t react. The mask stayed on. But both of them were thinking the same thing. _Tonight._
