The days that followed Kieran’s departure were a blur for Elara. She tried to go about her life as usual—painting, sketching, tending to her small garden—but her mind kept wandering back to the silver-eyed stranger who had walked out of her cabin and into the woods. She told herself it was just curiosity, that anyone would be fascinated by what she had seen. But deep down, she knew it was more than that.
There was something about Kieran that had gotten under her skin, something that made her feel restless and unsettled. She found herself sketching him from memory, trying to capture the intensity in his eyes, the sharp angles of his face. But no matter how many times she tried, the drawings never quite did him justice.
Her best friend, Lila, noticed the change in her almost immediately.
“You’ve been weird lately,” Lila said one afternoon as they sat on the porch of Elara’s cabin, sipping tea. “Like, weirder than usual.”
Elara forced a smile, though her heart wasn’t in it. “I’m fine. Just… distracted, I guess.”
Lila raised an eyebrow, clearly unconvinced. “Distracted by what? Or should I say, by *who*?”
Elara’s cheeks flushed, and she looked away, focusing on the steam rising from her teacup. “It’s nothing.”
“Uh-huh.” Lila leaned forward, her eyes narrowing. “Spill it, Elara. You’ve been acting like a lovesick teenager ever since that hike you went on last week. What happened out there?”
Elara hesitated, her mind racing. She wanted to tell Lila the truth, to share the burden of what she had seen. But how could she? Lila would think she was crazy. Hell, *she* thought she was crazy.
“Nothing happened,” she said finally, her voice barely above a whisper. “I just… met someone.”
Lila’s eyes lit up. “A guy? Oh my God, why didn’t you lead with that? What’s his name? What’s he like? Is he hot?”
Elara couldn’t help but laugh, though it came out more as a nervous chuckle. “His name’s Kieran. And yes, he’s… hot.”
“Details, Elara. I need details.”
Elara sighed, setting her teacup down on the porch railing. “He’s… intense. Mysterious. He’s got these silver eyes that just… I don’t know. They’re kind of mesmerizing.”
Lila grinned. “Sounds like you’ve got it bad.”
Elara shook her head, though she couldn’t deny the truth in Lila’s words. “It’s not like that. He’s… complicated. And he made it pretty clear that he doesn’t want anything to do with me.”
Lila’s grin faded, replaced by a look of concern. “What do you mean?”
Elara hesitated, then decided to give Lila a version of the truth—just enough to satisfy her curiosity without revealing too much. “He’s not from around here. He’s… kind of a loner. And he’s got a lot of baggage.”
Lila nodded, her expression softening. “Well, if he’s stupid enough to walk away from you, he’s not worth your time.”
Elara smiled, though it didn’t reach her eyes. “Yeah. You’re probably right.”
But as much as she tried to convince herself that Lila was right, she couldn’t shake the feeling that there was more to Kieran than he was letting on. And despite his warnings, she couldn’t stay away.
That night, Elara found herself drawn back to the woods. She told herself it was just a walk, that she needed to clear her head. But deep down, she knew she was hoping to see him again.
The forest was quiet, the only sounds the rustling of leaves and the occasional hoot of an owl. Elara followed the same path she had taken the day she found Kieran, her heart pounding with every step. She didn’t know what she would do if she saw him again, but she couldn’t stop herself from looking.
She was so focused on scanning the trees that she didn’t notice the figure standing in the shadows until it was too late.
“I told you to stay away.”
Elara jumped, her heart leaping into her throat. Kieran stepped out of the shadows, his silver eyes glowing in the moonlight. He looked even more imposing than she remembered, his broad shoulders silhouetted against the trees.
“I… I wasn’t looking for you,” Elara stammered, though the lie sounded weak even to her own ears.
Kieran raised an eyebrow, clearly unconvinced. “Then what are you doing out here?”
Elara crossed her arms over her chest, trying to steady her racing heart. “I could ask you the same question.”
Kieran’s lips twitched, almost as if he were fighting a smile. “I live here.”
Elara blinked, caught off guard by his response. “You… live in the woods?”
Kieran nodded, his expression serious. “My pack’s territory extends through these woods. We keep to ourselves, but we don’t take kindly to trespassers.”
Elara’s chest tightened at his words. “I didn’t mean to trespass. I just… I needed to clear my head.”
Kieran studied her for a long moment, his silver eyes searching hers. Then he sighed, running a hand through his hair. “You’re not safe out here, Elara. There are things in these woods that you don’t understand.”
Elara’s heart skipped a beat at the sound of her name on his lips. “Then help me understand.”
Kieran’s jaw tightened, and for a moment, she thought he might refuse. But then he nodded, his expression softening. “Fine. But you’re not going to like what you hear.”
Elara’s heart raced as she followed Kieran deeper into the woods, her mind buzzing with questions. She didn’t know what he was going to tell her, but she knew one thing for certain:
her life was about to change forever.
