Chapter 3

Dominic reached to feel my forehead, but I turned away. A faint smear of pink lipstick marked his shirt collar. His hand froze in midair. Only then did he seem to remember what he should have asked first. "What did the doctor say?" "The baby still has a heartbeat. For now." His shoulders visibly relaxed, and his tone turned almost self-righteous. "See? I knew everything was fine. The crash wasn't as serious as you're making it out to be. You've been too anxious ever since you got pregnant. Ivy almost went into shock. I had no choice but to stay with her." "What if I lose the baby?" "But the baby is fine right now, isn't he?" I unlocked my phone and put the video, photos, and lease in front of him. The video played in the silence. Dominic's expression finally changed when he saw the ring on Ivy's finger. "Who sent you this?" "Is that you in the video?" "There's been a misunderstanding." "Did you rent the apartment?" "Ivy had just moved to Westbridge and didn't have anywhere stable to stay. I was only helping her as her employer." He wouldn't meet my eyes. "Sienna, do seven years together really mean less to you than a few anonymous photos?" "And helping her meant sleeping with her?" He didn't answer. He simply reached over and stopped the video. That was the moment I ran out of lies to tell myself. I slowly slipped off my wedding ring and set it on the nightstand. "I want a divorce." "Over this?" He looked at me as though I'd said something insane. "After seven years, you're really going to destroy our family over one mistake?" "I'm not the one who destroyed it." "I left Ivy to come here. What else do you want from me?" His brow furrowed. "She has a heart condition. What was I supposed to do, stand there and watch something happen to her?" "So it was fine if something happened to me and our baby?" Dominic didn't answer. He just said I was emotional and needed some rest. I couldn't stand being in the same room with him, so I threw back the covers and got out of bed. A nurse tried to stop me, but I pulled on my coat and kept going. Dominic caught up with me in the lobby and grabbed my wrist. "Come back with me. Stop making a scene before everyone starts gawking." I turned and slapped him across the face. The c***k of it silenced the lobby for a beat. "You already did something far more humiliating." Dominic covered his cheek and stared at me in disbelief. No matter how badly we'd fought in the past, I had always been the first to give in. He'd probably never imagined I'd be the one to humiliate him in public. "Sienna, what happened to you?" His jaw clenched. "I came to take you home. How long are you going to keep this up?" "I was 19 when I chose you. I lived in that basement with you, helped you build your company, and stayed beside you from nothing to everything you have now." I met his eyes. "But surviving hardship with you doesn't mean I deserve a lifetime of suffering because of you." He faltered. "Dominic, I'm asking you one last time." I pointed toward my room. "The doctor says I'm at risk of miscarriage. I can't take any more stress tonight. Are you staying with me, or going back to Ivy?" His phone rang at that exact moment. Ivy was crying. The police were still asking about the crash, she said, and she was scared to be alone in her room. Dominic didn't even hesitate. "Go lie down," he told me. "There are doctors everywhere. You'll be fine. I'll go deal with this and be back in 10 minutes." "If you leave now, we're really over." He frowned at me like I was a child throwing a tantrum. "We'll talk when you've calmed down." Then he turned and walked through the rain toward the car parked at the curb. Gripping the railing, I followed him down two steps, ready to call him back. Headlights snapped on in a black SUV near the exit. The engine roared. Instead of heading for the exit, it whipped around and came straight at me. I had just enough time to shield my belly before the SUV slammed into my side. As the impact threw me sideways, I saw Dominic had already crossed the street. His back was to me as he opened the car door. He didn't hear the crash or see the SUV speed away. Rain hammered down. I opened my mouth to call his name, but no sound came. Dominic ducked into the car. The door shut, and his taillights vanished into the rain. I lay in blood thinned by the rain, watching him leave for another woman. He never looked back before I blacked out. He had no idea his wife and child were lying less than a block away, their lives hanging by a thread.
