Chapter 5

LUCY He chuckled again. I started to feel uneasy about the whole situation at this point. "No, we did not." He said softly, fighting the smile threatening to tear across his face. "Then why am I…?" “You looked like you needed saving from the guy you were with,” he pulled the blanket over me and I snuggled into it. “ I heard you scream and I decided to check it out. You had a man with you, I don't know who he was, he was kissing and…well, trying to take advantage of you. I came there and stopped him and brought you here because you couldn't tell me where you lived. You passed out." I burrowed deeper into the blanket, trying to escape the shame that was threatening to engulf me. "When I brought you here," he continued, unaware of my discomfort, "you had your vomit all over your clothes. I couldn't let you sleep in it." "So you undressed me?" "No, you did that yourself. You woke up and insisted. I just lent you my shirt. I'll let you be now ." He headed to the door "The bathroom is down the hallway if you need to make use of it. There's an extra toothbrush in the cabinet, down there." He supplied as he walked away, leaving the door ajar. I got up slowly, taking in the room. The whole bedroom was in white accent, the bed stood in the center with a modern white side table on the left side, and a lamp sat on it. The pillows were in different shades of white and hues of gray. A cream-coloured sofa sat close to the window accompanied by curtains of the same color. I proceeded down the hallway, my footsteps making hollow sounds in the silent house. “Breakfast is ready whenever you are” his voice carried over the stairs, breaking the silence. I stepped out of the bathroom a few minutes later, feeling refreshed. The aroma of freshly baked bread hit my nostrils as I came into the kitchen. He stood by the counter, whisking the eggs in a bowl. “Found everything you need?” he asked, turning the stove down. I nodded and sat down on one of the aisle seats. He put a plate stacked with bacon, eggs and french toast in front of me and my stomach rumbled in response. The last time I had eaten was on the night I had an encounter with Blake. What was he doing right now? Is he worried about me or too preoccupied with his mate? How do I get over this feeling of heartache? God, it hurts! A sound close to my ears startled me out of my thoughts. It was Austin snapping his fingers at me. I looked at him and the food, feeling lost. "Come on, dig in. It's getting cold," he cautioned me. I dug into it without a word and felt his eyes on me as I devoured the food. "So, where do you live?" he asked, drawing the basket of bread closer to me. I could tell he was trying to make conversation. “ I could drive you back home.” "I… I don't… I don't have a home." I mumbled and changed the conversation. "What were you doing standing outside the club?" "I've been following you all day and I just happen to end up at the club," he replied. I stared at him with my mouth open. He looked up at me and grinned widely. "Relax, I was just pulling your legs." He shook his head, adding, "I was getting bored of the excitement inside the club so I stepped out for fresh air. Does that satisfy you?" "Yes. Thank you for helping me yesterday." "So will you tell me who Blake is, then?" I stared at him wide-eyed, my jaw dropping open for the second time. "You kept murmuring the name in your sleep all night." He continued, unfazed by my reaction. I picked up my plate and headed to the sink. I needed to keep my hands busy and my back turned towards him. "I'm not trying to be rude but I don't want to talk about it." I rinsed my plate, adding quickly, "I think it's time I take my leave, and, uh, thanks for the meal. It was delicious. " “No, no, you don't have to leave right away.” He stood up quickly, knocking his stool backwards. "You can take your time. I love your company and I'm kind of lonely. I'll drop you off later." "Where is my purse?" I asked, ignoring his offer. I needed to leave here to get my bearings. I'm a homeless woman with zero friends. Blake had been my all. I've to quit my job. I can't live around Blake anymore and risk the chance of seeing him coincidentally. "In the bedroom." I hurried to the bedroom, found it lying in the corner of the room, grabbed it and raced back down. "Thank you, uhmm….” “Austin.” I moved towards him, stretching my hand forward, “Thank you Austin for everything, truly. I will always be indebted to you." "You can start by telling me your name?" he suggested, rocking his body on his heel. We could be friends. I could feel his excitement and it made me smile. He was an odd guy but harmless, I think. We might make good friends, a pair of odd individuals. “Lucy,” I replied, smiling broadly at him. I turned around and headed for the door. “How do I see you again Lucy?” he threw his question at me. He is persistent and I found it adorable. I pushed open the door, still smiling, ready to leave, but my response to him froze on my lips. I stood there, hardly moving, barely breathing and my heart beating painfully against her chest. The shock left me so dizzy as I stared at the object of my discomfort. My face turned pale, devoid of color as every ounce of blood drained from it.
