Chapter 5 – Missing Piece

1099 Words
Dwayne Thomson I sat on the sofa, the divorce papers laid out in front of me, the lawyer patiently waiting. Sasha leaned close, her perfume filling the air, and smiled at me. “I hear Andrea and her parents have left the pack already,” she said sweetly. “The papers only need your signature now. Your bond with that disgusting woman… finally ends. So, what are you waiting for? Sign them.” I picked up the pen, staring at the documents. Andrea’s signature glared at me like a mirror. I sighed, trying to breathe steady, but memories of that day hit me—blood everywhere, her screaming, our baby… gone. It was my fault. My damn fault. I rubbed my face. My chest felt hollow. Why did I feel this numbness? The way she rejected me… her tears, her sorrow. She had every right to hate me. She had every right to leave. Jay, my wolf, whispered in my mind, something’s missing. You feel it too. I froze, the empty ache in my chest widening. Missing… piece. That’s exactly what it felt like. Sasha snapped her fingers in front of my face. “Hey, are you okay? Why do you look like that? Don’t tell me you’re having second thoughts.” I frowned at her, my hand tightening on the pen. “Of course not,” I said, forcing my voice steady. Still, as I signed the papers, something inside me twisted painfully. Andrea… she’s gone. And the void she left… it’s more than just her absence. It’s the piece of me that only she ever filled. I set the pen down, staring at the papers. My heart… it aches in a way I’ve never felt before. The lawyer finally spoke, “It will process soon. Just a couple of days, and it will be approved. Both parties have agreed to the divorce.” He gave me a nod and left. Sasha immediately hopped onto my lap like she always did, her perfume strong in my senses. I felt my patience snap. I stood up sharply. “Not now,” I said, my voice low and harsh. Her smile faded. “What’s wrong?” Before I could answer, the door opened. My parents, Alpha Troy and Queen Isabel, entered the room. I felt my stomach tighten. Sasha and I both looked down, feeling the weight of their presence. “Are you both happy now?” my father’s voice roared, cold and steady. Sasha’s hands trembled. She sank to her knees, tears flowing freely. “We love each other! So much! Anyone in the pack knows it! Andrea… she interfered, she makes Dwayne marked her forced, but we belong together!” Alpha Troy shook his head. “Stand up, Sasha.” I stayed silent, staring at the floor. Queen Isabel’s eyes glistened with anger and sorrow. “What I cannot accept… is that the baby is gone. It could have been the next heir.” Sasha grabbed my hands, her tears falling. “Please! I can give him a child too! Don’t believe Andrea. The miscarriage… it wasn’t us!” Alpha Troy looked at me. “Dwayne, what is your plan now?” Sasha clutched my arm. “Please… remember your promise. You said you’d marry me, make me Luna. Don’t forget.” I swallowed hard, my throat dry. My anger should be clear, but my chest… it felt tight, hesitant. This was what I wanted, right? To end everything with Andrea. But why did it feel so… wrong now? Queen Isabel’s voice cut through my thoughts. “Dwayne, your thirtieth birthday is coming. You must have a Luna before you take the throne. If you are not ready… your coronation is postponed.” Sasha’s eyes flashed with anger. “No way!” I looked at her, then at my parents. My heart raced, a storm of desire, guilt, and confusion swirling inside me. Something about this… isn’t right. Sasha suddenly started crying, hysterical, her body shaking. “Dwayne… please! You said you love me!” she screamed, then everything went black as she collapsed. I froze. My heart stopped. Alpha Troy and Queen Isabel both stared, stunned. “Call the pack doctors now!” my father barked. Panic spread through the room. Beta Roland and Margaret, Sasha’s parents, rushed in, worry etched on their faces. Gary, one of the pack doctors, quickly checked her pulse and said, “She lost consciousness from stress. She’s pregnant. That’s why her body reacted this way.” Pregnant. My chest tightened. I hadn’t expected this. Sasha slowly opened her eyes, blinking, confusion and fear in them. “What… what happened?” Beta Roland stepped forward, voice shaking. “Dwayne, Alpha Troy, Queen Isabel… please, don’t embarrass her in front of the pack. You must be responsible for her now.” I looked at Sasha, her tears still wet on her cheeks, her small hands shaking. She didn’t even fully understand yet. “I’-I’m… pregnant?” she whispered, eyes wide. I swallowed hard, running a hand over my face. I exhaled slowly. “Okay,” I said, my voice low, steady but heavy. “I… I will marry you.” Sasha’s lips trembled. I could see the fear and relief in her eyes. My parents nodded stiffly, Alpha Troy and Queen Isabel both still frowning but silent. Dwayne… I hope you don’t regret this… Jay’s voice echoed sharply in my mind. I clenched my jaw, gripping the edge of the sofa. I know, Jay, I thought back, my wolf’s voice vibrating through me. I know exactly what I’m doing… or at least I think I do. You better, Jay growled. But still you feel empty, missing something… I exhaled slowly, trying to steady the storm inside me. Sasha was fragile, trembling in front of me, and yet, there was desire, tension, and an ache I couldn’t ignore. I had to be careful—but something inside me whispered that nothing could ever be simple again. Then my thoughts drifted, unbidden. Andrea… where is she now? Did she really leave the pack for good? Could she ever forgive me for what I did? My chest tightened at the thought. Maybe not. Maybe I ruined everything. Could we see each other again? No. I shook my head angrily, forcing the thoughts away. Why the hell do I even want to see her? Sasha is the one I love, right? She’s carrying my pup. I need to focus on her, on our future, and nothing—absolutely nothing—should distract me from that. Or not?
