Chapter 5

Sara came looking for me about an hour later. I had already made about twenty venom rounds and I still could not relax. I was worried about Jeremy. I also did not know how the others would handle Roy, Daryl, Sam, and Jackson. Olesia was following Sara into the armory, watching everything I was doing. “After some brilliant work by Jason. We found their flight. I’ve arranged for them to be picked up and brought directly here. We can meet them in the house so they don’t know about our safehouse in the barn. Olesia and Jason work very well together. I don’t think we would have found the information if it hadn’t been for her.” I smiled at Olesia and nodded to Sara. “Thank you for taking care of that Sara. Olesia, I think you will fit in here just fine. Thank you for your help.” “You’re welcome. May I ask what you are making?” Olesia was inching closer to the work bench that I was on. “Angel’s making her famous venom rounds that none of us can seem to master. Oh I also made a call to a local venom dealer. I figured you might need more. They have only viper venom so I ordered some from them. It’s paid for so we just have to pick it up when the others get back.” “Great work Sara. I’ll go get it once everyone is back.” “May I learn how to make these?” Olesia sounded excited. Sara laughed and shook her head. I nodded and handed a pair of rubber gloves to Olesia. “Ok I’m out of here. I can’t even begin to successfully make those.” Sara laughed as she left the room. Olesia and I worked for about another hour or so making the rounds. At first she just watched me make a few then she began to try. After an hour she was the closest to making the rounds than anyone had ever gotten. I was pleasantly surprised. She seemed to have a knack for handling the different casings. She had almost created one round with venom until one of the casings broke. She was extremely frustrated. “You are doing marvelous Olesia. No one has ever made it this far yet. I think with a little practice that you will be able to master this skill.” I knew there was pride in my voice as I spoke to her. She smiled at me and nodded. “It’s more difficult than it looks. I do love a challenge though. It’s almost like a puzzle and I love puzzles.” We heard the others in the training room so we abandoned our puzzle and went out to greet them. I watched as Brooks and Lee carried multiple bags of groceries to the kitchen. They were talking animatedly about the upcoming meals they could make. I could only laugh at the two of them. Jake followed with Leona. They were discussing the vehicles they had picked up. “Well it seems the supply run was successful.” I laughed as I addressed Jake. “Successful and uneventful. The chefs are excited about their haul. Leona here was amazing when getting the vehicles. She was able to negotiate a better deal for the three car we got. Even the Aston Martin that Brooks had to have.” The sarcasm coming from Jake was comical to say the least. “You know you enjoy Brooks list more than he does.” I teased. “You tell him that and I won’t speak to you for a month.” Jake hissed. All of us laughed then. It seemed that everything was coming together nicely. So why couldn’t I shake this feeling of dread. Something was going to happen, I could feel it. Brooks sauntered into the room with the biggest smile on his face. “Well all, I am going to take a drive.” “Great then you can take Angel to pick up her order.” Sara and Jason had come to see what was brought back. “Even better. What do you say Angel? Sunday drive?” Brooks sounded almost giddy. “Well if you don’t mind driving me around then I say let’s go.” I could only smile. “Alright miss Daisy. I’ll be your driver for this evening.” Brooks held his arm out to me. We all laughed as I placed my hand on his arm. I allowed him to lead me out of the room. Like a real gentleman, he opened my door and allowed me to slide into the passenger seat. I really could not understand this choice of car. It was a sports car with room for two people only. Why would Brooks want this? Once we were on the road I realized why he wanted this car. It was fast and smooth. I was impressed at the way it handled. Brooks and his dream list. We made it to the suppler in no time. Thanks to Brooks’ lead foot. I walked into the research facility alone. Brooks said he’d wait in the car. I had rolled my eyes but agreed to pick this up by myself. The receptionist was a mousy little thing. She seemed too timid to work the front desk. My order was ready when we arrived, so she handed it over without much fuss. I signed the forms and was back in the car before Brooks had time to leave me. He was itching to drive around. We were taking the long way, according to him. It was nice to watch the scenery go by. The sun was starting to go down so I knew Jeremy and the others would be joining us soon. I was nervous but excited to see him. I really did miss him. Brooks had just declared that we were heading back when I was hit with a vision. I could see a man lying in an alley bleeding. He seemed to have been beaten by more than one individual. I couldn’t see anyone else but I just knew it was more than one. I could feel his pain and see him struggling. I came to with Brooks staring at me. He had stopped the car and was looking concerned. “Angel. Are you alright?” “Someone is hurt and needs help. I can feel it Brooks. This isn’t like any vision I’ve had before. I need to help this man.” I looked around at my surroundings. I was close to the spot that I saw the man. “Angel, how can you know where the man is? I know you want to help him but we couldn’t possibly find him.” “It’s close to here Brooks. I can feel it. I know it doesn’t make sense but I just know.” I tried to get him to understand but the confusion on his face never left. “Go back to the safe house and get another vehicle. I’ll need to transport the man and this car won’t do that.” “If you think I’m leaving you here then you’re crazy!” I didn’t even wait for him to say anything else. I jumped out of the car and started walking in the direction I was being pulled in. I heard Brooks curse and get out of the car as well. I didn’t care if he thought I was crazy. I had to get to that man. “Brooks, I’m serious. Go now our you won’t make it back in time.” I could tell he was arguing with himself. He wanted to follow orders, but he really didn’t want to leave me here alone. I just kept walking as I heard him swear again. I then heard the car engine rev. “Be careful Angel. I’ll be back soon with back up.” The car peeled out as Brooks pushed the pedal to the floor. I couldn’t focus on anything else at that moment. I could feel something pulling me towards the man in my vision. I didn’t know why I had to save him but I just knew that I had to. I felt an urgency in my bones as I rounded a corner to an alley. This must be it. I could hear muffled sounds coming from the darkened part of the alley. I think I made it in enough time to deal with the attackers. I began to jog toward the sounds. Then they stopped. My heart rate sped up. I was too late. I ran toward the pull. I would save this man if it was the last thing I did. I could hear feet running away from me. It must be the attackers. Then I saw him. He was laying in a broken heap against the side of the wall. I couldn’t tell what he looked like since his face was covered in blood and bruises. I could see blood seeping out of his abdomen, but I couldn’t see a wound. I knelt down beside the poor man and spoke softly to him. “Sir. I’m Angel. I’m going to help you alright. Please stay still. I have friends coming so we can help you.” I reached out to check his pulse when I received a shock. The shock was the same as when I touched Jackson. He was a vampire. How could anyone do this much damage to a vampire? He was a bloody mess. He hissed when we touched so I knew he was listening to me. “I know what you are sir. Can you heal from this?” He nodded ever so slightly. “Will you need blood to do so?” His eyes opened and looked at me. I knew then that he would need blood to recover. His eyes were a beautiful green like a spring meadow. I smiled and nodded to show him I understood. I could hear a car pull up at the mouth of the alley where I had entered. Brooks made good time. “Listen, my friends don’t know about vampires so I’m going to feed you before they get here. I am offering you my blood so you can heal yourself. Take what you need. I am a willing donor.” I stretched my wrist toward his mouth and waited. He reluctantly took hold of my wrist and brought it to his mouth. I heard running towards us and begged him with my eyes to hurry. My crew knew about Jeremy but not the others and I didn’t want to let the cat out of the bag. Just as I felt his teeth pierce my skin, I heard Jeremy yell. “Chere! No!” It was too late. My new friend had already begun to drink my blood. Jackson came out of no where and growled at the man feeding from my wrist. Jeremy looked panicked but I was calm. I could sense that the man attached to my wrist meant me no harm. Then it happened. I felt a force inside of me swell and envelope me and the man. I felt his tongue slide over the wounds in my wrist then it was like an explosion of light around us. I couldn’t see at first because of the blinding light. Then as the light faded, I could see my new friend smiling at me completely healed. How is that possible? Does that always happen? He was handsome in a boyish way. Blonde hair was no longer bloody and matted to his head. He stood and was a few inches taller than me. Where had the blood gone? “Chere, back away from him now.” Jeremy’s voice sounded deadly. “It’s alright poppet. They want to make sure that you are safe from me. Although I would never harm the woman who saved my life.” I smiled at the man. “May I have your name then?” I couldn’t help the curiosity. “I am Phillip. And may I say that is some blood you have there poppet. I have never been completely healed after just a sip.” I turned my attention to Jackson who was hovering around me. “Isn’t that how it works?” “No little one. The blood will help speed up the healing process. I have never seen it completely heal someone like that. You are even more special than we thought.” Jackson sounded thoughtful as he looked over Phillip. Jeremy decided this was the moment that he would extract me. He walked straight up to me and hefted me off the ground and over his shoulder. I was outraged. How dare he?! “Jeremy! You better put me down this instant! I am not playing around with you!” I kicked his thigh to emphasize my rage. He just placed me on my feet some distance from the two vampires. “What do you think you’re doing Chere. Leaving me behind. Then I find you feeding a vampire! Knowing full well that you are a drug to them. What is wrong with you!” My eyes narrowed and the anger began to burn. “I left because you were withholding information from me and making me feel like your ward. I needed to get back to my world where people respect me. And don’t treat me like a naughty child!” We glared at each other as I heard Brooks and Jake running toward me. Jackson cleared his throat. While Phillip and Roy laughed. “Angel! Thank God you’re alright. I drove as fast as I could. Sara about skinned me alive when I pulled in.” “I’m alright Brooks. It seems like our guests have found me after all. Please forgive my mood gentlemen. Let us all get into the vehicles and go back to the house. Jake, please call ahead and let Sara know that I am alright. And if Lee could get something together for everyone to eat that would be lovely.” “Of course Angel. Lee was already starting on a meal when Brooks came back. I’ll make sure it is in the dining room and ready. Are you riding with us?” “No she is not.” Jeremy sounded down right pissed. Good, that made two of us. “It’s alright Jake. I will accompany our guests back to the house.” Jake glared at Jeremy before he and Brooks nodded and left. “Well little one, I have so many questions for you. We will also need to test your blood.” “That would be fine Jackson. I will answer what I can when we arrive at our destination. Phillip, if you wouldn’t mind, can you accompany us as well. I want to know more about your attackers as well.” “I’m yours to command poppet.” He even saluted me. I sighed as I began to walk toward the van at the mouth of the alley. All of the men fell into step behind me without a word. I could feel Jeremy’s anger as if it were my own. This fight was far from over between us. I couldn’t fathom how he wouldn’t be able to understand my viewpoint. I was not a child. I expected to be treated as his equal. We all climbed into the van in silence. I sat in between Roy and Jeremy in the very back. They refused to allow me to sit anywhere else. This was going to be a long ride. Phillip filled us in about his attackers. Apparently it was a personal misunderstanding. He told me not to worry about it. He would handle it later. No one else spoke but I knew they were listening. After hearing about the attackers, the group fell into an uncomfortable silence for the rest of the ride.
