Chapter Two

~Allison~ "Where's Séres?" a disembodied voice asked. I felt a finger tap my shoulder before I had a chance to respond. A warm rush of air along with a hint of perfume hit my face as Javier pulled up a chair besides me. He smiled, showing off those perfect porcelain teeth of his. "I don't know." I shrugged along. "I thought she was with you." Javier raised a puzzled brow and shook his head in disbelief. As if the mere idea of Séres being with him was impossible. I knew we were all friends, but we had our boundaries with each other. But I didn't understand how the fact of her just being with him, as in being near him was somewhat uncomfortable for him. Javier's chocolate eyes scanned the library, from the ceiling to the bookshelves, until they fell on me. "What do you see in this library?" he asked, already amused. I gazed at him stolidly. "I don't know "I don't know. Maybe the books?" I answered, sarcasm dripping from my tone. He chuckled deeply in response. Javier averted his attention to one of the books I had piled on the desk. He flipped through the pages with a bored expression. My eyes roamed his face, from the light ebony colour of his skin, to the shiny black curls of hair on his head. He was sure something to look at; I'd give him that. Suddenly, his lips curled into a cynical smile. "Like what you see?" he asked, without even looking up from the book. I rolled my eyes with a huff. "Don't get cocky." "Guys!" A feminine voice rang through the halcyon library, causing all heads to snap up from whatever they were doing. I released my shoulders once I noticed the familiar blonde bounding our way, with a dark haired boy behind her. "I have great news!" "Séres," I cautioned. "You can't speak so loud in the library. Now sit." She was filled with energy as she bounced on her spot. Reluctantly, she pouted and pulled out a chair and sat next to me. Jacob took a seat opposite us, next to Javier. "So, here it goes." Séres grinned widely. "I stayed back during Physics and did some extra reading on today's topic." Jacob scoffed, already looking uninterested. I guessed she already gave him the whole story on their way here. "Today's topic?" Javier repeated. "Dimensions?" Séres quickly nodded in agreement. "You don't believe that, don't you?" Javier leaned in. "Science has evidently proved it another theory. Theories can be wrong." "Vice versa." "Well, what'd you find that's so thrilling?" I asked, crossing my arms over my chest. Séres pursed her lips and leaned back in her chair. "Well, I've finally decided to pay attention during my physics class." We all stared. "Look, it turns out the topics can be rather interesting." "That's it?" I asked. She shook her head and continued. "I've learned that currents between magnets, are what cause a magnetic field... right?" We all nodded. "Also, a magnetic field can be used to produce current." "Yeah? So what?" Javier said. "Think about it geographically. At every point in the earth, where large masses of energy are being released, some form of electromagnetic energy is being released one way or the other. But they're in such small amounts that it's sometimes undetectable." "What are you trying to say?" Jacob asked, with his dark eyes trained on Séres. I assumed he hadn't heard that part of her story. "Haven't you guys ever wondered what would have happened if we could raise the levels of electromagnetic energy?" "Why? Do you want to make a massive current wave? Séres, you've just started this subject," I said. Her golden eyes twinkled. "Maybe we could open a whole new frequency of some sort." I stared at Séres in disbelief. She flipped a golden strand over her shoulder as she awaited our response. Javier ran a hand over his face. "Um, there's this movie coming out tomorrow, and I'd really like to see it. You guys coming?" he asked. Séres' jaw dropped open. "So you're just going to disregard me?" she snapped. Javier shrugged, and stood with his stuff in his hands. He raised his index finger and jabbed it at her. "You're crazy." And he left. Jacob followed suite, but paused as he began to push in his chair. "Tomorrow, eight o'clock p.m.," he reminded. I nodded. I grabbed my coat and stood, stretching my limbs. "Come on." I pulled Séres to her feet. "If it makes you feel any better, I don't think you're crazy." Séres' amber eyes lit up. "Really?" she squeaked, as we walked out the library. I hummed and nodded. It was a white lie. "Yep. But your idea, sure as hell is." Séres slumped her shoulders. "Why would you want to interfere with the Earth's energy sources? Didn't you ever think that maybe, these electromagnetic currents were meant to be undetected for a reason?" I sighed once we approached the door to our final class for the day. I turned to face her. "When the Earth regulates something, we always have a way of interfering." Séres shrugged nonchalantly. "Well, I'm just going to do some innocent research." She smiled with a hint of mischief. Yeah, just disregard everything I just said, I thought.
