We can only hope we’ve finally killed the scoundrel.” “No!” Katie seemed appalled. “I don’t want him to be dead!” Cesare stood peering at us. “So you know this man.” “Yes,” I said, “but not in the way you think.” Cesare said, “Untie the girl and bring her with us.” As we returned to the line of bodies, I walked beside Katie. “How close were you with these men?” “I don’t know what you’re talking about.” “Did your mother ever tell you about blood tea?” “Ugh,” Katie said. “That sounds disgusting.” I let out a laugh in spite of myself. “It’s not made of blood — it brings your monthly bleeding. You do get that, don’t you?”
