CHAPTER SEVEN

ZEPHYR'S POV

It's almost 10 pm when i finished work. I tried to call Nyx to ask him if he's already home but he wasn't answering his phone. I knew he attended the mini reunion of our friends with Emery. I didn't made it as i was really busy with work, not because Emery was there. I clicked my tongue when Nyx didn't picked up my call for the 8th time so i decided to dial Marjorie to ask.

"Yo, Zeph."

"Hey Marj, Are you all still at the restaurant? Nyx isn't picking up his phone. I'll pick him up if he is still there."

"Oh, we already went home around 9 pm. He might probably in your home, asleep. He didn't mention that he would go somewhere else." Marj said.

"Okay, thank you." Then i hung up. I packed up my things to head home. When i arrived home, i found Nyx sleeping on the couch. I walked towards him and grab his phone on the table, only to find it drained reason why he is not answering my calls. I lower down to kiss his forehead to wake him up and he gently stirs awake when he felt my lips.

"Hmm..you're back. What time is it?" He groans.

"It's already 11 pm, darling. Why are you sleeping here?" I asked. He just smiled and sat up.

"I've been waiting for you,of course. Sorry i fell asleep, i'm really tired today."

"Your phone is already drained. Charge it first then wait for me. Let's go to bed together. How's that?" He nodded and gives me a peck on my lips as he stood up and grabs his phone

"I'll wait for you in the bedroom." Then he walks away.

"By the way, there's food in the fridge. You can heat it up if you wanted to eat. I could wait for you." He said then shuts the door closed. I chuckled and went straight to the bathrom to take a bath. After a few minutes, i went straight to our bedroom.

"Are you okay?" I asked Nyx when i saw his eyes kinda puffy as i sat beside him. Did he cried?

"Yeah. Im fine." He aswered.

"Your eyes are puffy. Did you cry?"

"No."

"You're lying." I said.

"Why did you say so?"

"Because you can't look me straight in the eyes. I know when you lie to me, darling. Now tell me what's really bothering you?"

He took a deep breathe and i took his hand to comfort him. To silently tell him that i am here with him, that he could trust me whatever it is.

"Emery wants to talk to you." He said.

"I told her already that i wasn't ready to face her about the past. Why is she so persistent?" I said as i rolled my eyes.

"Are you really not ready to face her? Or you just want to avoid talking about your past because deep inside you know you still have a feelings for her?"

I was surprised on what he said, but i couldn't say anything because he might probably right. I am confused.

"Nyx, how could you think like that?" I asked as i let go of his hand. He just stares at me with tears forming in his eyes.

"I'm just... I don't know Zeph!" Then he burst out crying.

"I can see the confusion in your eyes everytime we talk about her. I'm scared, Zeph."

"Scared of what?"

"Scared of you chosing her again despite of me being here with you for 4 damn years. I know i'm just a fake protagonist in your story. Someone who just filled the void in your heart when she left." He said between his sobs. It hurts me seeing him crying. I grab his hand and gently cups his face.

"Nyx, darling... look at me." I whispered. His gaze went up and he is staring directly in my eyes as if he was searching for the truth.

"I chose you. Not because it's convenient. I chose you not because you were the one who's there when she left. I chose you because my heart told me so. I chose you because i love you." I said as i wiped his tears that streams down his face. I gave him a gentle peck on his lips and smiled.

"You were right. I am confused. But not the way you're implying. I'm confused whether i still want to see her or not. I'm confused because my heart still beats faster but not because i still love her. It's because im afraid. I don't know if i can face what really happened in the past." I said.

"What if she wants you back, Zeph? I'm scared of being left alone again." He whispered.

"You won't be alone. No matter what, i will always choose you. I love you, Nyx. You don't have to be scared and overthink things. Do you trust me?" I gently asked.

"I always trust you, Zeph. And i will always be." I wrapped my arms around him and gave him a tight hug. I can't help but to smile. Because Nyx isn't the type of person who likes to open up what's on his mind. He always overthinks even just a small things.

FLASHBACK (4TH YEAR COLLEGE)

It was Tuesday morning. Since we are already in our final year in college, it became really hectic to us: projects, lectures, exams, research papers. We were in cafeteria when i notice Nyx being quiet beside me.

"Hey, darling. You okay?" I asked. But he just ignored me and seems like he is out in his thoughts. He was just staring blankly somewhere.

"Nyx?"I tried again but to no avail.

"Nyx" Then i slightly nudged him.

"H-huh?" He asked.

"You okay?"

"Y-yeah. I'm fine" he simply answered and turn his attention back to their research paper that he is currently revising for final defense. I didn't bother him again but gave him a gentle pat on his shoulder to cheer him up. I excused myself for a bit to grab some food for us.

"What the f**k, Nyx!" I almost stopped on my tracks when i heard a shout from our table. I saw Nyx, with his head down. Seems like their leader on their thesis is reprimanding him.

"You only have one simple job, and you can't even do it right! You know we're in a rush since the fnal defense is 2 days from now, and now you're telling me, your laptop is corrupted?"

"I can do the powerpoint again you don't have to worry." I heard him answered.

"You should be." Then he walked away. I walked towards our table and steal a glance of him. He really was on a verge of crying.

"You didn't tell me you have a problem." I said

"I don't want to bother you."

"What happened, darling?" I asked. He took a deep breathe.

"My laptop got corrupted. I guess it had some malware or something. I have to redo our powerpoint and i don't even know i could recover some of my files." He answered with shaky voice.

"Is that all?" He shook his head.

"I'm stupid." He said and then he began to cry. I hugged him and gently rubs his back.

"Shh. You're not stupid. Stop overthinking, okay? Everything is gonna be fine."

"They're probably judging me now. A dean's lister, but stupid who couldn't even do simple tasks" He whispered. I broke the hug and cups his face forcing him to look at me.

"Darling, you're not stupid. Don't make a single mistake devalue your worth. Don't mind them All that matters is the people around you who really loves you for who you are." He smiled at me and nods. I leaned in closer and gave him a gentle kiss on his lips.

"I love you."

"I love you too. I'm so lucky to have you." He answered.

"Now, let's have your lappy get fix so you could use it." He nods then we gather our things and walks away hand in hand.

END OF FLASHBACK

And from that day on, i promised myself to never do things that could make him sad and overthinking things again. That is why, Emery's return and approaching me kinda scares me. Because i don't want Nyx to overthink especially we're on the same workplace. I gently pats his head as he lays his head on my chest. It took him a while to calm down from his breakdown.

"I understand if you don't want to talk to her at the moment. But i know you also want a closure and answers to your questions. I'm not pressuring you. I will understand if someday you were ready to hear her explanation. Because if i were you, i will try to know the answers; for closure and peace." He said.

"I know. Stop worrying, okay? So this is the reason you were so quiet and wasn't answering my calls?" I asked. He shook his head as an answer.

"Nope. I had a breakdown before i could plug my phone to charge. I'm sorry if i made you worry." He said.

"It's okay. Let's sleep now." He nods as we fixed our sleeping position, cudling each other. I took a deep breathe before i close my eyes.

I don't know what the future might bring to us, but all i know is Nyx is the person i chose and will continue choosing no matter what.
