“What is all this?”
“Scrolls, journals, drawings. Some heirlooms and powerful objects. All of them mostly saved by our ancestors. Luna knowledge passed down from Luna to Luna, Mother to Daughter. Priestess to Priestess.” She answers as she runs her fingers across a row of books on a double sided bookshelf built directly in the middle of the room. The wood looks ancient, but well preserved, and touches completely from floor to ceiling.
I look around the large circular room with a sense of wonderment and excitement.
Secrets and puzzles, my favorite things. Lara would go absolutely mental over this. She’s practically obsessed with our Moon Temple archives, she’s in that library more than anyone else.
“I see that look..” Mom says as she turns and arches her brow at me “.. you aren’t to share this with anyone. No matter how juicy the tale or intriguing the prophecy, whatever you read or find in this room that means it’s for your eyes only. Do understand?”
“What? Not even Lara?” I ask.
“No, not even Lara.” She answers.
“Come on Mom, you’ve really never shared any of this with anyone?”
A soft smile finds it’s way to her lips as she steps up to me and caress’s my arms.
“I shared them with the last Luna, my Mother, and now I’m sharing them with you. Our future Luna.”
I smile dopily at her and she pulls me in close and wraps her arms around me.
“Your Spirit is so much like your grandmother’s..” she sighs as she pulls back to look into my eyes “.. fiercely loyal, clever and brave. So kind, and yet I see the same unyielding warrior in you that I saw in her.”
“I wish I could’ve known her..” I add, fighting back tears.
“You can know her..” she smiles brightly at me as she turns around and goes to one of the two desks in the room “.. with this.”
She walks back to me holding a leather bound journal that’s weathered and torn, though not as much as some others on that same desk.
“This was my mother’s journal. There’s so much history and knowledge in here, I found it hard to know where to start. My mother did as I am doing now, she gave me my grandmother’s journal. I often wonder if that’s where we all start, I never got the chance to ask her.”
I study the outside of the book and this strange tingling sensation moves through me. This feeling of rightness, I swear it feels like this journal has always belonged to me, it is mine.
“I know you’ll want to stay up here a while, I certainly did my first time here. That other desk is yours..” she says as she points to the more empty desk that is directly opposite the other one “.. and anything you leave on it I won’t touch, it’ll make it easier in your comings and goings.”
“Could I just..” I start but Mom interrupts me immediately and answers me as if she can read my mind.
“Nothing is to leave this room, Kaia. This room was enchanted long ago by one of our ancestors. To protect anything from being destroyed or stolen. The entire world could go up in flames and still this room would remain. Protecting and preserving these parts of our lineage is very important. Just as you must not bring anyone here or speak of anything you find within these walls, you too shall not take anything from it. Especially the journals of our ancestors, they’re truths are the most dangerous of all if found in the wrong hands.”
“Okay..” I nod in agreement “.. I understand, I promise to protect this place as I protect our people.”
My vow seems to please my mother immensely and after another warm embrace she hands me the skeleton key that unlocked both doors and explains that it is the only key in existence that will allow us entry. Apparently it’s a very special key, another enchanted item that was made by the same ancestor that created the protective barriers around this room.
Once she leaves I find my way to a small reading nook on the opposite side of the room from where the desks are. I make myself comfortable and the I open up my grandmothers journal.
And the first four words I find within the journal take my breath away and I try desperately to keep my tears at bay.
“To my darling Granddaughter,
I have seen you; my gift of sight has shown me what I am not meant to be there to see. I thought at first I was having a vision of myself. But no, it was you. You will look so much like me that it warms my heart. Our snow white hair and soft curves, our milky white skin and heart shaped faces. Even our wide set mouths and full lips are the same.
But it was your eyes that showed me the truth. They will be as rare and as captivating as my own. But they are so different. My striking silver eyes have often made people uneasy, the magic inside me is not so easily concealed. My presence can often be intimidating in a way that makes people afraid to approach me, but that will not be the case with you.
Your golden hazel eyes, the eyes your father gives you, oh how they will shine as bright as the sun. They will offer up warmth and pull people in at first sight.
You don’t exist yet, your mother is but a small child now. Yael is so much more her father than she is me, already she can be as stoic and as contemplative as he is. Even at two years old her calm and observant nature is prevalent. Though in appearance she is the perfect blend of us, even her eyes are a harmonious blend of blue and silver. She is a kaleidoscope of beauty, she is our best parts.
As will you be the best parts of your parents.
I so badly want to tell you everything, to warn you of events meant to pass. But I know I cannot, for your path and your destination are so important that I cannot help you deviate from any part of the experience. No matter how difficult, or how painful it could become. But I will offer this bit of guidance before your true journey begins.
Be patient and trust in yourself, and in your heritage. This room and all the knowledge inside of it is key. I’d go so far as to say that many keys to many of the locked doors on your path will be found inside this room. And this is very important; when you come back, find me first and I will show you where to start.
In truth we will all of us, all of your ancestors, be a part of your path. Because it is our lessons and our knowledge that will help you succeed.
And I leave you with this, in the days to come give your whole heart to the ones you hold dear, spend as much time with them as possible. And make sure they know how much you love them. This will bring you great comfort in the end of your journey; the memories and the formidable bonds made in these coming days will help you more than I can say. I promise.
I love you, Kaia. Only the Goddess and the Moon could know just how much. I am always with you and always watching. And I will be there through it all.
Always, Always
Your Nana Seraphin”
I couldn’t read anymore after that first passage, I closed the journal and clutched it in my arms, holding it to my chest tightly. I laid down inside that small nook and I cried as my grandmothers words moved through me and wound themselves up inside my mind.
As I fell asleep in a hidden room, with my grandmother trapped within my arms and tear stained cheeks, I swear I heard her. As I drifted off into a dreamless sleep I know it was her I heard.
And she said one word.
Always.
