The heartbeat inside Ivy did not stop.
BOOM.
The walls of the chapel trembled.
BOOM.
Dust fell from the ceiling.
BOOM.
Adrian stared at Ivy as though he was seeing her for the first time.
“What is happening to you?”
“I don't know.”
Ivy pressed a hand against her chest.
The strange rhythm continued beneath her ribs.
Her mother looked terrified.
“We have to leave.”
Adrian turned toward her.
“Why?”
“Because this place is no longer safe.”
“Neither is the palace.”
“That isn't what I mean.”
Her mother pointed toward the floor.
“The Heart of Eternity has awakened beneath us.”
A c***k split across the stone.
Silver light poured through it.
Ivy stepped backward.
“What is underneath the chapel?”
Her mother hesitated.
“The first Heart.”
“What does that mean?”
“It means the thing Malakar has been searching for isn't inside you.”
Ivy's eyes widened.
“Then where is it?”
Her mother looked at the glowing c***k.
“It has been beneath Elaria all along.”
A violent tremor threw everyone off balance.
Adrian caught himself against a pillar.
“Ivy!”
She had fallen to her knees.
Her wrist was glowing.
The number had disappeared.
In its place was a single symbol:
∞
Ivy stared at it.
“What does that mean?”
Her mother whispered:
“Everything has changed.”
---
They escaped the chapel moments before the ceiling collapsed.
By sunrise, they had reached an abandoned watchtower overlooking the northern forest.
Adrian stood near the window, watching smoke rise from the direction of the chapel.
Ivy sat across from her mother.
For the first time in years, she could look at her mother without wondering whether she was looking at a ghost.
But the reunion wasn't what she had imagined.
There were too many unanswered questions.
“You said my memories were erased,” Ivy said.
Her mother nodded.
“Most of them.”
“Why can I remember Adrian now?”
“Because the curse is weakening.”
“Then why can't I remember everything?”
Her mother looked down.
“Because some memories were never meant to return.”
Ivy frowned.
“Why?”
“Because they contain the truth about your father.”
The room went silent.
Adrian turned from the window.
“What about her father?”
Her mother closed her eyes.
“He wasn't just a Keeper.”
Ivy waited.
“He was the last Guardian of the Heart.”
Ivy's breath caught.
“My father?”
“Yes.”
“But he was a baker.”
Her mother smiled sadly.
“That was the life he wanted you to know.”
Ivy shook her head.
“So everything I knew about my family was a lie?”
“Not everything.”
“What wasn't?”
“That he loved you.”
Ivy looked away.
Her mother's voice softened.
“Your father gave up his position as Guardian because he believed you deserved an ordinary life.”
“Then why did he die?”
“He didn't.”
Ivy froze.
“What?”
Her mother looked at her.
“Your father is alive.”
The room became completely silent.
Adrian's expression changed.
Ivy stared at her mother.
“No.”
“He survived.”
“You told me he was murdered.”
“I lied.”
“Why?”
“Because Malakar was searching for him.”
Ivy stood.
“You let me mourn him for ten years!”
“I know.”
“You let me believe both my parents were gone!”
“I know.”
Ivy's voice cracked.
“How could you?”
Her mother stood too.
“Because if Malakar knew your father was alive, he would have used him to find you.”
Ivy shook her head.
“You should have trusted me.”
“I was trying to keep you alive.”
“And now?”
Her mother looked toward the horizon.
“Now keeping you alive may no longer be enough.”
---
A sound came from outside.
Branches snapping.
Adrian immediately reached for his sword.
“Someone's coming.”
Everyone went quiet.
Footsteps approached the watchtower.
One.
Two.
Three.
Then a voice called from below.
“Open the door.”
Ivy's heart raced.
Her mother moved toward the window.
She looked down.
Her face changed.
“It's him.”
Ivy rushed over.
A man stood at the bottom of the tower.
Older than she remembered.
His hair was streaked with gray.
He wore a dark traveler's cloak.
But there was no mistaking him.
Ivy's breath caught.
“Dad…”
The man looked up.
His eyes filled with tears.
“Ivy.”
She ran downstairs.
He barely had time to open his arms before she reached him.
For several seconds, neither spoke.
Then Ivy pulled away.
“You're alive.”
He nodded.
“I am.”
“You lied to me.”
His expression fell.
“I know.”
“Everyone lied to me.”
“I know.”
“Why?”
Her father looked toward the tower.
“Because the moment you awakened, the people hunting you would stop at nothing to reach you.”
Ivy wiped her eyes.
“Malakar?”
Her father's face hardened.
“Not only Malakar.”
Adrian stepped outside.
“Who else?”
Her father looked at him.
For a moment, his expression became unreadable.
Then he said:
“The royal council.”
Adrian stiffened.
“What?”
“Half the council has been working for Malakar for years.”
“That's impossible.”
“Is it?”
Her father looked toward the distant palace.
“Your kingdom has been built on a lie, Adrian.”
Adrian's jaw tightened.
“What lie?”
“The Life Marks.”
Ivy looked between them.
“What about them?”
Her father lowered his voice.
“They don't measure how long people are destined to live.”
Adrian's expression changed.
“Then what do they measure?”
Her father answered:
“How much life the kingdom has already taken from them.”
---
Nobody spoke.
The wind moved through the trees.
Ivy stared at her father.
“Taken?”
He nodded.
“Every Life Mark is connected to the Heart beneath Elaria. For centuries, the royal bloodline has controlled that power.”
Adrian looked horrified.
“You're saying the monarchy steals people's lives?”
“Not knowingly.”
“Then who does?”
“Malakar discovered how to control the system.”
Ivy's wrist began glowing.
Her father noticed.
“And now he wants to use you to control it completely.”
Adrian looked at Ivy.
“What happens if he succeeds?”
Her father hesitated.
“He won't simply become immortal.”
“What then?”
“He'll become the only person in Elaria who decides when everyone else dies.”
Ivy's stomach dropped.
“So the curse…”
“Was created to control you.”
Her father looked at Adrian.
“And Adrian was chosen because his Life Mark is connected to the royal seal.”
Adrian's expression hardened.
“So I'm a key.”
“Yes.”
“And Ivy is another.”
“Yes.”
Adrian looked at Ivy.
“Then together…”
Her father finished the sentence.
“They can unlock the Heart.”
---
That night, Ivy couldn't sleep.
She stood outside the watchtower, staring at the stars.
Adrian joined her a few minutes later.
“You should rest.”
“So should you.”
“I've noticed you like saying that.”
A faint smile appeared on Ivy's face.
“Maybe because you never listen.”
He stood beside her.
For a moment, neither spoke.
Then Ivy said:
“Do you remember everything?”
“No.”
“What do you remember?”
Adrian looked toward the stars.
“The garden.”
Ivy smiled.
“The flowers?”
“The tree.”
“The one with the swing?”
“Yes.”
She laughed softly.
“You pushed me too high.”
“You asked me to.”
“I was six!”
“And very demanding.”
She shook her head.
For the first time since discovering the truth about her life, she felt almost normal.
Then Adrian's expression became serious.
“There was something else.”
“What?”
“A promise.”
Ivy looked at him.
“What promise?”
“When we were separated.”
He paused.
“You told me that if I ever forgot you, you would make me remember.”
Ivy's heart tightened.
“I said that?”
“Yes.”
“And did you promise me anything?”
Adrian looked directly at her.
“I promised I would find you.”
The words echoed strangely.
Like an old memory waking up.
Ivy's mark flashed.
A vision appeared.
Two children standing beneath the ancient tree.
Young Ivy was crying.
Young Adrian held out his hand.
“Don't forget me.”
“I won't.”
“You promise?”
“I promise.”
Then a voice came from behind them.
“Promises are dangerous things.”
The vision shattered.
Ivy stumbled.
Adrian caught her arm.
“What did you see?”
She looked toward the forest.
“Someone was watching us.”
“Who?”
“I don't know.”
Her father suddenly shouted from the tower.
“GET INSIDE!”
A black arrow flew through the night.
It struck the ground between Ivy and Adrian.
The arrow immediately burst into dark flames.
Adrian pulled Ivy backward.
More arrows flew from the trees.
Her father and mother rushed outside.
“Take Ivy and run!” her father shouted.
Adrian drew his sword.
“No.”
“Adrian!”
“I won't leave them.”
A figure emerged from the darkness.
Then another.
Then another.
Dozens of masked soldiers surrounded the watchtower.
Their armor carried the royal crest.
Adrian stared at them in disbelief.
“Those are royal guards.”
Ivy's father looked at him.
“Not anymore.”
The soldiers raised their weapons.
Then someone stepped through the trees.
A familiar voice spoke.
“I'm afraid your father is correct.”
Ivy froze.
Queen Seraphine walked into the clearing.
But she wasn't wearing her crown.
She wore black armor.
Adrian's face went pale.
“Mother?”
The Queen looked at him.
Her expression was cold.
“I'm sorry, Adrian.”
Ivy's mother stepped in front of her.
“What have you done?”
Seraphine looked at Ivy.
“I came to collect the Heartbearer.”
Adrian shook his head.
“No.”
The Queen's eyes hardened.
“Move aside.”
“I won't.”
“You don't understand what is coming.”
“Then explain it.”
Seraphine looked at Ivy.
“Your mark has awakened the Heart.”
She lifted her hand.
Behind her, the soldiers raised their weapons.
“If she isn't taken back to the palace before sunrise…”
The Queen's voice became barely a whisper.
“…the entire kingdom will fall.”
Ivy stared at her.
“Why?”
Seraphine looked toward the distant horizon.
“Because the Heart has already begun to choose its new ruler.”
Adrian stepped forward.
“Who?”
The Queen's eyes settled on Ivy.
“You.”
And beneath the earth, something enormous opened its eyes.
BOOM.
BOOM.
BOOM.
The entire forest shook.
Ivy's silver mark transformed once more.
And this time, a crown appeared above it.
