Ryan turned, and our eyes met. He didn’t expect me. It showed, then his gaze moved to Nick, his expression tightening. Nick leaned closer. “I didn’t know he would be here,” he said under his breath. He must have assumed my hesitation was because of the history between our families. Ryan was still watching. The man beside him stepped forward. His hair was already going grey, and the way he carried himself made it clear he was the one we came to see. “Welcome,” he said. “I was told you’d be here on your father’s behalf.” Nick nodded once. “That’s correct.” He motioned to the seats, and we took them. He turned toward Ryan. “I hope you don’t mind. I had already scheduled this meeting before you got back to me. It wasn’t easy getting through to you, so I couldn’t pass up the chance.” R
