Justin’s voice cut through the ceremony as he began the valedictorian speech. The crowd applauded. More speeches followed. But throughout the ceremony, Ryan, the girl beside him, and I kept stealing glances at one another. After the ceremony ended, everyone moved onto the field for photos and goodbyes. Justin walked over with a grin. “So,” he asked, “how was the speech?” I laughed. “Too intelligent for my brain to process. I might need to steal your brain before you leave for medical school.” He chuckled and pushed a loose strand of hair behind my ear. That was when I felt it, the sense of someone watching us. I turned and found Ryan standing a short distance away, staring directly at us. For the first time all day, his expression was clear. He looked furious. A small spark of hope
