Signing the Contract

My fingers trembled against the heavy silver pen. The silence in the office was suffocating, broken only by the steady crackle of the fireplace. Matteo didn't push me. He didn't raise his voice or lean closer. He just sat behind his desk, watching me with those piercing gray eyes like a chess player waiting for my unavoidable move. "Sixty thousand dollars," I whispered, looking at the contract's bold heading. "Consensual Domestic Agreement." "Paid directly to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital," Matteo said, his voice flat and practical. "Along with a top-tier medical security detail stationed outside your brother's hospital room. No rival gang will target him to get to me." I swallowed the lump in my throat. My brother, Toby, was only eight years old. He was fighting a battle he never asked for, and I had spent two years working extra double shifts, skipping meals, and ignoring collection calls just to keep him on the treatment list. Now, a ruthless mafia don was offering to solve all my problems with one stroke of a pen. But the cost was my entire life. "Twelve months," I said, looking up to catch his eye. "Only one year. And then you let me walk away. Completely free, with no attachments." "Twelve months," Matteo agreed smoothly. "You play the devoted wife in public. You attend social galas, sit by my side at Syndicate meetings, and make the world believe I am settled and strong. In private, you have your own wing of this house. I will not cross your threshold unless invited." "And no... physical contact?" I asked, my face flushing hot. A slow, dangerous smile curled the corner of Matteo's lips. "Only what is necessary for the public to believe us, little nurse. A hand on your waist, a kiss on the cheek for the cameras. Nothing more." I took a deep breath, clutching the pen tighter. I knew I was walking straight into the lion's den. But looking at the paper, I knew I didn't really have a choice. I lowered the pen to the soft white paper and signed my name: Elena Vance. Matteo slid the document back toward himself. He looked at my signature for a brief second before pulling a thick gold ring with a single crimson ruby from his jacket pocket. He set it on the desk between us. "Put it on," he instructed. "My mother's ring. You wear it everywhere from this moment on." I picked up the ring. It was heavy and surprisingly warm. I slid it onto my left ring finger. It fit perfectly, as if it had been made for me. Knock. Knock. The heavy office door creaked open, and Marco stepped inside, his expression dark. "Boss. We have a problem." Matteo’s relaxed posture instantly hardened. "Speak." "Luca Volkov’s scout team just breached the perimeter gates," Marco said, pulling a black handgun from his jacket. "They tracked the blood trial from the hospital. They’re approaching the main driveway now." My heart dropped into my stomach. "What?" Matteo didn't panic. Even with a fresh bullet wound on his side, he pushed himself up from his chair. A sharp wince crossed his face, but he forced his body into standing upright, radiating pure, terrifying authority. "How many?" Matteo asked calmly. "Eight men. Two vehicles," Marco replied. "Our men are holding the main hall, but they came heavy." Suddenly, the deafening CRACK of gunfire echoed from downstairs. The glass lamps on Matteo’s desk rattled from the impact. I gasped, staggering backward, my back hitting the cold wood of the bookshelf. "Get behind the desk, Elena!" Matteo ordered, reaching inside his desk drawer and pulling out a matte-black pistol. "Matteo, you can't fight! Your stitches will tear!" I yelled over the sudden barrage of automatic weapon fire exploding through the mansion. "Then you'd better be ready to stitch me up again, little bird," Matteo said, a cold, flat grin appearing on his face. Before he could reach the office door, the heavy oak panels burst inward with a sickening splintering sound. Dust and wood chips rained through the air. A tall man in a dark tactical vest stepped into the doorway, raising an automatic rifle directly toward Matteo’s chest. On his exposed right neck was the dark silver tattoo of a dragon—the same mark I had seen on the attacker at the hospital. "Moretti!" the gunman roared. Time seemed to slow down. Matteo raised his pistol, but his body faltered for a microsecond—his freshly operated side, giving out under the strain. The gunman pressed the trigger. Instinct took over before my brain could process what I was doing. I didn't think about the contract, my brother, or my own safety. I just saw a patient about to die. I grabbed a heavy bronze bust of a lion off the shelf beside me and hurled it with all my strength straight at the gunman's head. The bronze weight caught the man squarely on the side of his jaw. His shot went wild, ripping a line of bullet holes straight through the ceiling plaster instead of Matteo's chest. "What the—" the gunman stumbled backward, disoriented and bleeding. In that single second of distraction, Matteo fired twice. Two deafening POP-POP sounds filled the room. The gunman collapsed onto the carpet, motionless. Silence fell over the room, heavy and thick with gunsmoke. Downstairs, the sound of shouting and footsteps faded as Marco’s men cleared the remaining attackers. Matteo stood over the fallen gunman, breathing heavily. He slowly lowered his gun, then turned his head to look at me. I was leaning against the wall, my hands shaking violently, staring at the heavy bronze lion resting on the carpet. Matteo walked over to me, stepping over the debris. He stopped just inches away, his towering frame blocking out the smoke and chaos behind him. He reached up with a warm, steady hand, gently cupping my chin to force me to look at him. "You threw a statue at a gunman," he murmured, his ice-gray eyes wide with a strange mix of shock and intense admiration. "He... he was going to shoot you," I whispered, my voice trembling. "And you owe my brother sixty thousand dollars." A deep, genuine laugh rumbled from Matteo’s chest—the first real laugh I had heard from him. "You really are something else, Elena Moretti," he whispered, his thumb lightly stroking my cheek. Suddenly, a red laser dot appeared on the wall directly behind my head. Matteo’s eyes widened. "Get down!" He grabbed me by the waist and threw his body over mine just as another gunshot shattered the window frame behind us.
