Chapter Eighteen

Oliver shook her head, “there is no way you're allowing your rival to take your boyfriend from you.” “Don't forget it's not real,” I corrected like it wasn't annoying to know that Suzy was probably with him at the moment. “Still,” Katie rolled her eyes, “you're not planning on letting her take him, are you?” I shrugged, “I don't want to let her feel like she's better than me because she's with him, but well, I guess there's nothing I can do.” “Why didn't he ask her to be his girlfriend instead?” Layla asked. “I don't know,” I admitted, wondering why he actually decided to ask me instead of her. They seemed really close. It would be even more understandable if they were to end up dating. “All I care about at the moment is that some chick is there with my sister's boyfriend,” Oliver huffed like she was the one whose boyfriend was with another female. It annoyed me also, but I didn't want to dwell on that. Especially since questions on why I was so annoyed came popping up in my head. As much as I tried to convince myself that I was mainly annoyed because he was with Suzy, I also had a feeling that wasn't the only reason. Which was why I just chose to not care. “Hey ladies,” Kelvin appeared at the table we were on. “Oh my, you came,” Katie rose to her feet, his hand flying round her waist like a natural thing. “Yeah, surprise.” He'd said he wasn't going to attend since his family were having their own Thanksgiving dinner. I guess he just wanted to surprise her. She wrapped her hands around his neck, standing on her tiptoes to plant a peck on his lips. Kelvin August is a six foot tall banker. He was undeniably handsome with his smooth chocolate skin, black curly hair, broad shoulders and chest, with obviously six packs. The two had been together for three years already, and there was no doubting the fact he was going to pop up the marriage question anytime soon. I might not believe in love, but I did like their relationship. “Hey,” he greeted me once they'd pulled apart (though his hand didn't leave her waist). “You're late,” I stated jokingly, watching his smile grow wider. “I had to escape my family's Thanksgiving to be here, but I humbly apologize,” “All's forgiven,” I played along in the game of annoyance, “there must not be a repetition.” “Hi Kelvin,” Oliver greeted, causing his direction to snap to her. “Hey Oliver, didn't see you there.” “Yeah, you were too busy kissing,” she gave Katie a teasing smile which she replied with an eye roll. “Hi, I guess I'll introduce myself,” Layla said, “I'm Layla, and I'm certain you're the Kelvin August Katie won't stop talking about.” “That's me,” he stared down at Katie with a wink, “I hope you ladies don't mind me taking her with me.” “Whatever, it's not like she was of any use here,” I joked, as Oliver and Layla chuckled, while she just shook her head. “Come on, let's leave these weirdos,” she said, holding his arm as they both left. “Well, now that she's gone, what're we going to talk about?” Layla asked. “I don't know about you two,” Oliver rose to her feet, “but I'm going to search for any hot guys.” I rolled my eyes, “you're seriously going to do that? Didn't you just break up with Gorgy?” She shrugged, grabbing her purse from the table, “my sister's literally not going to be single during the holiday, I can't imagine being the single one.” “Cha Cha,” she wiggled her fingers, walking away. “So now, what're we going to do?” Layla asked again. I picked up my purse, “if Austin is with his date and so are Katie and Oliver, then I guess I'm going to go on a walk.” She rolled her eyes, “which leaves me here alone,” “You can also check for hot guys, I mean there're like billions of handsome single guys here,” She stared around till her gaze landed on a particular guy who looked around her age, “I guess you're right.” A smile appeared on my lips, “enjoy.” Her gaze didn't leave him, “I'm sure I will.” Since I was sure everyone would be happy, I decided to go on a walk around the huge party. Even with the lots of people walking around, there was still space for more people to pass and waiters could also serve. I hadn't eaten, which reminded me of the fact I a little hungry but then wasn't sure if I wanted to eat alone. Against my own will, my eyes searched for Austin who would probably be with Suzy. Stupid dude. Layla's question came running back to my thoughts. Why didn't he just choose Suzy? They could be dating. I mean, it's not like anyone would've opposed it. Either way, he chose me. My heart warmed at that thought. He chose me. Oh shoot, get a grip of yourself girl. You shouldn't care about why he chose you except that you're going to have someone who'd help you with your sport. “Hello,” a child who was standing beside the pool called, “would you help me tie my hair?” Her hair was packed in two ponytails but one side had fallen out of how whoever packed it did. I headed to crouch in front of her, “hey sweetheart, where're your parents?” Why would anyone leave their child in such a crowded place? The girl looked about the age of five or six so it was only stupid that her parents would leave her alone. She pointed to a direction so I turned to see a woman chatting with another woman. So irresponsible. Like she knew someone was throwing at her an intense gaze, she turned to our direction. “Darcy! Come here!” She stared at me cautiously. Apparently, it seemed like she thought I was a threat to Darcy, who skipped to go meet her. I rose to my feet, a little annoyed that the mom would leave her child to just go anywhere like that. Especially by a pool. I turned to the extremely huge pool which was obviously going to cost a fortune. Especially with how neat it was. Whoever cleaned it did a good job because there was not a speck of dust to be found. If it wasn't so cold and I co— Before I had a chance to complete my thinking, a figure hit me with so much force, I was swept off my feet, flying into the water. What the heck? My heart raced faster once the cold waters made contact with my skin, but that was the least of my concerns. I couldn't swim!!! The shock gripped me so I thrashed my arms and legs widely trying to grab hold of anything, but that was to no avail. I mean I was in a freaking pool!!! Where do I want to find a f*****g thing to hold?!! I ensured to hold my breath, trying to push myself to the surface, but it felt more like I was sinking deeper. My eyes burned in the water so I had to keep them close, and even though I wanted to cry, I wasn't able to. My heart was beating faster than ever as it was certain this might be it. I couldn't hold my breath any longer, and just when my body was about to give in to the force of the water, I felt a hand wrap around my waist from behind. At that moment, I needed to grab hold of anything, but I wasn't even sure who it was holding me and pulling me up to the surface. Finally, my head was on the surface and the breath flowed into my lungs, followed by tears. There were tons of people around, staring at me with fear in their eyes. But when I turned to my savior, I saw the most fear in Austin's eyes. Which led to more tears leaving me. “Austin,” he'd saved me.
