Chapter Twelve

1238 Words
♠ Kim Stans ♠ “Did you know your annoying brother is a friend to Suzy?” I took a seat on the armrest of the couch dad sat on, watching a football match. “What?! He is?” Katie said through the video call, the surprise I'd felt was evident in her tone. “She arrived at his house yesterday after the lesson,” I scoffed, “it was very annoying that your frustrating brother made me meet her.” “And what did she say?” I explained in detail all that'd happened after Suzy arrived, and me telling her that he was my boyfriend. She burst into laughter when I told her he just handed me his car keys then didn't even say a goodbye or anything to let her believe I was truly his girlfriend. “That guy would never change,” she said in between laughters, “I'm surprised he didn't even ask what the f**k you were talking about.” “That'd have been totally embarrassing,” I couldn't even imagine being embarrassed in front of Suzy. That was equivalent to one's clothes falling off when they wore nothing underneath, while performing on a live concert in the presence of a hundred thousand people. Who knows, it might even be more embarrassing. That was how much hatred we possessed for each other. “How was your date with Kelvin?” I asked the question she'd obviously been waiting for me to ask. “Oh it was perfect,” she started giving me everything about her date in detail. After about fifteen minutes, we said our goodbyes, then hung up. “When would Oliver arrive?” Dad asked, sounding like he'd been waiting for me to be done calling so he could ask that. I checked the time on the wall clock which read eleven fifty two in the morning, “she should be here any moment.” Like she had planned it all, the sound of doorbell filled the house, causing us both to jump to our feet. “Is she here?” He asked, obviously extremely excited (like I was) to meet her after so long. At the age of sixty one, he was already getting older with all the stress of his younger age telling on him. He was just five foot six, which explained why I was so short, and had the cute chubby look dads in cartoons had. His head which had once had long brown hair on it was now bald from aging, only giving him an even cuter look. I headed towards the door, opening it to reveal Oliver Stans. Although she was three years younger than I was, one could assume we were twins. We both possessed straight black hair (which had been inherited from our mom), brown eyes and deep set eyes. We were also of similar height, though she'd always argue that she was an inch taller. I noticed she wasn't alone, not surprised to see her childhood bestie, Layla Marine, who was just a year older than she was. “Layla?” A smile appeared on my lips as I threw them both into a sisterly hug, earning a giggle from them. Layla was a red haired beauty who was of similar height with Oliver. The three of us were close when we were younger till she left to Louisiana six years ago to live with her aunt when her parents died, then we lost contact. But then when Oliver had gone, they'd met each other again and obviously got back to being friends. “I'm sorry for coming unannounced,” she apologized, a smile planted on her lips, “Oliver here said it'd be a smart idea to surprise you.” I smiled, making way for them to come in which they did, “it's alright. The journey must've been stressful and you must be tired.” “Sweetheart,” dad threw her in his arms, while she erupted in yet another giggle, “I've missed you so much. How are you dear?” “I'm good,” she said once he'd released her from the hug, “I missed you so much also. “Hey Max,” Layla greeted, smiling at him, “you get more handsome every day that passes by, that is certain.” He threw his head back, letting out a manly laughter, “you and your flattering, I thought you'd have stopped them.” She chuckled while I closed the door to go meet them. “You two should go take your shower then you can come eat.” They nodded, “can you help get our bags from the car?” Oliver asked, winking at me, “I would've done it, but I'm really tired.” I rolled my eyes at her exaggeration, “just go take your shower.” *** “I'm so excited that we're all eating together on the same table,” dad's grin was from ear to ear and was contagious enough to make me smile. “Same here.” Oliver took a spoonful of rice, “thanks for letting us stay in your place Kim.” “Where else would I let you head to?” I took a spoon of rice, then asked, “why did your boss allow you to come back home?” She stopped eating, turning to Layla so I watched them make eye communication before she turned back to me. “I quit,” she explained in a soft and low tone. “You did?” My surprise was understandable because ever since she was younger, she'd always dreamed of being a chef. It was something she was determined to achieve, which became a success two years ago. She was the happiest at the time, and I thought she'd still be equally blissed out on the thoughts of being a chef. But then she quit? “I just— I don't think the job's for me,” she stared down at the food she was no longer eating. Understanding what was going on, I reached for her hand across the table, “you should do what feels right to you. I'll always be there to support you.” She smiled her gratitude, “thanks,” “How ‘bout you?” Dad asked Layla who just shrugged. “Similar situation.” I released her hand, watching her continue with her food, “how's it going with Gorgy?” She rolled her eyes, “we broke up last week because I said I was going to live with my sister.” Well, I could understand his point. Not all guys like long distance relationships, but I could sense she wanted me to blame him so I shook my head in disgust. “What a guy, and he would say he loves you, but can't live a long distance relationship.” “I know right?” She huffed. “I'm just happy you're here, so let's be happy at this time and not think about any senseless guys,” dad said which we both agreed to. “How's your writing going?” Layla asked, taking a sip of the glass of water in front of her. “Same old,” I wasn't sure if I wanted to tell anyone yet that I was dating Austin all because of what could be the best book of my life.
