Scamp began dropping weight at the age of nine; we were told the bad news that he had kidney disease. As a result he was very dehydrated, and we were instructed to give him subcutaneous fluids twice a day. Glen and I were hopeless at doing this, even after the vet had shown us several times. I felt sorry for the poor dog; he patiently endured our bungling efforts to slide the needle under his skin and get the drip to flow properly. Unfortunately, this occurred just when we needed to fly down to Florida to see my mother-in-law. We couldn’t reasonably ask a dog-sitter to stick needles into him, so I booked Scamp onto the flight and bought a regulation-size dog carrier for him.
