As hoped, the two puppies played together all day long, inside the house and out. Lucy made sure not to tread on either by mistake, and I have a sweet rearview photo of the huge Dane and diminutive Jack Russell puppy sitting side by side on the lawn. Glen and I were avid horse riders, and some of our competitions were away from home. We didn’t like to leave the two youngsters, so they accompanied us to overnight shows. Our son and my mother-in-law came, too, making it a family occasion. One weekend we took Scamp and Ruggles with us to Leesburg, Virginia. We had a long drive, put the horses away in their stalls for the night, and ate dinner in town. After a final walk, the two puppies lay exhausted on the duvet when we retired to bed.
