Chapter 2

1258 Words
Adrian’s POV The door slams open as I rush inside. For a second, I can’t breathe. My father is on the floor, his chest soaked in blood. The metallic scent fills the room, sharp and suffocating. And right beside him—Maya. She’s standing there, frozen, clutching a knife. My father’s blood is all over her hands. “What did you do?” The words rip out of me before I can stop them. My voice echoes against the walls, trembling with rage. Her eyes go wide, terrified. “This isn’t true!” she shouts. “I didn’t kill him! I swear! I just came in here and found him like this!” I want to believe her. I need to believe her. But the sight before me makes it impossible. Then Stella steps forward beside me, her voice tight. “Adrian, she’s lying! She told me she was planning to kill him!” My chest tightens. “What?” “I heard her say it yesterday,” Stella says louder, her voice shaking with fury. “She said she wanted Alpha Marcus dead. That he was the reason you’d never love her.” The air leaves my lungs. I turn to Maya, searching her face for denial, for something real—but all I see is panic and guilt. “No!” she screams. “That’s not true! Stella, why are you saying this?” She looks between us, eyes wild, desperate. But Stella is holding onto my arm now, trembling, tears glistening in her lashes. “I should’ve said something sooner,” she whispers. “I didn’t think she’d actually do it.” I can’t think. I can’t breathe. My father—the man who raised me, who demanded strength, who was supposed to live forever—is lying dead because of her. I stare at Maya, at the woman who was supposed to be my mate. My Luna. “Adrian, please,” she begs, her voice breaking. “Please believe me. I would never hurt your father. He was kind to me. Why would I kill him?” Her words sound hollow, far away. My vision blurs, rage mixing with grief until I can barely tell them apart. “You’re lying,” I say quietly. “You’ve been lying this whole time.” “No, I swear on the Moon Goddess—” “Don’t you dare!” I shout, the fury bursting out of me. “Don’t you dare swear on her name!” She turns to Stella again, pleading. “Stella, please. Tell him the truth. You know I couldn’t do this.” But Stella only steps closer to me, her hand resting on my arm. “I’m sorry, Maya,” she says softly. “I didn’t think you’d actually go through with it.” I feel sick. Everything inside me twists and burns. The woman I married stands there covered in my father’s blood, begging me to believe her, and I can’t tell what’s true anymore. Then she clutches her stomach and gasps, “I need to sit down. Something’s wrong.” But all I can see is my father’s body. All I can hear is his voice echoing in my head — never trust too easily, son. “For the entire time we’ve been married,” I say slowly, “I trusted you. I thought maybe, deep down, you were good. But you did this. You killed him.” “I didn’t!” she cries, tears streaming down her face. “Please, Adrian, you have to believe me!” “You will pay for what you did,” I whisper, my voice cold as steel. Three warriors rush into the room. “Take her to the servant quarters,” I order. “From this moment on, I, Alpha Adrian Blackwood, demote Maya Chen to the rank of servant. She is no longer Luna of this pack.” She goes pale, shaking her head. “No, please—” The warriors grab her arms. She cries out, clutching her stomach again. “Wait,” she gasps. “Something’s wrong. The baby—” I clench my jaw. “Enough.” Then she screams, “Adrian, I’m in labour,it's about to fall the baby!” Everything inside me freezes. The words hit me harder than any blow. My breath catches as I stare at her. For a moment, I almost step forward. But Stella’s voice is suddenly at my ear, soft and poisonous. “She’s lying, Adrian. She’ll say anything to save herself.” And just like that, my heart hardens again. “Take her away,” I order. The warriors drag her toward the door. Her cries fill the hall, but I force myself not to listen. Then— “It’s the baby!” she screams. “Something’s wrong with the baby! Please, I need help!” Her pain sounds real. Too real. I step forward, my anger flickering into panic. “What’s wrong?” She’s pale, drenched in sweat. “I think I’m going into labor,” she gasps. “Please. Help me.” For a second, nobody moves. Then I shout, “Why are you standing there? Take her to the hospital! Now!” They rush her out. I stand frozen in that room, staring at my father’s still body. The silence presses down like a weight I can’t escape. Hours pass before I find myself in the hospital corridor. The doctor comes out, her face drawn. “She delivered twin boys,” she says quietly. Twin boys. My sons. But she doesn’t say more. She just walks away, leaving me standing there, hollow. I don’t go in to see her. I can’t. When Stella comes out later, her face is calm, unreadable. “One of the babies didn’t make it,” she says softly. “The other one is fine. I’ve already arranged for him to be taken somewhere safe.” I nod, numb. I don’t even ask where. Because deep down, I don’t know what’s real anymore—only that everything I loved is gone. __________________ Maya Pov My head snaps toward Stella so fast my neck hurts. The one person I trusted my whole life just told me my baby is dead. And she's standing there like she's talking about the weather. Blood rushes to my ears. My heart pounds so hard I think everyone in the hospital can hear it. With shaking hands, I try to stand up from the bed. "What are you talking about?" My voice comes out weak and scared. "You have to calm down," Stella says coldly. "You just gave birth. Drink more water and eat something." "Where is Adrian?" I demand. "I need to talk to him right now. Bring him here!" Stella throws her head back and laughs. It's a cruel sound that makes my skin crawl. "Do you really think Adrian wants to see you after what you did to his father? You're so selfish to even think about it." "You're lying!" I shout, even though it hurts my throat. "You know I didn't kill him! Why did you tell Adrian I was planning to murder Alpha Marcus? Why would you lie like that?" "Don't act stupid, Maya." Stella moves away from the window and comes closer to my bed. "You were in that room. You were holding the knife. The blood was all over you. Did you think Adrian would just ignore all that because you're his wife? Oh honey, no. He doesn't care about you at all."
