Chapter 10

997 Words
James drove home earlier as he tried to wrap his head around the events of the day…something didn't add up When he approached Ava abroad to tell her exactly what went wrong in her marriage, he had a plan. Initially he felt it was better to stick with Lily, she seemed like she had everything under control, and he had no other choice but to betray his boss and set him up with a random stranger, but over the years he has noticed their love vanish into thin air, she no longer had him at her fingertips, in fact she seemed like she didn't have him at all. Although they were the perfect couple to the media, the outside world strived to be like them, and he often heard compliments and words of jealousy from her friends as she gave them a mocking smile and gaze….their husbands might buy expensive stuff for them, but her husband shows her off to the world, he gives her his card for her personal pleasure without batting a lash, he holds her hands in public as the whisper sweet nothings into each other ear. They completely covered the rumors of him ever being married to her sister by being so sweet in public, no of them officially addressed the news, but their longing gazes and public displays of affection said it all. At some point even he bought it, if he didn't know the couple personally, he would have sworn that the phrase a match made in heaven was made to describe them. But it was not like that in private, the longing gazes, the affection, everything was a facade, a big lie to distract the public. He had hoped that they would fix their marriage, that all marriages go through it, but it got worse, they don't even talk, if the ship goes down….he doesn't plan to go down with it. But Ava Winters had changed….she didn't have that soft naive look in her eyes, they were hardened and cold….and thirsty, she wanted revenge, and she looked like she knew exactly how to get it, she had the resolve, and he had the information, he could be very useful, he knew that….it was time to switch boats. Still….he knew how much Ava adored her ex husband, he had some doubts that she would go ahead and render him utterly useless ... ... ..but anger is a strong emotion, it makes you do things you naturally wouldn't do. His house was dark and a little cold indicating his heater has been turned off, suddenly his heart had a little skip, immediately switching on the lights, his house was perfectly clean, but something didn't feel right, walking towards the sitting room he turned to the mirror and came face to face with a knife stuck in his glass, little tape recording taped to the glass. Walking to it, he played the recording, it was silent at first, then a few noises were heard, then a scream which made his heart sink….he knew that voice very well, as well as he knew the back of his palm, a few inaudible voices were heard after that, then it became silent again…that was all, less than 30 seconds recording, yet it held a deep meaning and he knew what this meant, it was a warning, one he shouldn't take lightly. Sitting down in the dark office, he spun around in his work chair, he should feel bad, for not remembering his anniversary and for dismissing his wife for reminding him of it, but he didn't, he didn't feel anything, he was numb, which scared him, he was not meant to feel this way towards Lily, but he couldn't bring himself to like her, talk more of love her the same way, he thought it wasn't possible, but he felt nothing for her, not love, not hate, not pain nor anger…. nothing. His body had heated up the past few minutes and as time went by he got more uncomfortable, he felt his throat tighten and he saw himself gasping for air, his eyes were bloodshot as his vision turned blurry He was poisoned Pressing the emergency button in his office with force, he tried to keep himself from falling unconscious, but with every passing second, he felt himself slip into unconsciousness, constantly hitting the button, he became numb as he slowly closed his eyes. “Hello” Ava Winters phone rang in the middle of the night as she drowsily picked up the call “Mrs Winters… this is Brown” She hired a private investigator to spy on Damon, he was smart and a tough opposite, she has to do everything to be at least one step before him “Speak” She cleared her voice as she clutched unknowingly to her blanket “Sir Damon was poisoned and rushed to the ICU.. it isn't looking good” She sped up to the hospital as she could barely hear her own thoughts, all sen saw was the road and the image of Damon gasping for his last breath, and with every thought, her heart hurt…she wasn't meant to feel this way, this was what she wanted from the start, to make him suffer like she did, yet the thought of him dying made her extremely weak. Reaching the hospital gates, she parked her car and sat there slowly gathering her thoughts. She was not his wife and the only connection she had to him was her children, she wasn't meant to be affected, clutching her steering wheel and got out of the car. Damon was out of the ICU but he was very much unconscious, he felt like he had just escaped from a burning house, and his body felt like a rock was on it. Looking around all he saw were machines, and all he heard were beeping, his vision was still blurry but he caught something at the side of his eyes.
